Darting in and out of rooms and buildings, Mr. Long is always occupied with school business. His job as principal requires long hours and hard work. For- tunately Mr. Long has two capable assistants-Miss Newton and Mr. Stanford. Miss Newton acts in two major capacities. She is the curriculum advisor and the director of counselors. In both cases she exerts a great amount of influence on student activities. Mr. Stanford serves as the supervisor of attendance activi- ties. He also handles the unpleasant duty of disciplining unruly students. These, of course, are only the major services of our vice-principals. Mr. Long is for- tunate to have such competent assistants. Harvey Stanford Vice Principal Ulis Newton Vice Principal -27-

Capaliiefprincipais Direct Student Activities Walter V. Long Principal TO THE SENIORS OF THE CLASS OF 1962: I congratulate you upon your graduation. I know your achievement warms the hearts of your parents, your friends and the faculty. Now, given your normal span of life, you have fifty useful years ahead of each of you to do with what you will in making the world a better place in which to live. As- suming this fifty years of work, there will be, in round numbers, 22,500 man years of potential usefulness released for action. The force of this energy, properly applied, can hardly be over estimated. Unfortunately, the world into which this energy is to be released is not a perfect one. However, we can comfort ourselves with the thought that if it were perfect there would be little challenge and without challenge there could be little progress. We hear many complain of world conditions and even use these as excuses for not pushing forward, saying whats the use. Actually your opportunity is an enviable one. Not only are there frontiers to conquer every way we look upon this globe Of Ours, but frontiers in conquering space. There are opportunities everywhere for service and improvement. XY!hat we need is preparation, a desire to push forward, and to be alert to take advantage of every situation. I wish you success and happiness. -26..

unselors Superintenol Ourfldrainin , Much of the success of students in their later life is owed to the school they attend and the courses they study. While at LVHS students are fortunate in having the assistance of four able counselors. The counselors do not direct the students' future plansg instead they help the student decide for himself. Miss Dawson and Mr. George are always available to pupils of the upper classes. They under- stand the higher cducational institutions, and their suggestions are valuable. Mrs. Stanford and Mr. Roe are happy to aid the bewildered students entering as Sophomores. Each student has a friend and advisor in his counselor.
