p2d'Z pldfy I have just returned from a fabulous reunuon wuth all my fruends from Largo Hugh School Graduatung Class of 1956 I was amazed to see what successful personages my former classmates had become and how much they had been able to contrubute to the world I really began to become excuted when the Largo Palladuum appeared before me, as that was wh re we were to meet JIII Anderson Harry Barber, Arlene Hudson and Russell Burnsude greeted me at the entrance and ushered me unto the magnufucent lobby whuch had been desugned and decorated by Janet Caussey world renowned desugner There I met John Futch Harvu Gruzzle and Harry Ankers They had just returned from a board meetung of the Unuted Natuons Agrucul tural and Ranchung Improvement Forum In Europ I approached the snack bar to refresh myself from my long trup I met Ronnue Gubbs Molly Jones Gene Mulls and Carole Ruchardson who were vaca tuonung from the harassung problems of teachung at the new spectacular Largo Unuversuty They Informed me that Coach Gubbs was doung a wonderful Job wuth the football team thus year and that another teacher Professor Ruchard Graham, had been added to the faculty I was also delughted to see Sondra Terman, Mary Bass, Donna Keener and Judy Osteen They told me that they were now Powell models They were plannung to guve a fashuon show for June Euser man's Punellas School of Modelung durung theur stay In Largo Donna and Mary were wearung chuc La As the program was about to begun, we fourd our seats and Iustened to Betty Holcomb, popular NBC recordung vocalust The applause had barely dued down before It rose agaun to greet Faye John son, stage actress and famous Furst Lady of the Theater Other renowned personages In the audu ence were asked to come forward by comeduan and guest master of ceremonues Dennus Velasco Cyn thua Rosende, authoress of best sellers saud a few words and told us about her newest book to b publushed soon lnternatuonal sport celebrutues also were presented and we recognuzed Barney McCall Pete Belanger Duckue Daugherty Ken DeVoI and Larry Faust who were members of the All Natuonal Baseball Team A dustunguushed delegatuon of the Romona Nuclear Atom Commussuon had just returned from an Important meetung and these scuentusts Martun Burd Paul Bush Davud McMullen, Larry Paquette Bob Permen ter, Duane Burket and Juanuta Keller gave us the latest reports on nuclear scuence and also stated theur opunuons concernung the new Inter Planetary Space Statuon The Largo Palladuum manager Damon Kennedy Introduced motuon pucture producer Albert Conover Force and statuoned at the Punellas Aur Force base Henry Meluch was an aeronautucal enguneer at the base whule Hollus Jack son was an avuatuon mechanuc at the Largo Inter natuonal Aurport Damon also told me that Clyde Whute was un the Navy and Joel Alchun In the lV'arunes Another fruend Mary Lee Korte was a pharmacust at the largest busuness center In the vuorld Punellas Shoppung Center June Wulluams, after studyung In New York for several years was also employed there as cosmetucuan Damon also mentuoned that John Schmudt was a reporter for the Sentunel Suddenly I heard my name called and turned to see Terry Spunk advancung toward me After greet Ing hum I asked hum what he was doung and he told me that he was a televusuon technucuan at the WLARGO TV statuon He found the work very unter estung and had met many promunent people through hus work, such as Sarah Neal, French horn player In the Unuted Countrues Orchestra, and artust Tom Noton Mr Noton had paunted the New York Revue at the artusts' show last wunter Terry also knew Davud Dawley trumpet playeu In Harry James' band and Largo's answer to Gene Kruppas drums, Davud Evans I wondered what had happened to Lous Bos worth Vurgunua Hull and Judy Porter Terry told me that they were now nurses at the Largo Health Center and Wanda Ruley was a lab technucuan at the Largo Munucupal Hosputal A complete new de partment for psychuatry treatment headed by Ann Marruott had been added to the hosputal In the last year On the way back to our seats J T Lyons and Irvun Meares jouned us and I could tell by theur unu forms that they were polucemen servung the Largo Cuty Poluce To begun the second part of the program Master of Ceremonues Dennus Introduced Hugh Ann Cason who sang for us some of the songs that she had used In her USO shows whule entertaunung troop, overseas Two other famed personalutues un our mudst were Mr Unuverse, Burten Allen and U S Olympuc fugure skatung star, Lavern Wulkerson Several of our old classmates were unable to come back to Largo for our reunuon as they were too far away These were Lloyd Larumore, who owned a thruvung wheat farm In Kansas Corene Guuluanu and Marue Howell who were servung as hotel hostesses In swank Hawauuan resorts and of course Unuted States Presudent Kenneth Kepler was unable t attend because of hus pressung dutues Kay Evans was tued up In her new Broadway show and could not leave rehearsals After the close of the program a number of us agreed to walk around the cuty and see the changes that had been made sunce we attended Largo Hugh School un 1956 One of the buggest addutuons was the Arthur Pausells Shoe Factory, Inc and of course Taylor s Cutrus Packung Plant under the management of Charles Kramer was stull operatung Yvonne Abramson Betty Baxter and emotzea are made of Mu Lufe un the clutches of educatuon began for nune tremulous youngsters un the tradutuonal red bruck buuldung called Largo Elementary School un 1943 Kundergarten was a new and excutung experuence for Burten Allen, James Bates Davud Evans and Lavern Forehand Floppung on the rugs provuded for early afternoon naps hughlughts the memorues of all Ron nue Gubbs Betty Holcomb Faye Johnson Judy Os teen and June Wulluams also found the competutuon very stuff for pruzes awarded to those beung the best behaved as there was always somethung goung on that caused laughter Luttle paper vullages and splattery paunts occupued our tame un furst grade when Jull Anderson, Harry Barber, Mary Bass, Phullup Bassett, Donald Forehand, Nancy Forehand Arlene Hudson Barney McCall Lullue McCall Judy Meares Ralph Shepard Petc S suons, and Tommy Tarbox jouned the class Second grade found the old tumers as well as Wallace Hood and Hollus Jackson brungung theur pen mes to school every mornung for Savung Stamps How well the taste of those gooey thungs us remem bered' Dollars and cents entered our Iuves and so dud Jeanette Henderson and G ne Mulls un the th d grade A profound contrubutuon to our educatuon was the realuzatuon that ut dudn t matter how many zeros one put on the rught sude of the decumal' ' We were really growung up too, as we developed the delucate art of breakung unto the lunch Iune whule we marched Our teachers un the fourth grade funally succeeded un gettung us to tell tume, and after that laboruous task we relaxed on the newly acqulred Jungle Jums Our educatuon had now acqulred the new dumensuon of homework, whuch we vaunly hoped would soon dusappear But Huntung Easter eggs and partyung on other holu days sungung the Orange Blossom Song' every mornung spendung half of recess wautung un lune for 3 swung holdung gang wars wuth moss all ove the playground fall the tume eludung the ever pur su ng Pluto J these are the antucs un whuch Joel Alchun John Futch Juanuta Keller J T Lyons Ann Marruott Sarah Neal and Sonny Youngblood Jouned us un the fufth grade The long cherushed dream of fulung out last to mornung flag salute wuth everyone else watchung was fulfulled un grade sux Now we were best un dodge ball baseball and every other sport We were the most umportant un the school band we were the stars of the May Festuval we were the best plaf makers anyone could want we were the prettuest gurls and the handsomest boys un the school Our ranks durung thus gloruous year were reunforced by Albert Conover and Wanda Ruley and we all solemnly were graduated together Seventh grade made us feel as uf we were startung at the bottom of the ladder all over agaun Damon ennedy Davud McMullen Irvun Meares Lous Bo worth Joan Gauthuer Bob Permenter and Dennus Velasco came to support our cause whule we wand ered bewulderedly up and down staurs and hall We became furm exponents of the theory teachers should move from class to class, not us' The next year found us more at ease un our new surroundungs and Duck e Daugherty, Wayne Enfung er Larry Paquette Judy Porter and Terry Spunk came unto our mudst to make the goung easuer Long treks to the Town Audutoruum and magazune sales pooped us out un our Freshman year Harry Ankers Paul Bush Davud Dawley Robert Ensch Larry Faust Corene Guuluanu, Mary Lee Korte Charles Kramer Lloyd Larumore Tom Noton Cyn thua Rosende John Schmudt Lous Tuft and Russell Burnsude arruved upon the scene un tume to go wuth us on manv pucnucs at Hullsborough Park As Sopohmores we bade goodbye to Doc and welcomed H B as well as Donna Keener Hugh Ann Cason Pete Belanger, Kay Evans Harvus Gruzzle Duane Hardwuck Edmond Harwood Irene Hawkuns Vurgunua Hull Mollv Jones Kenneth Kepler Pat Kleun, Henry Meluch Sandra Summers Larry Tupton Clyde Whute and Lavern Wulkerson The hutherto unexplored world of a frogs unternal organ usms was revealed to us un Buology so that we were unable to enjoy the luxurues of Bug Bears Store Junuor class responsubulutues enveloped us and Harvard Marue Howell Bruce Johnson LaVonne Johnson Judy Krueg Carole Ruchardson lrus Rosen feld and Dave Wotawa un a maze of confusuon We had a ball wuth the class play and slaved over the paper and annual under close supervusuon We were now entrusted wuth offuces un many clubs and stat conventuons gave us a new experuence The Pron and Pucnuc clumaxed our year wuth many peopl sayung that our dance was the best ever' Senuors ' Can ut be true, can we be the ones upon the lofty perch? Yvonne Abramson Martun Burd Janet Caussey Ken DeVol and June Euserman helped us 'lord ut over the rest of L H S but we dudnt feel so hugh and mughty durung Placement Exams and the hundreds of other exams that we had to take Presudent Pete Belanger had a hard tume wuth us durung the turmouls of orderung unvutatuons and cards class guft and gown futtungs More Than Meets the Eye was a wallopung success and Ruchard Graham Sondra Terman Ruchard Shere and Duane Burket were there to enjoy ut wuth us The concludung months of our school careers seemed to Jet not fly out of our Iuves as the many end of year actuvutues were held un our honor Messrs Futzgerald and Clark and Mesdames Evans and Gardner stuck by us untul June when the valued duplomas funally became our own We had scoffed at our own sentuments many tumes but evervone of us meant ut when we saud a part of every heart wull lunger here and we wull not forget though we be far far away Thulu lhnt u o . . . . aulrzli As we walked through town we met many old friends that had not been able to come to the reunion because of their businesses. In the Lanay Harvard Cadillac. Buick Agency and Garage we met mechanic Wayne Enfinger and General Motors designer Ed- mond Harwood. Pete Sessions also worked for Gen- eral Motors in the testing field. The newest in Iris Rosenfeld and LaVonne Johnson clothing stores was being built on the next corner in a very fashionable part of the business section of town. I noticed on thc sign standing in front of the construction that Sonny Youngblood was the contractor and that Lar ry Tipton was the realtor At the Peter Fox and Donald Forehand Law Firm Pat Klein Judy Meares Sandra Sumners and Lois Tift were employed as stenographers We stopped and chatted with these friends for a few minutes then moved on to our next stop as it was growing late This stop was Robert Enschs Super Market As we talked to Robert we saw Arlene Emery Diane Hardwick and Joan Gauthier. who were doing their weekly marketing. Both were now married and were proud possessors of lovely families. They told uf: about two more of our former classmates. Jeanette Henderson and Lillie McCall had become beauticians and together ran a training school in Los Angeles. California. Judy Krieg was an important jeweler at Saks in New York City.
