A 1 -J We hope you will enjoy this class night exercise we have planned for you tonight. As we go back over our years of the 'b9, we want to bring to you some of the memories which have made our four years of High School at Larwill so wonderful. We have prepared four scenes for you tonight. First, we have the one which starts us off on our long journey to Cal- ifornia and to gold. Second there is the campfire scene where we dance and are gay. Third, we are in the desert and getting homesick, which provides an ideal time for reminis- cing. Lastly, we have arrived in California, and are now seeking our fortunes. I wish to say NThanksn in behalf of all the Seniors, to you, our parents, who have made it possible for us to reach our goal, and to you teachers who have guided us through these twelve years. Q Tomorrow morning we are leaving on our trip north. This means quite a bit to us, for it's the one big'thing we've worked for through our four years of High School. Thursday night we will leave old LHS to embark on'new roads of life. No matter where we go or what we do, I'm sure we'll never forget the big and little things that happened at Larwill during our school life. I Now, again, on behalf of this Senior Class, I wish to bid you nwelcomen and hope you will enjoy our program. n Lois Myers OUTCOME AMBITION WEAKNESS PET SAYING NICTQBLIXME NAME is S4 o E o 914 we-I C143 o Sam 33 nfm be S-.S+ Od .-44-v ma: .QS-Q oo G30 mm Pu-I .Cai -po r-'IQ-4 mv CDO 32 T200 sf ag GO FIU!! 8 CD -.-'I 4-J GS M U1 ,. 0 rn 3 GDS Uh 22 - o- Lf' 4-3 -P ID 4251 :z +5 'U KD -LJ-I-7 'dm ID -D U5 C aC! 0 ? ms S3 .C O CD fb 43 .Q-I-3 r-10 483 Q a S-e CD F-4 CD Eco Oh!! It is now 50 years later, in 1999, 'and the '49ers are having their an ual class reunion. We kN,w.,fjare gathered on the site where gold'was discovered-- a gold fnling from someones tooth. Everyone is roasting hot dogs, toasting marshmallows, telling stories, and reminiscing. The man standing on the soap box giving the loud oration is just Sheldon Mgggg. He is running for United States Senator from Indiana. He has been trying to get elected for the last 20 years. It could be, one of the Larwill boys will filibuster in Congress yet. My, I wonder who that poor, weatherbeaten, old man is, with the long white beard? He surely doesn't belongilmthis class reunion. Why, yes, he does. It is Dwight Dgeter--guess he gave up shaving altogether. Because of his undying ambition and prompt punctuality in school, he has been anightlatchman for a Burlesque Show for 30 years. I'll agree, he's seen many changes in those years. Remember those four girls that used to chum around together in school? There was Connie Smith, Lglg gygrs, Hartman, Marlouise gchuh, and Vega Fritz. They ares tting over there by the fire toasting marshmallows. Let's go over and see what they've been doing all these years. Connie .tells us she is a successful radio and recording artist. Her stage name is nHillvBill1e-M1llie,W Yogg favorite ginger gf the homespun ballads America loves best. You'd hardly recognize Lois--she has lost her school girl figure, and she is pretty busy with that family of 515 child- ren. Her ambition was to have a large family--we never dreamed how large it would be. The lady in the long, mannish-ill-fitting dresszlsharlouise. She is a Home Economics Teacher at Larwill Abnormal College. It se ms she could never get away from the long-styled clothes of Senior Days. ' Vera has just confessed that she is the author who writes those horror-love-imagination thrillers. that the teachers take away from students, mothers burn and ministers preach about- all under another name of course. CYou can see why this prophecy is as it isj. That peroxide blonde with the frizzled hair is Betiy Bghn- stedt. She has lost her eyesight from a wreck, several years ago, in her high-powered limousine. She is being helped around by her seeing-eye rooster, Crusoe. Lately she has been touring the country giving lectures on Uwhy Should You Be Rich, When You Have To Pay Income Tax?N Betti's best girl friend, Phyllis Elgy is a waitress in the fame s Drive-In near Dallas, Texas. iShe has received sonmny large tips, that she is planning on buying half-interest in the place. . .L ' It looks like business is not as good as it could be for Richard Mitchell. He is carrying a little black box with Eim.' In school, he was always talking about being a vet- erinarian--probably has the little black box in case of an emergency call. sWWhat's that? Youfre not a Doctor? A shoe Shiner in the lobby of the Waldorf-Astoria.N Keep them shining, Dick--you sure had us fooled. - Sounds like a car driving up. Perhaps moreaafour classmates arriving. It looks like a taxi from the Lynch Checkered Cab Company. Lyle Lvnch as you know, is the owner of the great concern, call PUSHUP 1-2-3-4, We're glad that Lyle brought some of our classmates with him. There is Betty Walgeck and her newly acquired husband, Les. They have just rocketed back from Mars, where they have been raising Uranium beams for the Air Rocket Force. Stepping from the taxi is another distinguished member of our classg Father Leolan Pressler, Since graduation from the Cemetery, he has been a missionary in the wilds of Aus- tralia. Leolan always was good at preaching on the Christ- ian way of life, and we know he has greatly increased the number of civilized people in that country. . Out steps another classmate, robmdinvdmte ermine, and deck- ed with rubies of the rarest quality. It is GlQILa Myers, of Syracuse fame. While taking her vacation around .the world on a cattle boat, she met a rich matador, whom she married. They are now living on one of the large estates along the shores of beautiful Larwill Lake. These beautiful million dollar estates,'byLthe1 mp are owned by James Q. Creager. Jim saw great possibilities in making Larwill Lake one of the leading vacation spots in the coun- try. He became a millionaire overnight and put Larwill on the vacation map. Q Lavon Kitson is on the Larwill Abnormal Teaching Staff. He has charge of the music department. His arrangement of, WLouie, Drop That Gun,' with the Larwill Philharmonic Sym- phony has been recorded by Gum Label and is highly popular with the older set. Norene Hull is a rhumba dance instructor in the 0Shake- Don't Break It,u Dance Studio. She guarantees to teach you how to rhumba in two easy lessons for only 350. Along the lazy stream, we see two lovers strolling hand in hand, under the moonlight. From the distance it looks like Elggslg Stidham, long ago, Mrs. Gene Souder, andImu'husband. Both are working for the Joe Lewis Modeling Agency. Flossie is a beautician, noted fer her unique methods if dying models hair. Gene is a photographer specializing in models in Chinese bathing suits. , If anyone has the inclination to get married, step right this way--Justice of the Peace, Noel Medley, is with us. He always was romantically inclined, and now manages a harem. Lola Qgy Western came to the reunion. I would think that Lola, having lifed in the White House all these years, would hardly consider a class reunion an affair that would require her presence. After all, being chief scrub woman in the President's Mansion is quite a noble line of work, Margaret Marker, on the other hand, is in quite a different kind of work. She has been doing extensive research in Washington for her new book, NThe Practical Way To Study Civics.W During her Senior year, she was getting many ideas on how the new book should be written, That poor, stooped old man with the red toupee, certainly looks familar. Why, of course, that is Charles Hel-rtzfeiman, gr. He's been a street cleaner in Charleston, West Virginia since he graduated from school. He has tried innumerable times to be promoted to sidewalk cleaner, but can never quite make the curb. Here comes Hgnnie Wolfe and Lynn K,1j,ngama.n. up from the beach, after a vigorous swim. Lynn had decided to live a hermit's life. It must give him much joy to be alone, he is operat- ing a filling station in the midst of Death Valley. Ronnie Wolfe is playing character parts in the movies. At the Senior Class Play, a talent scout heard him and signed him, with the Sure Failing Studios, with a life time contract. The happily married couple doing the new fangled dance is the former Barbara Kistler and her midget husband. They met while Barbara was chief cook and bottle washer in a lumber camp in the North Woods. Her husband was a tree-topper. Who makes the blood curdling scream in the ,midd1e.of. the night? Whose shadow moves in the moonlight? Lockycurdcor-- NThe Beast With Ten Bloody Fingersn is on the prowl. This is the opening speech of the thriller-diller-killer-mystery- murder Albert of the Digger on the radio. HFrankensteinH Beast Murderer O'White, alias It stars two members of this class Bohnstedt, who plays the leading role His bloody right-hand assistant is .Robert White. He is the friendly grave- digger, whose favorite motto is, HMy work begins,,when'your life endsn. ' Over by the rock flexing his muscles, is Richard, WThe Turtle TameruSchuman. Soon after he finished school he captured the famous 'Busco Turtle. It was twice as large as had been anticipated and became quite an attraction. That accounts for 28 of the original Class of '49, but where is our missing member? Listen' I hear the soft bray of donkeys coming along Fpetraiii That must be Grace Strattan. It sounds like she might be driving up with some of her thoroughbreds. When she spoke of thoroughbreds in school, YE all supposed she meant horses, but you can't be right all e ime. I wonder who the old woman is she has with her. She hobbles on a cane and a crutch. It's none other than our Senior Class Sponsor--Miss Esarey. Vera Fritz A CLASS Morro e, of' the Senior Class of 'LQ have chosen as our motto, WKnowledge Comes but Wisdom Lingersn. Throughout our school days we have been acquiring knowledge, learning by doing, and preparing for the future. Each course has strengthened us, developing wisdom, which is the ability to use what we have acquired so as to be of value to ourselves and to others. And so as we go out into the world we know that the wisdom gained from our' education the past twelve years will stay with us and help us be successful in our future. Richard Schuman CLASS COLORS green and white for our class colors.' Green like the green in jewels of jade and emerald, stands for .' growth and development. White is the color of pure snow, and stands for purity. We will, in the future, strive to keep growing and develop- ing. We shall always strive to build toward the better and higher things in life. ElQEkQ27f, the Senior Class of l9h9 have chosen the colors Charles Heintzelman, Jr. THE crass or ao' hg we started out twelve years ago Koh' Susanna! ,fi . In our Freshmen year we had our fun, We couldn't settle down, But now that we are proud 58h10fl, We're really goin' to town. When we were silly Sophomores, We just were drifting through, Except for our valedictorian, larlouise Jean Schuh. When we were jolly Juniors, Miss Fowler was our guide, She pushed us through some trying times, And never let us slide. Now that we have reached our goal, We're happy as can be, We hope that to this big wide world, We can find the key. We had heard whispered rumors that there was gold in them 'thar hills. There were people in our party from all parts of the county when we started our Freshman year. From Richland Township there was, Harold Blanchard, Betty Bohnstedt, Martha Cramer, Dean Eberly, Phyllis Eley, Vera Fritz, Betty Gable, Charles Heintzelman, Jr., Rex King, Barbara Kistler, Melvin Kistler, Lester Mena zie, Harold Mitchell, Richard Mitchell, Mary Musselman, Lois Myers, Richard Pichard, Thelma Ray, Richard Schuman, Mary Schrader, Marlouise Schuh, Connie Smith, Robert Shook, Flos- sie Stidham, Linda Stidham, Grace Strattan, Betty Waldeck, and Gene Souder. One man from Columbia Township was James Creager. Befbre we started our long journey through high school, we held ameet- ing to elect officers to govern this Larwill caravan. As President we elected Lavon Kitsong Vice-President,.ReX.K1ngg Sec't-Treasurer, Lois M ersg and Miss Arnold, Sponsor. We were sorry to lose six of our party the first year. Richf ard Pichard, Mary Musselman, James Folk, Donna McCullough, Phyllis Rose, and Melvin Kistler moved to other schools or found work. V As Freshman, the girls won the inter-class tourney, the first Freshman girls ever to win this title in Larvrlll H1ghSchool. This ended the first year of our journey. Robert White came from Indianapolis, Robert Bridges from Fort Wayne and George Klingaman from Elkhart. Our group had several people interested in sports. Dwight Deeter won the Local Cross Country Run and Robert Shook was awarded the free-throw medal. Charles Heintzelman, Jr. re- presented Larwill in the Dramatic Reading Contest in Colum- bia City. We used as our theme, WLife On a Southern Plantation.N This ended our Junior year and we were ready for the last year of journey. At last, in the fall of V48 we were ready to cross the last of the barriers, and gold was not far off. We had left a lot of members back along the trail, but only success and riches lay before us. Rex King left us to settle on a farm: Robert White was elected to replace Rex as our Vicea-PPesi+ dent. After a few weeks of school, Harold Blanchard a d Robert Shook left us to work. The band and an ensemble furnished music, Seniors the opening and closing prayers, Vera Fritz CLASS FLOWER . 4 , the class of 'Q9, have chosen the Red Carnation 4 as our flower. The carnation is a sturdy plant and the red color stands for bravery. Like the carnation, we have developed into sturdy young people. We have under gone changes and have learned to be good citizens of our country and community. We will be the uture leaders of our country and shall keep striving toward greater things. We will not be content with things as they are but will try to accomplish better things for the future. As the carnation grew in strength, we have grown in knowl- edge. Our education' will help us live in the world with a better understanding. A I Lola Joy Western VALWDICTOHY arents, teachers, and friends, we the forty-niners of Larwill High, are travelers on the high road of learning and tonight we pause at a sharp bend in the way. Until now we have shared the comfort and com- panionship of a closely knit group. From this point on, there are as many small paths as there are individuals. We are turning our backs on the planned life of the class- rooms at Larwill. From here forward, we make our own decisions, our coming and going untimed by the bell, our only discipline, our conscience. Childhood and early youth are in the past. They appear formless and disorganized as they fade into -the distance. We have shed them like used, outgrown garments, keenly aware that now more will be expected and less forgiven us. eThose shortcomings and lapses, overlooked in the very young, have no place in the adult world. Our approaches to life's demands must be geared to the swift era in which we are living and the first step in this ad- justment is to make certain that our thinking is clear. In an age when man will travel faster than the speed of sound, there is no place for slow mental reactions. It would be a disadvantage for. us to consider ourselves Ueducatedu simply because we have completed one small phase of the endless process of learning. Everyone should strive to keep aglow the flame of Ndiscontentu which inspires and beckons you to go forward. with but one life to live, one set of energies to use, it is the duty of each graduate to thoughtfully consider by what definite means he can best further and contribute to humanity, Our lives should not be considered as level roads, but as roads reaching upward toward our goals in life. We should be determined to live our lives each day as we would climb a steep mountain, slowly but steadily giving an occasional glance toward the top to keep the goal in view. We should take time out for amusement when we may and lend a hand when necessary to a fellow climber who finds the going too rough. May we travel che rfully, confident that the peak, when reached, will be a worthy climax to the long steep Journey we will have completed, fe realize we could not have completed even the first lap of our journey without the understanding and encouragment of our thoughtful parents and patient teachers. I am sure that all of us wish to express our thanks to each and everyone of you for being our guests tonight and for making possible this educational stepping-stone to our future careers. Marlouise Schuh , PRESENTATION OF SCEPTRE ll Senior Class of 1949, present you with this Sceptre, which represents good sportsmanship, - friendship, and.high ideals. The first high school club was organized in S'-' It works in both high schools and colleges. The high school groups are prevocational and college preparatory and are known as FTA clubs. College groups are definitely professional and are known as Chacters. The main purpose of the high school clubs is to induct the spirit of the teaching profession into the student before actually preparing for it. In this way the prospective teacher will be impressed with the dignity and importance of his future work and is given the vision of his responsibil- ities and privileges. Membership in these junior groups, therefore, will help in the attainment of these desired ends. There are many projects which an FTA Club may undertake. A few of them are: substitute teaching, Sunday School teach- ing, programs, beautifying campus, observing .mimerican Education week, and making a study of public schools and their needs. Louise Buntain CTORUS he High School Chorus has fifty-six members this I I year. There is a mixed chorus and a girls' uchoruq, In November the chorus sang for Visitation Day.
