Largo Roundballers Face Tough Season VARSITY BASKETBALL As traditional at Largo, the Packers wei. handicapped by a lack of height in a hug. Pinellas County Conference. Under thi direction of Bill Schroeder, the Pack fough their way out of the cellar in an unusually strong conference full of experienceu teams. Two victories over rival Seminolr and one over Dixie Hollins accounted for the Packers' season wins. Other victories over Clearwater Catholic and Dunedin came in the Christmas and State tourna- ments. Senior Paul Campbell led all scorers for the Pack with a 14 point plus average per game. Iohn Campbell and Terry Whea- ton followed up in scoring with juniors Greg Cremeans and Marc Chatigny getting valuable experience for next year's squad. Gregg Anderson led in assists, while Paul Campbell hauled in the necessary rebounds. Doug Bremer and Spanky's Gang were loved by the home crowd for their razzle-dazzle brand of ballplaying. CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT For the first time in over a decade, the Packers advanced to the finals of a basketball tournament by defeating the host Clearwater Central Catholic Marau- ders 55-52 in double overtime. After receiving this early Christmas present, the Pack gave a gift to the Seminole Warhawks the following evening to the tune of a 60-53 defeat. The runner-up trophy was still a unique gift for the Largo five. Paul Campbell led the Packers in scoring for the two games with 42 points. I-Ie was followed by Iohn Campbell with 23, Ollie Troupe 16, Marc Chatigny 16, Gregg Anderson 8, Bob Friss 3, and Greg Cremeans 2. With Iohn Campbell and Ollie Troupe leading the way, Coach Schroder's boys dominated the boards in both contests. Paul Campbell gave the Pack an extra lift by converting on 16 of 16 from the free throw line for a tournament record. The '73 Packers had done something no Largo basketball team had done for a long time. They had earned a trophy for the runner-up position. 88!Vars1ty Basketball
