Wartella, G. Ziegler. BACK The 1953 Lasalle Varsity Football Team had a very successful season considering the stiff opposition played, including three Class 'B' schools. The Saints commenced their 1953 schedule by whipping St. Francis of Petosky 59-0. Arnie Frazier led the scoring parade with three touchdowns. Also scoring were Joe Frazier with two, Lehto, LaRocque, Olmstead, and Massey with one. The second game was played under the lights at Cheboygan against Catholic Central and the Saints won handily Z5-0. The win cost St. Ignace its sparkplug Mike Bullet Lehto His value to the team was apparent in the next gatrie as the Saints were beaten Z1-6 by Sault Colligiate in Canada. D J. Frazier scored the lone T. D. An injury put A. Frazier out for the season in this one. Rogers City came to town and took the crippled to camp Z5-6. Lehto lirnped for 50 yards with a pass from Massey for the six pointer. Playing at night for the second time the LaSalle team couldn't get their defense organized and lost 32-18. Scoring were Lehto, A. Frazier, and Olmstead. A once beaten Cheboygan High team handed St. Ignace a 33-7 licking on our home grounds. Massey was put out of commission in the opening minutes. All-stater Tommy McGinn led them with four T. D.'s. Closing out the season on the warpath the Saints crushed Hillman 52-O. Scoring in the rout were J. Frazier, Lehto, and LaRocque with two'and Adams along with Olmstead scored once. St. Ignace had the unusual distinction of being probably the only upper peninsula team to play only teams from the lower peninsula and a foreign one but not a single game' with a U.P. foe. The Saints were the second highest scoring team in the U.P. Trophys were awarded to Mike Lehto as the Most Valuable Player, Ron Walker as the Best Tackler, and Arnie Frazier as the Best Blocker. ,,......,.......,,.. .,............,, R.H . A. Festivities started by the election of a king and queen to preside over the Homecoming. Two Seniors, Carolyn Krause av' Tony Earl were elected. Next came the traditional State Street parade, with homerooms and entering floats. The Juniors' float was acclaimed by many to be the best. The big afternoon brought ideal football Weather, a spirited crowd, and a tremendous 52-O victory for the Saints over Hillman. It was the hilarious story of a teenage girl trying to get her older sister married off, and how she lost the good graces of both her family and her friends before she was able to straighten things out. 'Joanne Huyck, as Maudie, was the star of the play. It was directed by Mr. Story and presented on April Z3 and 24, 1953.
