BOCA CIEGA Largo's Mean Machine defense led the way as the Packers opened their season with a hard fought win at Boca Ciega, 9-7. The first points of the year were racked up when Rick Starr blocked a Bogie punt in their end zone for a two point safety. An ironic punting situ- ation won the game for the Pack as Mike DeMarco swooped up a bad snap and ram- bled 87 yards to the double white stripes. Don Henke, Tony Kiggins, and Ron Roberts spear- headed the defense. Steve Webb and Craig Cannon cracked the line for constant yardage. When the clock ticked out the Packers stood with victory in their grasp. They had defeated the reigning Pinellas County champions. PACKERS - 9 BOCIE - 7 NORTHEAST A full moon was the setting as the Packers took their second straight victory, edging Northeast, 14-13. Fullback Steve Webb used the extra moonlight to find holes for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Ronnie Roberts inter- cepted a pass and recovered a fumble to gain the honor of Defensive Player of the Week. The home crowd was given something to cheer about -their team was 2-0. PACKERS - 14 NORTHEAST - 1 RIVERVIEW Despite a strong showing in the first half, Largo fell to its first defeat'of the year in the hands of the Riverview Rams, by a score of 34-14. DIXIE HOLLINS After a 7-6 lead at halftime, the Pack fell to the Rebels of Dixie Hollins, 31-13. Bob Prescott ran 45 yards with a fumble and Terry Wheaton flipped a pass to Iim Minskey to round out the Packer scoring. Although Prescott and Don Henke were bright spots on defense, the Rebel offense ran wild over the Pack. PACKERS - 13 DIXIE HOLLINS - 31 LAKEWOOD The Packers got back on the winning track as they knocked off the Lakewood Spartans, 24-21.
