This year the Las Lomas varsity had a very impressive season, as its 5-2-l record placed it only one-half game behind champion Piedmont in the race for the Foothill Division crown. After dropping the season opener, 20-U, to Oakland High, the fired-up Knights rolled over the Iohn Swett Indians, 33-O. ln a hard-fought, defensive battle, the Knights, scoring the only tally early in the game, managed to defeat a strong Alham- bra team, 7-O. Against highly favored Pleasant Hill, Las Lomas, although ending the game with a 6-6 deadlock, played, according to Head Coach Duane Louis, its best game of the year. The team piled up l5 first downs to the opponents' 2, while netting 250 yards to 50 by the Rams. ln the league opener against Miramonte, the Las Lomas grid men ran wild, as they tallied a massive 47 points while holding the Matadors to no score. Against a fired-up San Ramon eleven, the Knights were A swarm of Alhambra gridmen close in on halfback Jim Murphy, while Phil Rutschow and Steve White look on. able to eke out only a 6-U win. The traditional battle with Acalanes found the Knights overpow- ering their opponents, as they downed the Dons 7-U. The final game was a heartbreaker for Las Lomas, for Piedmont came from behind in the third quarter to win the game, and also the cham- pionship, 19-7. At the Football Banquet, held after the season's close, many Knights were honored with awards: Mike Hair, Most Valuable Playerg lim Sisler, Most Valuable Back: Harold Rogers, Most Valu- able Linemanp Steve White, Coaches' Award: Rick Miles and Steve White, team captains. The Knights should again be contending for the championship next year, as the many juniors on next year's varsity, and the excellent players coming up from the l.V.'s, should form a winning team. It sustained the amazing winning streak posted by last year's team by downing eight successive opponents to capture the Foothill Division crown for the sec- ond consecutive season. The offense was sparked by a heavy, experienced line which cleared the way for the fleet-footed, hard-driving J.V. CO-COACHES Marvin Martin and Forrest Russell backfield. The aggressive Knight defense proved to be too strong for its opponents, as it shut out four teams While holding the others to low scores. Agile halfback Chris Nakano received the most outstanding player award, as he played a valu- able and important part in both offense and de- fense. The Iunior Knights were strong in both spirit and playing ability, and will make excel- lent material for next year's varsity. SCORES Las Lomas-23 ...... ....... New coach, Edrnundo Melendez, molded many returning lettermen and new talent into a strong tearn, which took third place in the league. After several close losses, the Knight grapplers proved their ability by trouncing a championship Acalanes team, 30-8. If the pattern of the last two years continues, next year the Knight team should be stronger than ever, a real threat to the Foothill Division championship. This year the Las Lomas basketball team again proved itself a championship club, as its 18 and 4 season gave it the Foothill Division crown lor the second consecutive year. The Knight live started the season cold, losing its first two games. From then on, however, the Knights were triumphant, losing only two oi 20 games, in very close decisions. The highlight of the year Was the post-season Tracy Tournament. After rolling over Elk Grove, 75-50, the victory-bound Knights came through with a 55-39 win over the Iohn Swett Indians. The climax came when, after trailing rough-and-tough Turlock for the first three quarters of the cham- pionship game, the inspired Knights fought to a 44-42 victory. At the basketball banquet, the entire team received letters and gold basketballs, while trophies were given to outstanding players. Tom Nichols received the Most Valuable Player award, Bob Nichols was chosen as Most Improved Player, Eric Nankivell received the Coach's Award, and Bob Nye was named Team Captain. Many congratulations are due to this time team, and especially to Coach Merrill Callow, who has aided and guided the team to two consecutive championships.
