English 8 journalism DEDICATED TO - Mrs. Lee - She may not have the agility of a Mr. Fischer nor be as controversial as Mr. Schauner. She may not have the mind of a Mr, Gaede and her figure may not quite parallel that of Mr. Sneed. She may on occassion hide behind a wig and eat candy Qshe calls them cough dropsj by the dozen. But for her steadfastness and courage in outlasting the tumul- tous journalism class of 1971, we dedicate this, the greatest annual in LHS history, to Mrs. Betty M. Lee. Mrs. Lee takes time out of her busy schedule to play a game of hide and seek with the Journalism class. 3 . , 'g fetlfffw, - 1 -vw -f sf , 1 ,. i .V ,.,,,.. -.N ' ws,- . af: ,- - we if , , . r, ..,,,. 1' arf N ,axzrwzac-' M' -, , . .., ,,,. , A . 1 ff Q 'V 1 ,ie 'ir 3 Q X I 'W' 7 Ni2 i6Vf,i,rQi.a QQZWE5. . - Ir' ' ' 'fi-He:-s3'Yj,+-TiYZ Ef ...gy.3s,..,.v, ,,g r-'Q ,, i f. -RN -:,qy::,:,,15,45,g:1a5ng-f, -aw, V 213 12155-.' - .-.52-av'-ws s . mir--ra.,-1, n, 1:--:gp Z -11 new M f 21 1 . , 1, if ms, 'rf avr fa, 5 kgs' 'af H. f ff' W i his 2.313 9 -W N 83 1 4 ' ex xg. is get T st, ., 4 , Q, ., , 1- if-iffy . 1 '- 1 JSM K,,iFg,,- 'Ks W. J' ' 1 5 ---The Band f , A, , REMINISCIN it tai? 'fm' fi if When the class of '71 first walked through the Q doors of L. H. S. , not only did everyone see us, but N 'w-. they also felt the presence of an emerging quality of ' A leadership. 'K d Because of the way we yelled our class yell, every- X. ,V one could tell that we were just sophomores, but we 5 were proud ones at that. We chose Yust, Fleske, and George as our leaders with Grushnys as class cheer- leader. This was our first chance to show our talents in an all school musical, My Fair Lady. Yes, it was a good year to remember. Then all of a sudden, we were glorious juniors. More and more responsibilities became our own. Yust, Snyder, and Meyers were now our leaders and Fleske, our class cheerleader, helped us out-yell everyone else. We put on an outstanding Ir. Class play, You Can't Take It With You. The musical that year was H. M. S. Pinafore. We worked long hard hours to put on the prom of the century, Land of the Rising Sun. Would anyone like to buy fire extinguishers guaranteed for one full year? After what seemed like endless months, we became SENlORS at last. We elected Snyder, Yust, and Stone to lead us. George took position as class cheer- leader. Our last musical, Bye-Bye Birdie, was a smashing success. We painted the hill and stamped it permanently with our number 71. Those wonderful months of football, basketball, and wrestling were made complete with the crowning of our Football Homecoming Queen, Marsha Kay, our Winter Sports Homecoming Queen, Marsha jo, and the clinching of our 1st place title in the St. John Tournament. Lonnie and Cristi reigned as Chieftain King and Queen. Senior keys and announcements were chosen. As graduation neared, the realization that we had at last reached that final point of no return brought tears of sadness amid shouts of joy. Our high school years were truly unforgettable and in future years we shall look back and remember those glorious as well as sad moments we spent together, we THE CLASS OF 1971 ', o Q' 7 Q a , O ' 0 I ' - 0' ' ' 0 O . A. 9 Once upon a time on a cold, Windy winter day in the life of Mr. Schauner he entered upon his government classroom only to find the Senior class of 71 absent. Mr. Burkes, hearing the sobbing from across the hall, rushed to aid Schauner and Totten. The three stood in mournful silence. Intensive research was begun as the great minds of LHS groped for clues as to the whereabouts of the Class of 71. Eb THE CASE OF THE In frantic dismay the troubled Schauner rushed to break his perplexing discovery to Miss Totten. Miss Totten appeared near tears as Schauner delivered his bad tidings. Soon the news of the missing Seniors had spread throughout the school, The Big Three met in an emer- gency meeting to discuss the situation. Mr. Fischer put his vast mind in Search of the solu- tion. Yet still nothing occurred. MISSI G E IOR Meanwhile, Mr. Gaede went to great lengths to ex- plain that he didn't know what happened to the Seniors either. With the crises now resolved harmony was once again returned to Larned High School. . . Meanwhile, an overjoyed Mr. Schauner did some cel- ebrating on his own. 11 just as things were appearing the darkest Mr. Gathman was heard to exclaim I've got it! Mr. Gathman had solved the case of the missing Seniors! . . .And happiness once again roamed the halls of LHS. And so ends the Case of the Missing Seniors. And where had the Seniors been on that cold and windy winter day? just turn the page and find out. E 1 LONNIE SNYDER WAYNE YUST President Vice-President DEBBIE STONE JOHNNY GEORGE Sec. --Treas. First of all the team played with a look of pride and teamwork. The 41 man squad was considered one of Coach Geier's best teams. Larned's offense ran the wish-bone T made famous by the Texas Longhorns while the de- fense changed to the 4-3 formation used by many Pros. This year Larned tied for third in the WCKL with Great Bend and Garden City. The Indians also placed three members on the All-League team while eight others received honorable mention. LARNED 20 LYONS 2 The Larned Indians opened their season with a tri- umphant victory over Lyons. Although the offense and defense lacked polish, Coach Geier said the In- dians played well for their first game. The only Lyons score resulted from a blocked punt recovered in the end zone. DODGE CITY 22 LARNED 7 The Indians victory celebration over Lyons lasted only until the following Monday for Larned's next opponent was the highly ranked Dodge City De- mons. The week of the Dodge City game was def- initely the Indians' toughest work out of the season. The coaching staff of Geier, Sneed and Burkes had the Indians physically and mentally prepared to take it to 'em. Although the Indians played well, a few vital mistakes capitalized on by the highly touted Demons cost Larned the game. The Indians had, however, come closer to defeating the Demons than would any other WCKL team. LARNED 14 HAYS 7 When the Larned Indians met the Hays Indians a battle of defenses resulted. Both teams failed to score by half time, but Larned hit paydirt first after four minutes of the third quarter. Hays scored near the end of the third quarter to tie the score 7-7. Larned came back to prove best in the clutch scor- ing in the fourth quarter to capture the victory. I PRATT 13 LARNED 12 The Pratt game was one the Indians desperately needed to win, lost, and thought they were cheated out of victory. The game was another defensive battle in which neither of the offenses broke for a big play. The hard fought football game was played in ankle deep snow and mud. This figured signifi- cantly in a questionable two point conversion at- tempt by the Indians which was ruled unsuccessful thus denying Larned the victory, BALL HIGHLIGHTSI' LARNED 19 RUSSELL 0 The Indians 1971 Homecoming game was attended Qbut not enjoyedj by the Russell Broncos. For the first time the Indians played with the entire squad healthy and ready to go. The consequences proved disastrous for Russell as the Indians dominated the entire game. The smashing victory was the team's tribute to Homecoming Queen Marsha Young. LARNED 13 GARDEN CITY 6 The Indians encounter with Garden City was high- lighted once again by Larned's defense. The In- dian's offense was only able to generate two drives, both of which resulted for vital touchdowns. Yet the defense proved the winning factor for the Indians with five impressive goal line stands, the last' of which came in the closing seconds of the game. LARNED 38 KINSLEY 8 Kinsley was at the mercy of an obviously superior Larned Indian offense and defense. By half time the A team had so humbled the Coyotes that the B team was inserted for the remainder of the game. Every member of the LHS football squad partici- pated in the defeat of Kinsley. ELLINWOOD 14 LARNED 6 Ellinwood handed Larned one of the biggest disap- pointments of the season. All Indian hopes for mak- ing the state playoffs were crumbled as the Eagles battled to a 14 to 6 halftime lead and then held their lead in a battle of defenses in the second half for the victory. GREAT BEND 8 LARNED 7 The Indians' final game of the season was another disappointment, this time at the hands of Great Bend. An injury crippled Larned team marched for the first score early in the first quarter. The Indian's lead held until Great Bend broke through for a score in the second half. A two point conversion by Great Bend proved the deciding factor in the heartbreaking battle. The Indians thereby concluded the season with a respectable S win and-4 loss record. lbg , A iv fl! iz sw I in Q ' Ili' n - TW? 2 I qc lg- gg. 4 h , M I f E ' A J-E1 15 'ENC -I if . if ' A - 5' I lp -3, . The boys and coaches would naturally have liked to win all the games, but that would be quite a task in the tough W. C. K. L. The season began with 4 seniors, 8 juniors, and 9 sophomores on the team. The starting line-up for the opening game against Lyons was David Fleske and Chris Gilkison at guards, Dean Zook and Roger Slagle at forwards, and Phil Loomis at the post position. David, Chris, Dean, and Roger were seniors and had been starters the year before, but Phil was a 6'4 sophomore without any varsity experience. The game was a good battle and our Indians won by a 64 to 57 score to start the season off right. Phil proved he could play with the varsity by leading the scoring with 19 points. At the Chrisnnas break our record was 4 wins and 2 losses and by the middle of january after playing three tough league opponents our record going into the Mid-Winter Classic at St. john was 4 and 5. We were seeded fourth in the tournament pairings and were to open the tournament against St. john. Sterling, undefeated going into the tournament, was rated no. 1. Our boys knew that if they could win against St. john we would play Sterling in the semi-finals, and that is just the way it happened. We defeated St. john 57 to 51 with Roger Slagle scoring 24 points. The next night our Indians played an outstanding game against Sterling and won by a 54 to 41 score. Dean Zook held Sterling's high scorer to just nine points. This was Sterl.ing's first defeat of the season and our spirits were very high. This put us in the finals with Chaparral and a chance to bring the first place trophy home. After trailing Chaparral the first three quarters our boys came charging back in the fourth quarter and won the game by a 2 point margin 64 to 62. Roger Slagle and Phil Loomis each scored 19 points in this championship game. David Fleske and Chris Gilkison had outstanding games in the tourna- ment both offensively and defensively and Ralph Lowrey, Zook, Slagle, and Loomis were outstanding also. This was the first time Larned had won first in this 8 team tournament so school spirit was at a high level for the next few weeks. After the tournament and during the last half of the season, the Indians played some outstanding basketball games, winning all the home games except one but having trouble with our league opponents on the road. Our season record at the close of the regular season was 10 victories and 9 losses, all of our losses coming at the hands of our tough league mem- bers. Our team had not been defeated by any non- league opponents in regular season play. The Indians finished out the season at the Pratt Regional Tournament. The tournament had several good teams in it but our boys felt they had an excel- lent chance of winning. We were paired against Medicine Lodge in the opener and had to battle from behind to win in the final 3 seconds with a jump shot from the corner by Roger Slagle for a 45 to 43 vic- tory. In the semi-finals we played Kingman, the number one rated team of the tournament, and they proved to be just that as they defeated our Indians in a hard fought game 57 to 43. This defeat ended our chances of going to the State and we settled for fourth place in the tournament as Nickerson defeated us the next night for third place. This ended the Larned Indians basketball season with an overall record of 11 victories and 11 defeats. Highlights of the season were: First place in St. john Tournament, a near victory over the WCKL champs Hays, and outstanding victories against Russell and Garden City at the end of the season here at home. We had a great squad of boys and it was an entertaining and exciting season for all. In order to be eligible, a student must meet the standards of Leadership, Character, Scholarship, and Service for which the National Honor Society stands. Membership is indeed an honor, but it also carries with it a responsibility. Once a student is a member, he should not only show the qualities which brought about his selection, but also try to improve himself and the conditions around him. Club-2 Pep Club-2 Y-Teens-2 1' 14' The 1970 Prom, Land of the Rising Sun , was presented to the '70 Seniors on May 16, 1970 after many months of money making projects and a torturous week of hard, backbreaking work on de- corations. Chicken chow mein was the main course of the banquet. The guest speaker was Dr. Terry Keeley who spoke on the need for more and better communication in society. Entertainment for the Prom was provided by a rock group from Nebraska, called the 'Evolution'. Consisting of eight members, the 'Evolution' supplied an evening of memorable music to make Prom the crowning event of the year. . Q , Mr. McDonell Mrs. Meckfessel Mr. Snell BYE BYE BIRDIE BYE BYE BIRDIE is one of the most captivating musical shows of our time. It tells the story of a rock and roll singer who is about to be inducted into the army. The singer, Conrad Birdie, is a mod teenage idol. Albert Peterson, his agent, needs Rose Alvarez, Peterson's secretary, to keep them moving forward in the World. Rosie concocts the final publicity st:Lmt before Co1'u'ad's induction. He will bid a teenage girl goodbye with a kiss. Kim MacAfee, 15, in Sweet Apple, Ohio, wins the honor. Birdie becomes disgusted with life and sprints out of town with the teenagers. Rosie, still waiting for that band of gold from Albert after eight years, invades a Shriners' meeting. She then decides to become the Latin American Spitfire that Albert's mother believes she is. Kim and Hugo, Rose and Albert are all reunited. Above is the telephone scene in which the town of Sweet Apple is buzzing with the news that Kim has just been pinned by Hugo. 86 ii THE STARS X Albert Peterson- Ron Gore Mrs. MacAfee-Betsy Ritzrnan Rose Alvarez-Debby Phinney Mr. MacAfee- Steve Long Helen-Brenda Elmore Sad Girl-Vicki Hawk Nancy-Denise Snyder Sad Girl-Mindy Reese Alice- Kathie Vratil Mae Peterson-Lee Ann Stueckemann Margie Ann-Barbara Rankin Policeman- Kent Frick Penelope Ann-Marcia Stark Traveler-Cristi Chance Deborah-Becky Keast Conrad Birdie-Lonnie Snyder Suzie-Carol Nauert Guitar Man-Bruce Boyd Elizabeth- Kim Frick Trainman-Terry Fulton Karl-Jon Hansen Mayor- Steven W.
