Excitement began to build as students put finishing touches on floats in preparation for Friday's activities. Although brief showers turned toilet paper streamers soggy, the vveather was clear as the floats, all built to conform to the theme Rolling Stones, Rock into the Eighties , arrived. A pep assembly and the tradi- tional parade led up to the evening's game, in which Larkin defeated the Streamvvood Sabres 42-15. The dance on Saturday provided a fitting end to the vveelds activities. I , , ' . :. Directed by Mr. Wally Haskins, this two-act comedy, adapted from the book by Richard Hooker, gave the audience many memorable laughs. lt also, however, seriously presented a realistic view of life in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital unit during the Korean War. The play was highlighted by the hilarious antics ofthe Bonwit sis- ters, affording the audience an enjoyable evening. Holiday Celebrations On two occasions students joined in holiday celebrations. Serving as guides and supervising activities, they hosted the fourth annual Halloween party sponsored by the Advisory Board. For the first time, children paid an admission fee, which helped limit attendance to 1000 grade school students, Mem- bers ofthe choral department displayed a different type of holi- day spirit at their Christmas Concen. The concert choir, soph- omore girls choir, and madrigals presented a variety of music. The concert culminated with the traditional singing ofthe Hal- lelujah Chorus by present and past choir members. l , , Mbmsni 1.3 lnflation, which rose to 18 percent in early 1980, affected school life in several ways. The first change some students noticed was an increase in lunch prices in the cafeteria. All students felt the effects of another move caused by inflation when the large windows were boarded up to decrease heating costs. The event, however, with the greatest potential to change students' lives was the defeat of the referendum. Twice during the year, voters rejected a proposed tax increase for the school fund. Facing a large budget deficit, district officials had to de- cide which extracurricular programs to cut and when to insti- tute these changes. :.f ifif- 5 L 1 'f is sw- M M t' as ,4- A Was .., g msigi nf Y w 1 llll Sl' Ultima , 28 Budget Cuts w.,.....,..,.........M... ..,, . Hosted by the Advisory Board, it gave many fathers a special opportu- nity to spend a enjoyable evening with their daughters. Music of the big band era, played by the Charles Brinkley band, floated through the ballroom, adding a festive atmosphere to the occasion. 11UlIiUi SAYS... School Spirit 1 1'f fix .x .. . S G0 ROVIXLS Students often seem to lack school spirit. Pep assemblies become displays of apathy rather than exciting preludes to football or basketball contests, and attendance at games is low. When a team is winning, however, the attitudes begin to changeg everyone cheers the team on, hoping to continue a string of victories. This type of spirit was notably evident during the latter part of the football season and during regional com- petition in basketball. Students demonstrated the finest in school spirit: a pride in their school and its team. all 1 mnxqh., 33 it Tu rnabout Dance Slang Despite low attendance, Turnabout was again a success for the junior class. It was an enjoyable night, spent dancing to music played by the band Crash until late evening. WM' use On May 1, 2, and 3rd, 1980, the spring musical, Carousel, de- lighted and entertained very receptive audiences. The play was highlighted by the use of a real carousel donated by the Otto Rausches of Elgin. During the intermission young children were given rides which added to the overall festivity of the show. Excep- tional acting portrayals were executed by Alan Arps, Amy johnson, Dave Mullin, Karen Myers, Daryl Nitz, Dave Roome and Brenda Sparks. Vocally the cast was led by julie Steffen, Karen Myers and Amy johnson. The orchestra added to the depth and excellence of the performance which was vital for the complete success of the musical. .T Bmw 36 i P' x 5 gf, Carousel di L Ox! tx .K 1 ,, . That evening, some members of the class attended the senior dinner, a new event on the schedule. Seniors gathered with parents and friends at Baccalaureate on lune 1, when they viewed a slide presentation and listened to a speech by john Weberpal, a 1978 Larkin graduate. On june 6, as the concert band played the traditional Pomp and Circumstancef' seniors filed into Wing Park for the first outdoor commencement. Fred Didier and lodi lvlclxlutt spoke, and the members of the first class ofthe 1980's received their diplomas and bid Larkin farewell. -1-t. ' ,t,,, , X . . gf, is if? A state-placing football team set spirits high for Homecoming, for which the seniors chose The Rolling Stones. . . Rock Into The 198O's, as their theme. The seniorfloat, based on the song Sad Day, won best overall. The officers also added activities such as a bonfire, se- nior dinner, and an outdoor graduation to an already busy year. In addition, selling candy bars, senior T-shirts, and holding a car wash helped the officers to off-set costs of the activities. A A blood drive was also sponsored for the brave seniors wishing to donate. . , X, Will Green CLASS OFFICERS - S. Dunning, Sec., W. Green, Pres., 1. Rock, Treas. Missing: K. Prom was a major concern, so many money-making projects were neccessary. These included the sale of M8fM's, Christmas gift wrap, candy canes, bakery goods and a car wash. Ear- lier in the year they sold spirit but- tons and pompons at the football games. Royal jam I, a successful event, was also sponsored by the junior Class. The duel between the two bands, Matrix and Hos- tage, was well attended. Due to these many activities they were able to sponsor Turnabout in April and a memorable junior- Senior Prom in May. 72 A . ROYAL SMILE SQUAD - The PomPon squad this year was sponsored by Miss Nitz and Mrs. Rivera, The year was an exciting and rewarding one. They started by attending camps in summer and by receiving several ribbons and a third place trophy for originality in a routine. With the successful football season, the pompons also received the honor of putting on a halftime show all through semi-finals. With an extended basketball season, more pep assemblies were scheduled and the pompons were there to add their spirit. Fund raisers were selling candy, bells, stuffed animals, candles, jewelry and sponsoring a pompon clinic. The profits were used to purchase new uniforms and poms. Although the year never seemed to end, the pompons always did their best to please the crowds. l' itll ,,..4-f' , ll6 R3 'Q' aitftaiit' S 'lin is-Eg A A,.,.w..V,,, . The Royals carried an undefeated 9-0 regular season record into 5A playoff competition, where they eliminated both East Leyden and Moline. The season finally ended when Larkin lost to the East St. Louis Flyers, the eventual state champ- ions. Victories were not the only highlights of this superb season, however. A special visit from Channel 2 News set spirits high, and pep assemblies became real demonstra- tions of school pride. The team set many records, advanc- ing farther in the IHSA playoffs than any other Upstate Eight school and also achieving more wins in a single season than any football team in Larkinfs history. Next year's team will have to work hard to beat this year's final state ranking of fourth place. 120 , .ff , My ,... . Their desire for success was evident in the final game, in which they were victorious over a strong Elgin team, breaking the Maroons' un- defeated record and depriving them of sole possession of hte conference championship. Coach Schabert summed up the players' positive attitude by saying, The team played with a lot of heart, which made up for its lack of size. 123 CROSS COUNTRY - Front Row: M. Peterson, D. The outstanding seniors - julie Rock, Sue Sinnett, Wendy Collins, and Wendy Lange - all did an excellent job. They were joined by the best squad of freshmen ever. With the depth in this year's team, next season should also be an excellent one. 126 N Xfsf .lu-uhh-J WW Q Irv-..-aa... .'i AF tk r A lk, gin IZA? A A Front Row: D. Sherwood, R, Hall, B, Vence. BOYS SWIM TEAM TESTS THE WATER WITH NEW COACH - A seventh place finish in the district meet was not representative of the very dedicated athletes on the boys swim team. It was a good season considering that there was a coaching change in mid- Ianuary, and the state champs, St. Charles, swam the Upstate-8 conference. Steve Abbott placing third helped the team achieve a final fifth place ranking in the conference meet. With eight returning members, next year's team should have a solid base. T29 GIRLS GYMNASTICS TEAM SHOWS GOOD FORM - A first place in the Upstate-8 Conference was among the honors received bythe you ng, inexperienced team. Although there were no seniors, Heidi Schudel, a freshman, broke the school record for all-around and Conni Wagner, Tomasa Rodriguez, and Kim Marin helped to break a meet high with a score of 94.70. Coach Todd is looking forward to next year's season, stating that the team has a postitive attitude and challenges the competi- tion. GYMNASTICS - Coach Todd, C. Wagner, K. Kruskopf, K. Marin. I. Despite the help of seniors Karl Ciallagher, Tim McWilliams and juan Harris, the team ended the season with a O-11 record. The uncommon dedication exhibited by all members kept the team striving for a victory until the very last meet. Coach CJ'Brien cited togetherness, along with good defense and serving, as the reason for the team's success. CER LEAN As editors, we began work on this yearbook in August, 1979, when we attended a seminar in North Carolina. Since that time, vve'ye had many chalienges to face, in- cluding adjusting to a change of advisors as well as managing with a shortage of pictures. We hope this book provides an entertaining record of the school year. We wish the best of luck to next year's editors and hope they can continue Larkin's tradition of great yearbooks. It proves impossible to squeeze an adequate thank you to Mr. Larry Nemmers into one small block of copy. Simply put, he is a humanitarian in the strongest sense of the vvord. In everyday issues, as well as crucial problems, Mr. Nemmers gave guid- ance, support, and understanding in sacrificial amounts to the students of Larkin High school. We will miss him as he assumes a new position at that school across the river, knowing that it is Larkin High's loss and Elgin High's gain. - Will Green xx , 'yy mg- x KX f K R 5 .
