DEDICATION Developing a school such as ours is a difficult task which requires the co- operation of both the students and the community. We, the students, are very grateful to those who have so unselfishly given of their time and energy for our benefit. The Parents Club have made many of our long-range ideas realities. Our swimming pool, completed three years ago, was one of their most successful undertakings. W'hen that was accomplished, their next project was to launch a fund-raising drive for the purchase of lights for our football field. Our library, a very necessary part of our education, is rapidly increasing in volume because of the generous donations on the part of our community. The local service clubs and organizations have encouraged our scholastic efforts in such ways as granting scholarships and awards to deserving students. Our underclassmen realize what they have to work towards when they see what those ahead of them have achieved. The merchants also have contributed greatly towards the success of many of our projects, especially school publications. We feel that the most rewarding enterprise for this year was lights for our field. After many hours of anxiety on the part of all, their installation was completed for our last football game of the season. lt is not enough to thank any one group or organization for the part it has played in the development of Las Lomas, for many have contributed to all phases of our school life. Therefore, in deepest appreciation, we thank our Parents Club, the merchants, and the people of Walnut Creekp to them we dedicate the l957 El Caballero. f,,1qf.,1 . . N s 5 f QQ gf --.5 H,-Q ,4- DMINISTRATION MH. NEIL M. PARSONS PRINCIPAL Six years have passed cmd Las Lomas has grown from a small to a large high school. At times it is even difficult to realize that, despite rapid growth, the teachers and students are still closely united. And we hope that Las Lomas will always be known as a friendly school with a wonderful spirit and with the informal and relaxed atmosphere which we consider so precious. We at Las Lomas have just completed another year -H-successful in scholarship, citizenship, and sports- manship. Our school has been recognized as a leader among schools in California because of its outstand- ing faculty, excellent guidance, and exceptional stu- dent body. You, as students, are to be complimented on the excellence of your teams in athletics, for the record you have shown in scholarship, and for the leadership you have shown in student body govern- ment. Your parents and the members of the community have made these accomplishments a realization. We are all highly indebted to those who have made pos- sible our football field lights this year and we recog- nize the many fine contributions that have been given us in years past. SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHCOLS Mr. Neil Parsons, as the Superintendent of the Acalanes High School District, is responsible for co- ordinating curriculum and personnel planning, and is concerned with matters of finance and school construc- tion in our area. Since Mr. Parsons' election to this office in l94l, educational facilities of the Lafayette, Walnut Creek, and Orinda communities have been greatly expanded. At one time Acalanes High School represented our district. Now, Las Lomas and Miramonte High Schools have been added to alleviate the congestion in the Walnut Creek and Orinda areas. Already, Mr. Parsons and the members of the Board of Trustees are planning conferences with school planners and architects to prepare for a fourth high school--'tentatively slated for Walnut Creek. MR. LELAND S. RUSSELL BOARD OF TRUSTEES LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Curl Newbury, Mr. Will C. Hall. Mrs. Alice McBride, Mr. William Freeman, Mr. Ralph Hall. DEAN OF GIRLS The Las Lomas Code of Ethics is particularly sig- nificant tor our school, Although it is printed on the back oi the Knights' Guide, and copies are posted in each classroom l would like to repeat the key words adopted by our students: Loyalty, Attitude, Scholar- ship, Leadership, Obligation, Maturity, Appreciation, and Sportsmanship. These goals may seem high, but the students are working earnestly to achieve them. The first, that of Loyalty, includes most of the others in a broad sense. There is truly a fine spirit of loyalty on the part ot our student body to the school and to those principles for which it stands, The students display pride in Las Lomas and the parents and faculty are proud of the students and oi their excellent attitudes and achievements. lt is our hope that the seniors will attain future suc- cess and that they will carry on with the fine loyalty shown here. lt is also our feeling that the other students will continue to enjoy and contribute to the excellent spirit at Las Lomas. KATHRYN TAYLOR DEAN OF BOYS Time passes quickly. The year 1956-1957 has seen a great period oi consolidation in the traditions that have become Las Lomas High School during the past six years. We have become, in this short span of years, a powerful influence upon those about us in all phases of the school environment. In order to pre- serve our place, it is the moral obligation of each student to make a success of today and then we need not worry about tomorrow. We repeat, time passes quickly. There is nothing we can do about it as in- dividuals except to see as far as possible that it passes truitiully. Each and every one oi us must always l.eep in mind during our daily endeavors for ourselves and Las Lomas that, whether we will it or not we cannot iourney without leaving footprints, and others will follow where we go because we have marked the way. Activities at this group included selling tickets and pompons at games, planning rallies and skits, making posters for the games, and supervising conduct in the rooting sections. This committee also helped a great deal in selling bonds for our football lights, and it put on the second dance ot the year, the Gridiron Gavottef' Las Lomas Knight vs. Acalanes Don. Icon Schuppert accepts Sportsmanship trophy Lom Mr. Russell on behalf of Las Lomas. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL This year Las Lomas' Little Knights ended a successful season with a four win, three loss and one tie record. Coached by Mr. Butler and Mr. Brott, the l.V. team beat Amador, Miramonte, Antioch, and Acalanes. The season's opener was the Amador tussle. Las Lomas seemed to have no difficulty dropping the Dons from Pleasanton in a well-played game. Next came Miramonte, and our cousins from Orinda' almost shocked the Knights by their quick maneuverability and efficient ball handling. The Knights came out on top, however, by only one touchdown. The first league game was played against Antioch, and the Knights squeezed by with a one-point victory. Pleasant Hill followed and became the game with the biggest surprises and greatest disappointments. The final gun found the l.V.s making their way homeward on the tail-end of the score. ln the following three games against Mt. Diablo, Pittsburg, and Pacifica, re- spectively, the l.V.s had one disappointment after another, losing the first two by close scores and tieing the third. The team, said Coach Butler, didn't have enough desire to win in these games, and some- times we were completely outplayedf' He added later, The team usually cannot get together a sustained drive. The last game with Acalanes was a fitting end for the season, however. The l.V.s, playing on their own field and under their own lights, com- pletely swamped the opposition with a series of sustained drives. This gave them their fourth win, a well-deserved one it was. VARSITY The Block LL Society is designed to build up interest in boys' sports at Las Lomas, and to promote participation and competition in these sports. The aims of this organization are to encourage student support of school athletic functions, and to improve citizenship and sportsmanship records. The Block LL has just completed a most successful year in fulfilling these ideals. BLOCK LL This year has been a busy one for the Block LL. Its many activities included several car washes, two booths for the Council oi Organizations' Carnival, an initiation dinner for new members, and the organizations regular meetings. Block LL is under the direction of lim Symington, President: Herb Foster, Vice-President: Wally Busch, Secretary-Treas urerg and Mr. Vere Butler who acted as the advisor. .I.V. G.A.A. also sponsors many special events, such as the Fun Fest, an annual awards dinner, a Lick the Dons sucker sale, a synchronized swim show, a Faculty vs. All-Star volleyball qame, and booths in the annual Carnival. Membership in this organization is earned by participating IC ASSOCIATION in two-thirds of the games played during one sports season. However, G.A.A. is not all play. This club has a very well organized cabinet and council which carry out all G.A.A. business and plan the sports seasons and special activities for each year. The EL CABALLERO is the chief responsibility of a very ambitious group of people, headed this year by Annette Rcxmelli and Madeline Deklotz, editors. Many hours were spent by the entire class schedul- ing pictures, writing and typing copy, selling ads. reading proof, and making lists of names. Every deadline was a crisis that was met with cheerful smiles, It is to be hoped that this book is an adequate representation of the core and work that Went into it, that the pictures will serve to jog your memories from time to time, and that the remem- brances of people and activities will be a valuable aid in remembering Las Lomas, lf-357.
