English Teaches Unity in C0mm1,mical1'0rz English--Training the Lapel students to be fluent in public speaking and de- bating, adept in creative and technical writing, and comprehensive in the field of literature are the goals of the English Department. Students develop self- confidence and a Way to express them- selves vocally through practice in de- bating and public speaking. In composition classes, they are en- couraged to use original ideas and or- ganize them into comprehensive essays and themes. The students turn their in- terest toward the classic Works of great English as Well as American Writers and poets in literature classes. All of these various phases of English are taught to help our students develop a well-rounded curriculum . o4.,...,...,..: Languages Leaa' to a Better Understandzng ofthe Worla' Language - -The language department now offers three foreign languages: Spanish, Latin, and French. Although only two years of each language are of- fered at the present time, plans are be- ing made to offer a more advanced study in the near future. The Spanish class is using a new textbook this year. A tape recorder is also a great help to the class as they hear the taped voice of a speaker whose na- tive tongue is Spanish. The recorder aids in exercise drills and keeps the Spanish class ever advancing. Although Latin is not a spoken lan- guage, it plays a vital part in the de- velopment of a large and useful vocab- ulary. It aids the student because many English words are direct Latin deriva- tives. Legal terms, medical terms, and even our most advanced space terms are proof that Latin lives to- day . The French class also has a new textbook this year. To learn correct pronunciation, the French students lis- ten to tapes which supplement the new book. The class also uses French mag- azines to acquaint them with the modern France of today. Maths and Sciences Stimulate Young Minds at L.H.S. Science--The study of the ever- advancing World of science begins with the study of man and his environment in a Freshman biology course. Biology students dissect animals, collect and catalogue leaves and flowers, and ex- amine living organisms. This study is also a preliminary course to more specialized sciences. Accurate formu- las, the proper use of chemicals and correct lab procedures are a few of the skills learned from the Chemistry course. Math--The Mathematics department prepares many students for advanced work on college level and instructs others in fundamentals and principles useful in everyday life. First and sec- ond years Algebra, Geometry, and Sen- ior Advanced Math provide occasion for exploring into this fundamental science. i 76 o Q S0e1'a!SIaa'1'es Teach H erilage ana' Una'erslana'1'ng Developing and instilling in its students an interest in the past, present, and future is the task of the Lapel Social Studies Department. This course is offered in all four high school years, the first two being spent learning general drafting practices, the third year learning ma- chine drawing, and the fourth in study- ing architectural drawing. Three years of Shop courses are of- fered at Lapel: Wood Shop 10, Metal Shop ll, and Advance Shop for Seniors. These courses plus others go together to make the fine Industrial Art program at Lapel. Music--The Music Department tries to develop in the students and interest in and appreciation for all fields of music. In music class, the students learn the rudiments of music. Another phase of this class is to acquaint the students with classic composers and their Works. Through participation in Concert Band, Marching Band, Concert Choir, and Girl's Choir, the students not only de- velop their individual talents, but they also learn the importance of working to- gether and the necessity of cooperation. All of these classes contribute to the advancement of students by cultivating interests and abilities that might other- Wise go unnoticed. I lv W.,-him Commercial and Home Economics Balance the Curriculum Home Economics--The Home Economics classes offered at Lapel are a great aid to those girls who are interested in a Home Ec- onomics or Nursing career. Such topics as food preparation, child care and development, family buying, personality development, home nursing, consumer buying, home management, and food preservation pro- vide useful information to any of the girls en- rolled in this three year course. Activities include a trip to the Indianapolis Home Show, Kroger Distribution Center, and preparation of a Christmas banquet given to the faculty. Commercial--Lapel High School offers many courses for the business minded stu- dents. The Secretarial Training course helps the students to review their knowledge of typ- ing and shorthand. This course acquaints the students with new machinery and office skills . A General Business course acquaints the stu- dents with the general practices of the busi- ness-world.
