The meeting will come to order. The regular meeting of the Student Council was called to order by the President, Corky Schilt. Roll call was taken and the minutes were read and approved. This is how the Laramie High Student Council opens its meetings, and how the Secretary, Anita Knadlcr begins her report of the minutes of one of the most essential functions of our students. At all times the students ore invited to sit in on these meetings that determine the activities of our organization and classes, and draw their own con- clusions on the ever-increasing efforts of our Stu- dent Council. This year more than ever has been done for our benefit by the members. Several fund drives have been run for the warming hut, the United Fund and others. Citizenship projects were discussed and usually passed for the Senior High School classes and other projects for active organizations. During the early part of December the Student Council members and guests trekked up to Corbett's cabin for their annual party. It was a rare reward after the work of the first semester. After school started again, if was back to work, and many things were accomplished including the married-student regulations, the date for the '59 follies was set and preparations begun for the event. Something else really new this year is the Hi-Fi for the school, available for the use of classes and organizations. To the Student Council: Congratulations for a successful year and a job well done, and thank you for your service to us, the stu- dents of I. H. Susan Flippin and Judy Tatham were co-chairmen of the feast given by second-year Latin Classes with first-year Latin students as slaves. Held in the activity room Saturday evening, February 7, the theme was that of a victory banauct presided over by the Emperor and Empress (David Smith and Melodic Irvine) to celebrate recent conquests in Gaul! Committee chairmen were Zora Juraco, food; Anabel Malmquist, programs; Roger Dodds, enter- tainment; Karen Cook, decoration; Patty Jo Wise- man, invitations; Beth Stoncman, clean up. lela Bindschadlcr, Mary Whitcomb, and Sharon Ross, former Latin students, assisted in the kitchen. Entertainment consisted of a welcome speech by David Smith: a wrcstlinq bout between Bruce An- drews and Eric Hanson, Eugene Miller and Ikey Scott; and a play whose cast of characters included Pat Devancy, Rollin Denniston, John Hanks, James Holmstrand, Albert McPhcc, Mike Bott, Lewis Pclton, Sammy Fratto. Kathryn Johnson, Shirley Wick, and Kenneth Stcbner. 14 German students in authentic costumes enjoyed a dinner of pig's knuckles and sauerkraut at the first annual Christmas banquet. Father Christmas distributed gifts to everyone making the evening especially festive. German Banquet French Banquet Onion soup, leg of lamb, real French fried potatoes and lots of other good things to eat formed the basis of this French banquet. A good-sized Eiffel Tower and French costumes gave this the atmosphere of a sidewalk cafe in Paris. s e Junior • i o r Banquet 19 5 9 Look the fellas made it. How- ever. due to poor weather they were not able to go to all the out-of-town basketball games or wrestling matches. They did, of course, attend all the home games and matches. They were invited to the Annual Athletic Banquet in November. The girls were also interviewed on the radio. They all went to the District Basketball Tournament in Torrington and the State Basketball and Wrestling Tournaments in Laramie. They led cheers at all pep assemblies, parades and the Homecoming Snake Dance. The vocal music department started out the year short on numbers and with a new director. An early move to try to increase student participation was the organization of an after-school Girls' Chorus. This group made its first public appearance with the Girls' Choir at our Education Week Open House on Nov. 13. The Mixed Chorus sang for the Elk's Memorial Service on Dec. 7. The Girls' Choir sang for each of the Laramie service clubs when they met in our Activity Room. The high spot for our year was our spring concert and participation in the spring festival at Wheatland. Our ensembles and soloists appeared at numerous school and community functions. We hope that our efforts have helped to make this school year more pleasant for all of us through music. The float for the Homecom- ing Parade was a pallet throne with attrac- tive brushes and a green-color theme. As money-making projects the Art Club has made posters for the Ski Lodge and door posters for the Annual Jamboree. The club also had a popcorn ball sale. Of added interest to the members were several visits to art exhibits at the Univer- sity of Wyoming. Future plans of the club are to construct a constitution and have a banquet as an at- traction to new members. We started off the year with our plans for Homecoming, electing Sylvia Field as our Homecoming Queen Candi- date. Our float's theme was Queen Around the World with Sylvia reigning over all. We attended a meeting at the American Legion Home where we were guests of honor. Miss Helen Lancaster, a senior in Nursing at the University of Wyoming, spoke to us on scholarships, nursing as a career, and the various subjects necessary to fake. We also had a candy sale which helped our treasury. Next we had a joint meet- ing with Prep's Future Nurses' group. We initiated the new members of our club with a come-as-you-are breakfast in December. We are now working on a point system. Some of our junior and senior members are planning a trip to Denver to visit the St. Luke's private hospital when they are having open-house. Some of our members worked at the polio clinic. Our future plans include ordering and receiving our pins, having a party honoring the senior members, see- ing films on This Is Nursing, sponsored by the District Nurses' Association, and hearing various speakers in all types of fields. We will have election of officers in April, and this will officially close our 1958-59 activities. Football co-captains Sandy Colling and Terry Hearne of the state champion Plainsmen football team presented Deti with an honor plaque from the entire 1958 football team. Gold plates on the plaque spelled the reason for this presentation. On one side were the years Deti had led Laramie to an outright state AA championship on a tie for the football title—in eleven years. Deti has been football king in 1950, 1951, 1954, 1955, 1956, and 1958. Only three state championship tie years—1951, 1954, and 1958—are included in this string of triumphs. The other side of the plaque posted the years Deti has been selected Coach of the Year-1950, 1954, 1956, and 1958. This day we could put far into the future so we might go back and undo all the mistakes we have made — to make more of the time that goes much too fast to hold even a bit of it — to slow down and enjoy the things that are so little and yet mean so much. Yes, as we see it all glide past us — football, basket- ball, initiations, homecomings, tournaments, banquets, and proms, we feel ourselves ache inside with a quiet sadness as we watch it slipping by in the breath of a moment. But we know that life, good times, and God's blessings can come and will come forever — yet never again will there ever be anything quite so wonderful as our memorable high school days and our class of 1959. 71 President Vice-President Keith Lantz Senator Fear FBIA 3, 4; NFL 3, 4; Student Court Prosecuting Attorney; Boys State; Speech Festive! 3; Class President 4. We plan to wash all first-floor windows, clean courts in the buildings, and, if possible, wash all school buses. We plan to have a swimming party and to donate a hi-fi to the school. It is hoped that the freshmen will surely have memories of their Freshman year in LARAMIE HIGH! THE SENIOR CLASS By Carolyn Dotson and Sharon Graham Prophecy -1959 After being away from Laramie for a year or so, wc became very curious to know what was going on in the big city. As wc cruised down 3rd Street and onto Grand Avenue, we found every- thing about the same, except for a few minor changes. Much to our surpriso, however, when we looked down 7th Street to get a glimpse of our old school, we discovered that its appearance had changed somewhat. Our curiosity getting the better of us, wc quickly turned down 8th Street to sec what had happened to the old Alma Mater. Upon reaching the north door, wc saw that the outside had not changed, except that the windows now had bars on them. Investigating further, we noticed the inscription The Gem City Jail, founded May 22, 1959 above the door. Since this was quite a shock to us, we decided to look the new situation over. The warden, Keith Lantz. met us at the main door and. in order to get in, we had to go through a thorough investigation given to us by F. B. I. agent. Bob Rodriquez. After he found out who we were, he called on a couple of the guards to show us around. One of the guards, Locky Burns, said that this was the closest he could come to being a football guard, when we asked him what he was doing here. The second guard, Sylvia Field, was training for her Secret Service examination, while working at the prison. As we advanced further down the hall, we found Kent Boswell serving a term for being a quack doctor. In the same cell wc saw Martie Morgan, still trying to impersonate Kise Krueger. Elden Almendarez has always had a liking for pretty girls and it has finally paid off. Wc found him in cell Number 1959- 19 with the charge of bigamy on him. Along with Elden. the following people arc now serving their terms of bigamy, 15 years: Bruce Dinsmore. Jackie Greaser, Janice Wentz. Terry Bur- gess, Adelina Vialpando, Betty Ann Stanfield, Pat Adamson. Judy Hansen, and Barbara Fredricks. Further on, we see a little dark figure in a cell whom we finally recognize as Valera Wetherell, whose previous position as a journalist got her into prison on a charge of libel. In the same cell with Valera, we see that surprisingly enough, Evelyn Ball is serving sentence for the charge of slander in her new book Gem City Jail. In the prison's beauty salon, which is better known as Pain- tin's Place, we find confined to their cells the following for failing to operate with a beautician's license: Wilma Paintin, Charlotte Hayden. Jeannie Snyder. Leilani Marie Metzler. Beverly Lowry, Agnes LaVerne Johnson, Lorraine Wolcott, and Linda Kay Stone and the boys' barber, Ed Moree. As we go further down the hall we see the following people serving their terms in one of the many padded sells for severe and exaggerated sense of inadequacy: Terry Hearne, Wayne Rote, Dennis Shingleton. and Gordon Dudley. In the next pink-cushion, walled cell we find Jeannie Bur- rowes, strapped to the wall because she insisted on running up and down Grand Avenue in her polka-dot bikini. Next we find Cynthia Knight, better known in South America as the Bomb, serving life sentence for inciting riots. Some of her gang mem- bers also jailed are: Anita Knadler. the politician of the group, Linda Tadlock, charge of artillery (cream pies). Bud Haskins, hide- out bouncer, and his assistant. Junior Hidalgo. We also are very shocked to see the following people sen- tenced for robbery: Sandy Johnson, Max Atwell, Alice Hendrick- son, Joan Allen Wood, Sylvia Cortez, Bill Pharoah. Janice Lutz, Pat Talbott, and Jim Wagner. It seems that they got TOO anxious to become rich. Further down the hall. Merle Paules has set up housekeeping in cell 1959-29. He is in for making defamatory remarks about the famous Hula-Hoop champion, Sandra K. Johnston, on his radio program. She won the title from Gilbert Bush this year. Two transfers from Torrington, Mike Davidson, and Dick Shoemaker, are now serving their terms in our Gem City Jail on charge of grand larceny. Above all people wc see Bill Ginther, who we thought was making a career for himself playing professional baseball, serving a term for carrying a gun in town. 131 We also see in the cells serving under general principles: Anne Gilroy. Irene Gonzales, Tony Scarpelli, Josephine Sanchez, Phillis Wolfe Caudillo, Genevieve Sandoval. Annette Sawyer. Pat Gibbs. Howard French, and Linda Lunberg, John Dinccn, George House and Alan Lucas. We find the following people, who at least tried to finish college, serving their sentences for taking part in the panty raids on nearby nurseries: Kay Quinlivan, Alice Ellsbury, Barbara Dun- can. Chuck Poston, James Patrick Ellis, Harry Nonage, and Lyle E. Michael. We see Robert Nelson enjoying his stay on a charge of menacing the highways with his exceedingly slow rate of speed. Mr. Larry Noilson, Principal of D.H.S. was given a dishonor- able discharge and was given sentence for not belonging to A.A.A. (American Automobile Association?). Sitting out their terms, Don Nihart, Ted Shawver, and Ed Wylam seemed to have been charged for impersonating naval officers. Here in a decorated cell, we find Deanna Dolan filling out her term for stealing the script for Scarlet O'Hara. Also, we see Clarice Merrit, serving her sentence for abscond- ing with the company's funds from Oren McFadden Productions Incorporated. As the week went by, Saturday finally came. We were shocked to find out that the jail birds were given Saturday night entertainment by the rock'n'roll band under William Malloy and his band members who are: Sandy Colling, violin; J. R. Gaddis, piano; and singer Sue Hilston. The National Dairy Association placed Virgie Copeland, Linda Hansen, Richard Tyler, Mary Bushey, and Fred Hansen in prison on charges of running a green cheese factory on the moon with- out a proper license. All the way through the cells we have noticed that the prisoners' uniforms are extremely well-designed, and as we step into the next chamber, busily sewing away are the dress de- signers: Della Borgeman, Cathy Kildow, and Charlotte Smallwood, and modeling their uniforms are Marilyn Coleman and Barbara Boyd. Suddenly we are startled by the piercing voice of Sonny Maley, yelling This is unfair, I am innocent, I didn't write that obnoxious letter to president nominee, Larry Collins. Going over to talk to Sonny, we discovered that Corky Shilt had taken his case over, but as yet has gained no evidence of innocence because Charlie Folstcr, Prosecuting Attorney, has circumstantial evidence to prove Sonny guilty. While we were visiting with Sonny, he told us that David Aim, a ring leader of a Custom Shop, has been convicted along with his gang consisting of Ed Dcaringcr, Rosie Vigil, Danny Lewis, and Penn Wong, for stealing cars and then customizing them and reselling them at a tremendous price. After finishing our long talk with Sonny, we walked down the hall and to our astonishment, we saw Dan Boylan still prac- ticing his football block in his padded cell with his coach, con- vict Al Caudillo. Soon after we passed Don and Al's cell, we ran into Richard Burnside, Marjory Ryan, Filomena Garcia, Donna Anton, Angela Teel, Myrna Tippets, Camilla Boyer, Laurel Brasher, Marilyn Buckles, Janice Rowe, Ramona Hunt, and Kay Kraus in separate cells still pleading not guilty to their charges of being stowaways and failing to produce passports on their various trips to such places as Rome, Alaska. Ireland, Scotland, and all points in Eur- ope. These people being quite radical, we hurriedly rushed up the steps to second floor. Here we see David Corthell in cell No. 1959-59, serving out a three-year term for failing to accom- modate the American Agriculture Association with his designated amount of produce. Immediately after seeing those people, we talked to Dennis Estes, a basketball player, who has been charged for throwing a game. We see in the next padded cell, Pat Hopkins sitting there being quite witty, evidently being sentenced for being a little TOO witty and out of order. Right next to Pat's cell, Sharon Loban is practicing her fenc- ing lessons which previously got her into a bad jam. She said she forgot and used a real sword at practice instead of a rubber- tipped one, and she just couldn't understand it, for some reason. Something that seemed quite maddening on Harry Surline's part was the fact that after living on the beach for so long, he was picked up for stealing what he thought were rather inex- pensive items that helped furnish his house from a nearby ship that had just docked. Finally wo see Fred Waters fussing over his old clothes that he had worn for a long time and said that he had become a bum instead of going to college, but was rather surprised for getting arrested for stealing a few cans of food from a food market. After all. a guy has to eat sometime. We see that Gordon Holladay's height got the best of him as he was serving a sentence for destroying every door sill he encountered by not ducking as he went through them. Next to Gordon's cell we see Richard Ludwig sleeping heavily on his bed. Gordon told us that his sleeping went a little too far because he was always a menace to the skiers on the ski tow. Virginia Johnson had been carried away by using cream which had removed all her skin. Some of our well-known artists who have finally been caught imitating paintings and reselling them for a bigger profit are: Jan Schoeder, Phyllis Walton, and Caleen Schmidt. Soon after we saw the artists we heard two familiar voices singing away at the top of their lungs. Barbara and Sherry Smith, it seems, now members of high society, were thrown in for disturbing the peace. As yet they haven't simmered down. Next to their cells we see Judith Kuhn and her husband, Doctor Jeykle serving their sentence for smuggling. It seems that Connie Bullock has been arrested for being an alien in this country. While tracing her ancestry, she discovered that she was not legally a U. S. citizen. Now as we near the exit of the famed Gem City Jail, we find that all the rest of the cells are empty, but seem to have been made ready for the missing few. Yes. on each door was a poster: Wanted dead or alive. then the list of names in the warden's office: Merle Powell, Victor Ybarra, Phyllis Richards, and a picture of Phyllis as she was last seen the night she dis- appeared in her Ice Follies costume; Dorothy Winched, Esther Roybal, Don Tupper, John Stephenson, Cliff Snow, Steve Rod- riguez, Ed Bergstrom, Gary Brown, Alberta Santillanez, Melvin Almendares, Howard Cadwell, Gary Kilgore, Cecil Lewis, Dixie Helm, Gary Moats. Irvin Mortenson, Karl Nordmann, Robert Parker, Gerald Peterson, and Nancy Weibcl. Now, sadly, we leave the building with the help of Don Ruskanen, the jail's trusty and door keeper, because he couldn't possibly stand the thought of leaving, and . . . What's this? Why, I'll be . . . It's John Hcnbcrg, sitting on the steps, head in hand. Too bad, John. It seems he just can't get in, even though he's tried everything he can think of. Oh well, not everyone can get into the Gem City Jail. Tough luck kid. But after all, you are a member of the Class of 1959. What more could you possibly ask for?
