PRINCIPALS MESSAGE N. H. MCCOLLOM Sup't of Lassen Union High School and Junior College Success is the Eldorado which every individual hopes to acquire. For some, hope is the extent of effort expended toward its acquisition. The fellow who believes the world owes him a living expects his success delivered, postpaid, wrapped in cellophane and ribbon and brought by special messenger. The cer- tainty of his disappointment does not lessen the embarrassment, pain, sorrow, cynicism and reorganization necessitated by his failure. A Wishbone is a poor substitute for a brain and backbone. For others, the realization that success is the reward of constant application and effort, serves as a challenge, prompting the best of which one is capable. Success is not a definite quality. It is measured not in amount or importance, but in degree. One who achieves the greatest accomplishment of which he is capable has attained success. It is the fulfillment of one's ambitions in the service of humanity, to the best of one's ability, which determines success. The margin between success and failure is extremely narrow. Too frequently a man may relinquish the field, give up the fight, or sit down and fold his hands when a little more effort, a little more patience or tact or persistence would have brought success. Persistent effort and patient endeavor will often convert what seems hopeless failure to glorious success. There is no real failure except in giving up, no defeat except from within, representing one-'s own inherent weak- ness of purpose. Genius has been defined as the will to make continuous effort. Success is assured the one who refuses to give up. By determination of purpose, success is universally possible. 44 Q xv
