It's a bright and beautiful day, and wc've been looking forward to this for a long time. At last around the bend in the river come the red canoes. We shade our eyes against the shine of sun on water, get our cameras ready and at the exact moment snap a picture of the lead canoe--its captain, our Miss Mac. This snapshot doesn't have to be developed, for we will always remember the way Miss Mac looked on River Day and through all the long spring days before that when she coached us at Crew. We'll remember too, her consistent humor and sportsmanship. Those of us who are able to meet Miss Mac only in her ollicial capacities as Assistant to thc Dean or llcad of the Physical Education Department, will find she displays in business those same qualities that endeared her to those she coached. Although she is often to be found in the Gym Ollicc, on the hockey field, driving the station wagon or smiling from behind her desk in the Main Oflicc, her real home on Campus is at Mrs. l.indquist's. There she spends her limited free time brewing excellent coffee which she refuses to drink, and talking up a passion against bridge. Canasta, she claims, is a bit more to her liking. It doesnit take brains to play it! All of us who know her canit help but smile at this, for we are aware of the job she has juggling schedules, rooms and prospective students. She loves sleep but never gets enough, probably because she spends so much time doing things for other people. 1 She has a tremendous sense of humor, is always cheerful aml entertaining. Whenever we see the tall blond figure striding across Campus, hands in pockets, we're sure of a quick wave of the hand and a greeting by name. . Miss Macis wonderful smile and warm blue eyes welcomed us even before wc were students, and at Com mcneement she is the last to say good-bye. Throughout the year we come to her with our problems, confident that, whatever their nature, they will receive her full consideration. We know too, that she is an expert judge of character, and it behooves us to be as sincere in our dealings with her as she is with us. In years to come, when we think back to our time here, we will immediately think of Miss Mac, remembering all that she has done for us and for the college. Lasell is Miss Mac and Miss Mac is Lasell. 4. Miss Muriel M cClelland 5 NX '!.q I H ' Presenting Her Right Honorable Mayorship, Miss Sally Hughes--WAbove- average American Girl, among the first to greet new residents, elected by the citizens for her consistently outstanding contributions to community life. 6 Winslow Municipal Building, the town's newest completed building-a spot to which citizens point with pride. Located on Maple Street, overlooking the Com- munity Athletic l icld, Winslow occupies a central position, geographically and socially. The building and landscaping are especially beautiful in spring and fall, when the flame bushes, tulips and forsythia contrast with the dark pine and ivy. llere nearly all important activities are held. Here the Vesper services are heard on cold January nights, when the Seniors plod through the snow, carefully holding up their gowns. Here, the Community Sings, with everyone trying to out- shout everyone else. Town meetings, orientation programs for the new citizens, bridge parties, fashion shows, dance symposiums, indoor sports-all are carried on under this roof. Walls are slid back, seats are put up, taken down, tables are arranged and a hundred activities can take place. Sometimes movies are shown, merchandising lilms, and abstract art films, pictures of the Olympics, travel movies to entice the citizens to see more of their country. The Ladies Aid moves in with hot dogs and bootees, colfee and copper candlesticks for the Bazaar. Miss Wethern and the Community Workshop Players rehearse, paint flats, and produce an evening's entertainment. We hang panels, strew leaves, dim the lights aml dreamily change the atmosphere for Proms, with the men in black tie and the gals in tulle and organdy, drifting out to dance on the terrace or sit under the old pine. Long after they have left, the citizens will remember Winslow as an integral part of Lasell. As in every community there is a certain inevitable period of adjustment. One might almost call it initiation . However, this only serves to provide amusement for some of the older and more sedate citizenry, and bring to the fore the good sportsmanship of the younger. 5 'fd :,CL- 1 I New residents and old start each year with a trip to the General Store and Post Ofiiee to buy such supplies for their work as typing paper, notebook pa- per---fgwe only have the two-ring variety, '4Lasell stationery, desk blotters and ink. Proeuring these necessitates a bit of stand- ing in line, and in this line friendships between mem- bers of the community are often begun. This is Raymond YVuss, one of our most charming und genial leading citizens. Mr. NVuss is well known for his desire for growth und progress, his genuine in tcrcst in his neighbors, his informal talks at town meetings and cultural gatherings, his warm smile, and the air of distinction his presence lends our community. The Quill, a sister publica- tion, appears three times a year and contains lil- erary contributions such as poems, short stories, and essays written by our budding Heming- ways. In addition lo these smaller publications, we have also an all- inclusive production, the Lamp. This is the book, published once yearly which records for each of us the story of our stay here. In it there are portraits of our fellow citizens, informal shots highlight- ing big and small activities, pic- tures of the community, art work, and some commentary. All of which, we hope, will serve to re- mind us of the fun and friends we'vc had at Lasell. ilv'-3: .
