NATIONAL MERIT SEMI-FINALISTS National Merit Scholars Gain Recognition National Merit Semi-Finalists John McPhail and Mike Lanzing display their genius. ln order to become a semi-finalist forthe National Merit Scholarship, a student must take the designated test in his junior year and achieve a certain selected score. The semi- finalists are notified in September and are then required to take the College Boards. On the basis of these test scores, proven leadership, and citizenship, the semi-finalists are eligible for scholarships up to 36,000 Largo was proud to have two semi-finalists and four honorable mentions. National Merit honorable mentions go to Breck Swords, Ed Knudson, Dave Young, and Bev Roberts.

. , ' A Seniors Jerry Gertcher, Russ Wicker, John Langford, and Randy McKean were selected to attend Boy's State. Girl And Bog Staters Learn Of Florida Government This summer the American Legion sent delegates to the State Capitol to learn about its government. During the one week period officials were elected, mock government ses- sions were held, and tours of Tallahassee were made. The week ended with a talent show, banquet, and picnic. Jerry Gertcher repre-' sented lndian Rocks Beach and John Lang- ford, Russ Wicker, and Randy McKean were delegates from the Largo area. Mary LeDuc was selected to represent both Largo and Seminole high schools. Mary l.eDuc gives speech to the American Legion which qualified her for Girls' State.
