Haley 5 Comets Streak For State Title CROSS COUNTRY Fate once again kept Largo's cross country team from the state championship held at Lake Worth. The Packers dominated all PCC competition while also knocking off powerful squads outside of the county. Haley's Comets waltzed off with the PCC and district meets by substantial margins before journeying down to Lake Worth. Seniors Ieff Howdeshell and Don Waters led the Pack to most of the victories with Waters winning the PCC and placing second in the state meetg and Howdeshell dominating conference meets and taking the state championship. Ed Palmer was also a key figure for the Packers by placing high in area and state com- petition. George Weiser and lack Gary both helped the onslaught for Haley's Harriers by giving a 1002 effort. Sophomores Benny Smithers and Ion Win- ters rounded out the top seven. This year's domina- tion, accounted for by hard work and long hours of individual practice, should seem to continue with several returning lettermen for a long time. 't w':K.N 4, fan yn. Howdeshell-Waters Finish Top In State STATE MEET Despite a courageous effort by the Largo runners, the Pack fell short of the state championship for the second straight year. An underdog Winter Park squad won the meet in an upset with Haley's Comets following up close behind in the runner-up position. Ieff Howdeshell and Don Waters ended their high school career in cross country by 82!Cross Country ii 5 i 5 E v - i finishing an unprecedented first and second place. Palmer followed up in 28th in spite of the obstacles of ting spiked and running into a tree on the course. S01 more Ion Winters and George Weiser finished up in and 32nd positions respectively. Some freak occurai had once again kept Largo from the state title. The Pac had been robbed of a victory.
