The day we set foot into the jr. High, everyone was ready for us. The administration and faculty knew who we were. Our reputation gave us a feeling of pride and to- getherness that never changed. Soon, the high school pre- pared itself, and the jr. High sighed with relief. Confidence was the word that described the sopho- mores of 1970. We had confidence that we'd make it in high school, and the upperclassmen soon agreed. With the cry of sofmore leadership , we elected I-Iaynie, Grubbs, and Schartz as our class officers. Frazier led our confused but improving class yells. We helped the musical, H.M.S. Pinafore , roll to success. It was fun being a sophomore, but we looked ahead to the next year. Class projects were the bond that held the juniors of '71 together. Urban, Olsen, and Loughrige led our class as Kirchgassner cheered us on. When we picked out our class rings, we were the center of the school--we be- longed. The musical that year was Bye, Bye Birdie , but Tl-IE event of the year was the jr. Class play, Profes- sor, how could you? With an urge to change tradition, we put on the best prom in LHS history. Our Senior year was something special. Beginning with a change in school policy and a continuing change in in the landscape, this year was filled with challenges. We challenged Urban, Fleske, and Olson to lead our class, Dawson was our class cheerleader. Our football season was a success as we clinched the disu-ict title and took second in regionals. Linda reigned as our football Home- coming queen. For the second year in a row, we captured the 1st place trophy from the St. john Invitational Basket- ball Tournament. Rei gning over our Homecoming victory was Susan, our All-Winter Sports Queen. We selected our most talented, congenial, spirited, and All-around students, and crowned the Chieftan Royalty. One day near the end of january, we realized graduation was not so far away. The arrival of Senior keys, the selection of announcements, and the measuring for caps and gowns brought past memories and future dreams to most Seniors. Yes, we're ready to leave L.H.S.! We'll bid her halls adieu. But we'll never forget, And she'll never forget. . . TI-IE CLASS OF 1972 3 ' 5 , gh, 2 1 , T T if P: N W V V g .si EASE READ THE ,. ff A 'ities ge yourse T e d h' ! In the place of the traditional crowning of a single couple, four different types of royalty were selected. The Most Talented girl and boy were chosen for their accomplishments in a specific area, the Most Congenial girl and boy were selected for friendly personalities, the Most Spirited girl and boy were chosen for their support and participation in school activities. The best combi- nation of the previous characteristics resulted in the selection of the All-Around girl and boy. Greg Dawson was the class Cheerleader during his Senior year. He was active in Football, Wrestling, and Weight Lifting. He was a member of Chorus and Let- termans Club. MOST TALENTED GIRL AND BOY Peggy Simmons, was the 1971 drum Majorette. She was successful at Piano Contest and as an accom- panist for Mixed Chorus. In this game, the weather played a large factor since the Indians didn't seem to be a webbed-footed football team. If we played again on dry land the results would be quite different. Larned 15 Pratt 6 The squad's mental toughness proved to be sincere as the Indians dominated all but one series of plays. The Greenbacks under the influ- ence of a 3-0 record and a fourth rating in the state were shut off by the Mofia and run over by the Big Machine. J 'll N c Larned 8 Lyons O The Larned Indians opened their season with a narrow but pride raising victory. The defense held, when the lack of polish in the offense wasn't there. Hays 21 Larned 12 The second disappointment came from the hands of the Hays Indians. After this loss the pride and status of the team was started in a down hill direction. But the Indians' will to win and have their own identity was so great that they were going to show everyone their capabilities. Larned 24 Russell 6 Again the Indians won a homecoming, and their mental toughness overcame that of size and brute strength. This was the most balanced game yet, as each the offense and defense scored twice. The Broncos' only score came late in the fourth quarter when the Indians' A team was sidelined. Garden City 21 Larned O This contest was asking alot of the smaller Indians. The Indians quickness and toughness was surpassed by the Buffalo's great size and breaks again told the game's outcome. Larned 18 Ho isington 13 This contest was again a challenge for the smaller Indians. To win would mean a possible state play-off berth. The Indians went into the game with the attitude that we've got to win, and tl'1at's just what they did. Thus, the Indians concluded their regular season successfully with a 5 win 4 loss record and a state play-off berth. Phillipsburg 35 Larned 14 Phillipsburg handed Larned still another dis- appointment as the quickness of their line and backs wasn't expected and caught the Indians off guard. One can see the results. Larned 26 Great Bend 21 Discovered later a must, the battle of these two rivals had alot riding on it. If won, Dodge along with Larned made the play-offs. This was said to be the Indians greatest moments as the crowd would surely agree. WICHITA KAPAUN 28 LARNED 14 The quickness of their line and the turf itself were the deciding factors in this contest. The Crusaders ran end sweeps that the smaller Indians just cou1dn't han- dle. Larned was still in the contest until late in the fourth quarter. Thus the Indians were guaranteed a tie for third in the State and a Regional runner- up spot. LARNED 30 PRATT 28 Again the Indians won a battle which could have gone either way. After two overtimes, in a back and forth contest of will, the Indians emerged victorious. Because of this attitude, driven into them by Larned's two fine coaches, they put together a team that made their opponents shiver. Although many en- tertained thoughts that this inexperienced ball club wouldn't amount to much, Larned compiled a record that would match most any team around. One lone starter, matched up with four lettermen of little ex- perience, made up the Indian's starting five. Marvin Webster and a new assistant, Les Wilson, combined talents and started the highly enthused round-ballers on the basics, gradually leading to the more complicated game. Tough practices on the game-winning aspect, defense, were continually emphasized. This seemed to pay off, as the Indians led the tough W.C.K.L. in de- fense, allowing each opponent only an average of 57.7 points per game. One of the many highlights of the past season, was a second consecutive first place finish at St. john's Invitational Tournament. Rated second, the Indians didn't make it to the finals as easy as thought. In the first round, a two point victory over Fairfield paved the way to the Pawnee County playoff with the Pawnee Heights Tigers. The holding of the Tigers to nine points at intermission, led the way to a twenty point scalp and a tremendous rise in Indian spirit. The last half of the season saw Larned battling closely with the league leaders but with dismay. These few losses came in the first quarter, as the opponents built up bulky leads. The Russell Regional was a first hand look at the new league Larned plans to enter during the 1973-74 season. The Indians played fine ball as they glided to the finals and attempted to overthrow the State ranked Monarchs of Thomas More Prep. It was a seesaw game added with much emotion, only to be decided late in the fourth quarter with three consecutive field goals by the opponents. The Indians leave 15 victories against 7 defeats be- hind to encourage next year-'s team on to greater achievements . K r , ' T : T il it , E-z.l'1!:5r, , f . In order to be- come a member, a student must possess three char- acteristics which the Honor Society holds in high esteem. These traits are Character, Scholarship, and Service . Membership carries much prestige at Larned High School, but it also carries a large amount of responsibility. Once a student is initiated, he is not only obligated to display the characteristics for which he was chosen, but is also expected to im- prove himself and his surroundings. Honor students are selected by a board consisting of the principal, counselor, and three teachers. NHS Officers at the 1972 initiation of the provision- al members. SOME OF THIS YEAR'S ACTION The topic that the 1971-72 Debate Squad had to cope with was as follows: Resolved: The jury System in the United States should be significantly changed. Six of this season's debators were novices, but the rest of the squad were old hands at this type of rhetoric. One of the highlights of this year's debate season was a trip to Dodge City Where Larned's participa- tion in their four-speaker tournament was rewarded by the attainment of a fourth place trophy. The team record at this tournament was 10-2 . The same four-speaker team, Zook- Morton, Vogt-Bowman, Went to Regionals at Wakeeney. There they earned a 5-1 and 1-5 record. The season record was 68- 74. 55 .5 N The LHS Pep Club with Cheerleaders and Miss Balzer, sponsor, in background. 'E I'm going to shake you till your teeth rattle! The ch-children! How many? 93 EA A21 Future ages will wonder at us as the present age wonders at us now. -- Pericles, 451 B. C. Starting with the committees being selected and ending with the day- after clean-up, prom was the event that brought the Junior class of 1971 together. The problem of finance was taken care of by sell- ing ballpoint pens, a raffle with scavenger hunt, a carnival, and the profits from the concession stand. For many months the cen- ter of activities was the Crane building. Finally, after tragedies and triumphs the National Guard Armory was decorated, the first time it had been used for this event. On May 15 the juniors bid farewell to the Seniors with a tur- key dinner which was followed by Dwight Young who spoke about morality. After the banquet, mu- sic was provided by Autumn . Everyone who participated in any way shared the success of PROM 1971. u 9 I I F1 King?-3 Ideas, plans, talents, work, problems, arguments, fun, enthusiasm - all contributed to the success of the 1971 Larned High School Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom.
