FCDREWORD Boulders and slides, toaether with storms, many times block proa- ress alonq our highways. We have met and will meet many olosta- cles on the roads of lite. Education has aided and will continue to aid us to overcome such hindrances. As Nature leaves her mark on both the sands oi the desert and the ruaaed mountains, so We Wish to leave our mark firmly in- dented in the history ot Lassen Union Hiah. Herein We Wish to por- tray hy Word and picture the deeds about which we will wish to dream in tuture years. S usanville California Q89 PRINCIPALS MESSAGE N. H. MCCOLLOM Sup't of Lassen Union High School and Junior College Success is the Eldorado which every individual hopes to acquire. For some, hope is the extent of effort expended toward its acquisition. The fellow who believes the world owes him a living expects his success delivered, postpaid, wrapped in cellophane and ribbon and brought by special messenger. The cer- tainty of his disappointment does not lessen the embarrassment, pain, sorrow, cynicism and reorganization necessitated by his failure. A Wishbone is a poor substitute for a brain and backbone. For others, the realization that success is the reward of constant application and effort, serves as a challenge, prompting the best of which one is capable. Success is not a definite quality. It is measured not in amount or importance, but in degree. One who achieves the greatest accomplishment of which he is capable has attained success. It is the fulfillment of one's ambitions in the service of humanity, to the best of one's ability, which determines success. The margin between success and failure is extremely narrow. Too frequently a man may relinquish the field, give up the fight, or sit down and fold his hands when a little more effort, a little more patience or tact or persistence would have brought success. Persistent effort and patient endeavor will often convert what seems hopeless failure to glorious success. There is no real failure except in giving up, no defeat except from within, representing one-'s own inherent weak- ness of purpose. Genius has been defined as the will to make continuous effort. Success is assured the one who refuses to give up. By determination of purpose, success is universally possible. 44 Q xv elljw R. M. FULTON Science, Ma'rh. LUTITIA O'KELLY English, Counselling N. H. In our freshman year we won the tie-up and were the guests of the other classes at the Freshman reception. The sophomore year was a very successful one. We were victors in the tie- up and followed that by winning the ten dollar prize for selling student body cards. The Sophomore Hop was given as a social event and the girls were very active in basketball. In the junior year our play, He Was a Gay Sef1orita , was one of the high- lights of the year. On March 22 we sponsored a program in assembly and a dance in the gymnasium. The Iunior Prom was an outstanding social event of the school year. The senior year was a busy one. Betty Barry ranked highest in Scholarship while Dorothy Lanigar and Iay Gibson won the Legion Citizenship awards. The Senior play, Growing Pains , given in the gymnasium, attracted one of the largest crowds in history. We sponsored a concession at the I. C. Carnival and gave one program in assembly. The Senior Ball with Dutch decorations of windmills, landscape and a wooden shoe was enjoyed by all. Ditch Day and the Senior Banquet were also events to be remembered. The class wishes to take this opportunity to thank the members of the faculty for their help during the last four years in high school and express their earnest appreciation to Mrs. O'Kelly and Mr. Collyer, their class advisers. The senior gift of a fine stage curtain remains in the school to show the school spirit pos- sessed by the class and their sincere appreciation of what the school has meant to them. e149 SCHOOL CALENDAR Aug. 3l-Frosh and all enter school for first day. Along with the ability to display teamwork must come a certain amount of individuality which cannot be overplayed. The A team presented a championship to the local high school this past season, defeating their worthy adversaries, Westwood and Alturas. Although the team lost four out of five games played with Nevada teams, they remained above all California teams they met. Basketball sweaters were purchased by lettermen this year. The players met two professional teams, and also several town teams. They defeated the Bed Heads and were caught on the short end of the score when they came up against the Globe Trotters. There were twenty boys who made their boxing letters, two who earned a wrest- ling letter and ten boys were awarded letters for tumbling. TENNIS Tennis was delayed this spring because the weather did not permit earlier practicing. Tournaments were scheduled with Alturas, Reno, Westwood, Fall River, and Adin. The winner of the sub-league tournament that was held at Susanville on May l4, was sent to the Northern California finals. The first tournament with Westwood resulted in a tie. SWIMMING Swimming as an extra-curricular activity was introduced to the students for the first time this year. There were not very many participants in this newly accepted sport, but more have shown a desire to enter. There were only two meets, both being with Reno. As a result of these meets seven cups were won by our relay team, and Leroy Kayser, free style paddler. In May of 1938 a meet was scheduled with Sacramento. Swimmers were also sent to Grant Union to enter G. I. E. competition. Mr. Hebbe of Roosevelt Pool assisted in coaching the team. BASEBALL The nine representing Lassen did not get under way until late in the year. This was due to the late track season and the unfavorable weather. Games were played with Westwood and other nearby schools. 44519 ,iff C0 1, if zu., JA , . is ff 4 ji , . 1, , . , Eiga 1 A 515,-15, we , ,V ,, gag 4 2 Q ff? W al 4 L. U. I-I. S. The Girls' Athletic Association is an organization in the Lassen Union High School which welcomes girls who enjoy and want to excel in sports. The girls were fortunate in having two new sports added to their list, archery and swimming. The tirst activities in these sports were a swimming party held at the Roosevelt Swimming Pool, and an archery tournament, which was won by the luniors. The regular sports season began with speedball. Class games were played, with the senior class victorious. lnter-class games in badminton and ping-pong were played, with about ninety members participating. During the winter, basketball tournaments were played, with the seniors again the Victors. On October 23, a play day was held in Greenville, which many ot the girls attended. The annual G. A. A. banquet was held at the Grand Cate on March l6. The All-Star team was announced at this banquet. The Freshman girls have shown a better record in sports than any other Freshman class in previous years. There are one hundred girls in the G. A. A. this year and many have received letters and awards for their participation and sportsmanship. He hummed and whistled merrily as he untied his shoes, but he would not have been so cheerful had he but seen that a dark form lay in a secluded corner where the rays from the light could not penetrate. It was a low huddled figure which looked as if it were crouched and ready for a leap! But Iohn Samuel Iames Iones did not see all this and unsuspectingly he switched off the light! A ray of light streamed through the open window and by that ray of light there could be seen a shadow slowly moving towards the bed in which lay Iohn Samuel Iames Iones! Suddenly, a scream pierced the night! Quickly followed by a low, raspy, gurgling sound! Then, all was silent again. -Felix Erro. 4458: Tl-IE SCHOOL TERM I The first day comes, We've started back, Back to the old, old grind again. Il IV To some it's fun, to some it's not, Now Spring is here The Autumn sun brings a longing thought And of the yearning thoughts Of fishing in a shady nook, or nutting in a sheltered dell, That turn to sailing kites, instead of new sums in Algebra Where Autumn leaves come tumbling down. And giggling girls are dreaming of lll Their newest date or movie hero. But winter comes V And then, how hard it is When Iune arrives To keep from dancing, flitting 'round We're out again, free from work, As snowflakes lightly hit the ground. The object of our dreams has come. This season, one of Christmas cheer, Too bad, too bad that school is out, Makes books and tests too much to bear. There's nothing new to do or say. A BEAUTIFUL SPOT 'Twas a beautiful spot upon the hill Where beautiful trees grew at God's own will, Where animals of each size and shape Had made their homes-until of late. They loved to run beneath these trees And each day frolic in the breeze. But there came a day when this wonderful spot Was black with smoke, and the air grew hot. The trees were burning to the ground Homeless animals found new stomping grounds, Where they could run again beneath the trees And each day frolic in the breeze. That beautiful spot upon the hill ls now charred and black-a terrible sight! Where beautiful trees grew at God's own will 'Twill take years and years to set it right! Those stately trees could still be there If some careless person had just played fair And put those campfire coals out Instead of leaving them in doubt. -Ada Burr.
