Camp Crawford two years later renamed Fort McIntoshD is established to protect Laredoans. The signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo confirms U. S. possession of land north of the Rio Grande. Laredoans pledge loyalty to the Confederacy. Laredois soldiers do not lay down their arms until several months following Lee's surrender in 1865. Railroads from Corpus Christi and San Antonio reach Laredo. The Laredo Times begins publi- cation. The Guaraches and the Botas battle after an election. The first international bridge Ca footbridgeD connects the two Laredos. The electric railway built here is the first west of the Mississippi. Laredo gets its start as the world's onion capital. Drilling for water, ranchers find natural gas. Oil later is found in Webb County and adjacent 3I'68.S . The 23rd Customs Collection District makes Laredo its headquarters. The Gateway to Mexi- con becomes the most important U. S. land port. . A Construction begins on Laredo Air Force Base. The base reactivates in 1952. Laredo Junior College starts classes. The Rio Grande goes on its most destructive rampage. Laredo grows to a population of 61,000.
