IIMMY HARVEY after the Ysleta game, had a fine extra-point record and received a place on the All-State third team. Alamogordo was the first opponent the Bull- dogs met in 1947. The Crucens were still a bit ragged, especially in the line, but the difficulties were not serious. Every Bulldog back scored, Medina twice, turning the game into a 31-0 rout. Ysleta, an early season powerhouse packed with talent, handed Las Cruces its first loss. Less Stamper of Ysleta played his finest game of the season. Stamper scored twice, Sammy once, and, except for an extra point, the two stars had all the scoring honors in the 13-6 game. ' FOOTBALL REVIEW In 1947, Las Cruces turned out one of the best football teams that the Bulldogs have fielded in recent years. Coach Durham's squad had a season record of five victories and two defegts. Sammy Medina, the sensational right half- back, who was All-State in 1946, had a fine season in spite of injuries which gave him trouble all year. Key man in the T formation which the Bull- dogs used was Junior Apodaca. He, together with Medina, Robert Herron, the fullback, and Felipe Trujillo the left half, made the formation click. In the line, Jerry Hawkins and Harold Vance. right guard and center, were outstanding. The rest of the regular line, Edgar McClain, Charlie Perea, Frank Brownfield, Bill Denney and Allan Gray, turned in consistently good per- formances. h As usual there were several of the reserves who saw plenty of action and sometimes out- shone the regulars. Among these were Ben Boykin at quarter backg Dick Armijo at right endg Phillip Sanders and Henderson Baker at centerg and Henry Telles, the Bulldogs' place- kicking specialist. 'QU Bulldog teams held both first and second place honors in the 1947 New Mexico high-school football season. The green and white Bulldogs of Albu- querque annexed the state crown, while the Las Cruces Bulldogs. defeated in New Mexico only by Albuquerque. took second place. The northern Bulldogs had plenty of power and used it in their 20-0 victory over their southern rivals. Bitter cold and a strong wind handicapped both teams, but Las Cruces managed to gain 56 yards by passing. Bob Cook, Albu- querque's 200-pound battering ram, made two of his team's touchdowns. while his speedster running mate made the other. Lordsburg played fine football in the first half and gained a 13-0 half- time advantage. The Bulldogs came back and played even finer foot- ball in the second half. The Bulldogs' ground nia- chine. with Heriol and Medina doing most of the ball-carrying, ate up the yardage in three long scoring drives. Twice Medina carried the ball over the goal line from inside the 5 yard stripe. The third time Felipe Trujillo scored from the 4. Telles added the fin- ishing touches to the 21- 13 victory that clinched the District Four Cham- pionship. 'ilk' 9? ...js 1-aa: - w X M Ji? XV? Q CHEER LEADERS CARl,liw1i LAW.
