'Numa R' INN, 2 Vase: X The Twentieth Anniversary Two decades ago, as a result of the union of five school districts and the efforts of our taxpayers, Las Cruces Union High School came into existence and a new building was erected. Old Central High School gave up its students who went to the new location on Alameda and Lucero Avenue. Twenty years ago the latest fashions for girls called for very short bobs with straight bangs across the forehead and dresses with hip-length waistlines. L.C.U.H.S. had a girls' basketball team-girls dressed in voluminous bloomers which swished sassily around their knees. From 1926 through 1937 Mr. F. H. Lynn held the office of superintendent of the school. ln 1938 Mr. Conlee became the superintendent and Mr. T. J. Mayfield was the principal. ln 1940 Mr. J. L. Gill became the principal, and he has con- tinued in that position to the present time. Through the years many honors have come to the school and its students. The trophy cases in the hall have become crowded with cups, ribbons and medals. In 1928 the basketball team won second place in the state. ln 194-1 and again in 1915 they were state champs. Las Cruces football teams have brought their share of glory to the school, too. Great teams and great games have helped to advertise thc school throughout New Mexico and the Southwest. A regular organized physical education department was begun in 1937 with little in the way of games or equipment. 'Today it offers to all students a program of basketball, football, pass and touch ball, soccer, volley ball, tumbling, boxing and softball. Perhaps the greatest development in the home economics department is the change from merely courses in cooking and scewing to a complete curriculum in liomcniaking. ln l9l'i2i a modern. convenient cottage was built for the girls. The agriculture department has grown to be the biggest in the state, and this ycar received the silver emblem for outstanding achievement-the first time any M-w Mexico chapter of 1-'.F.A. has received this recognition. lndividual members have received many awards. ln 1945 Lonnie Beyer received the American Farmer llegrcc. ln 1940 a L.C.U.H.S. team vs on the National Stock Judging championship. ln 19-L1 and again in 1942 L.C.L'.H.S. commercial students won the Interna- tional O. G. A. first place award-the first time in the history of the organization that any school won the award two years consecutively. Students from Lnion High School have won many individual honors and have rankcd high in scholastic tests, essay, speech and dramatic contests. In 1929 Edward Gregg won a national science essay contest and a 555,000 scholarship. ln 19-1-2 Stanley llolder won a 830,000 scholarship in a l'an-American essay contest. ln IOLIS Anita Mc-Mahan was chosen state D. A. li. representative and won a S100 vs ar bond. ln the same year John Gill, Jr. won a Vtfestinghouse trip to Washington, IJ. C. for his science essay. Graduates and former students played an important part in World War ll. Un our service flag are 4103 blue stars and 15 gold ones for those who gave the last full measure of devotion. On this twentieth anniversary the departing seniors salute you. L.C.U.H.S. May you continue to be the grand old high school so many seniors have known. Joseph W. Taylor, presidentg Jesse U. Richardson, clerkg Edwin Mechem, memberg W. P. Thorpe, vice-presidentg Cruz Alvarez, mem- ber. The five board members who represent the district which united to form the Union High School are busy men, but they are also interested in education. We appreciate their value as good citizens who work for our interests. Mr. Taylor represents East Picachog Mr. Richardson, Mesilla Parkg Mr. Mechem, Las Crucesg Mr. Thorpe, Dona Anag and Mr. Alvarez, Old Mesilla. MR. C. S. CONLEE Mr. Conlee came lo Las Cruces in I933 as superin- Jrendenr of 'rhe ci+y schools and in i937 he also became superinlendenl of 'rhe Union High school. He has worked hard in The inferesls of our public schools and is recog- nized as a capable. conscienlious schoolman. MR. J. l.. GILL Mr. Gill became principal of L.C.U.l-l.S. in I94O. l-le has developed a very close coniacl wilh all Those who make up lhe school. l-le is recognized as a friend and counselor by sfudenls and Jreachers alike. in A Q THE FACULTY Row 1: Row 22 gl 5 5 Q. f S5 It .,.,, 2 fi 3' Q Mr. Michael Taylor, World History: Mrs. H. He is an excellent violinist and often plays with the orchestra. The boys and girls of Las Cruces are indeed fortunate in having such an able band and orchestra director as Mr. Bender. The main events of the year for the orchestra were the performance before the Junior play, the short con- MR. KENNETH BEND-ER cerf given iusf before the Senior play, and the commence- ment exercises. The renditions especially outstanding dur- ing the year have been Western World overture and selections from Bohemian Girl.
