Junior Play—Hillbilly Weddin The backwoods country of Kentucky provided a colorful setting for the con¬ fused courtship of Ceelie Belsnickle. Because of Ceelie ' s unattractiveness the local Coys were unwilling to marry her, and she was rapidly approaching the terrible condition of spinsterhood. Mass confusion and a sh otgun weddin’ were the hilarious results when the eligible bachelor, Dr. Ronald Maxwell, appeared in the Belsnickle home. The title referred to a rather hectic Senior girls ' ■slumber party, at Rita Baxter ' s home, to which no boys were to be admitted. However, the party was plagued from the start by constant interruptions from boyfriends, former boyfriends, and even the police . The final result of this unusual pajama party was the capture of a criminal, the reconciliation of two injured lovers, and an electrified congo line, all amid mass confusion and hys¬ teria. The Cole Porter Room of the Sheraton-Lincoln Hotel, with its glittering chandeliers and pale blue lighting, was an impressive setting for the theme In the Misty Moon¬ light . The mellow tones of the Star- lighters ' Band, Theme from a Summer Place by a junior girls ' quartet, and a vocal solo by Becky Stout, On a Clear Day , carried out the theme in entertain¬ ment. The evening was highlighted by the crowning of King and Queen, Jim Prather and Mary Wainscott, and the selection of their attendants, who reigned over the remainder of the gala event. Between the A and B team ball games, a hush went through the crowd as the queen candi¬ dates appeared in glittering formal attire. The participation of the high school band under the direction of Mr. Herchel McKamey, and the nar¬ ration of the events by Vaughn Bracken, a member of the Senior class, enhanced the excitement pro¬ ceeding the crowning of the 1967-68 Homecoming Queen. Senior Candidate Becky Sharpe was crowned by last year ' s queen, Mickey Kaiser who was escorted by the vice-president of the Student Council, Phil O ' Connor. Becky ' s court included two Senior attendants, Rosalie Shaul, and Karla Fulton; the Junior attendant, Cindy Huffman; Sophomore attendant, Debby Wise; and the Fresh¬ man attendant, Jodi Castor. The parade of floats was presented at the half of the varsity game. The floats were designed and constructed by the junior high and high school classes and F.F.A. to be judged by a panel of four judges: Miss Terhune, Mrs. Herron, Mr. Rhodes, and Mr. Adams. The Freshmen won first place with a clever representation of the theme: Keep LHS Clean. Although the Lapel varsity team was defeated in their Homecoming game by the Frankton Eagles, the 1967-68 Lapel Homecoming will be pleasantly remembered by all those who attended. The boys display their talents in a sport they find enjoyable, all the while learning the art of working together for a common goal. The individual sportsmanship, taught by team participation teaches the boys a basic and lasting discipline in fundamental hu¬ man relations. As a member of the-Indiana High School Athletic Association, Lapel High School participates in inter¬ school games and contests in baseball, track, basket¬ ball, cross country, and golf. The I.H.S.A.A. has rigid rules governing the selec¬ tion of team members. The team member must keep a good scholastic standing. He must have - and be main¬ taining for the current semester, passing grades in each of three full-time, full-credit courses in the preceding semester. He must also be certified physically fit by a licensed physician. Many other rules are imposed to in¬ sure the high standards of the athletic program. Those who are selected as team members have both a high distinction and a great obligation to conduct themselves so as to be a credit to their team and to their school. Karen Thole Anderson College, B.A. Phys. Ed., Health. Dallas Hunter Ball State U., M.A. Phys. Ed., Health, Science. Paul F. Arthur Anderson College, B.S., Ball State U., M.A. French, English. Language--The language department offers a selection of three foreign languages; French, Latin, and Spanish. Although only two years of each language are offered at the present time, plans are being made to offer more advanced study in the near future. The French lab consists of several French records that aid the students in developing proper pronuncia¬ tion of the French language, along with magazines and papers written in French. This French literature enables the French class to become acquainted with the French people and with modern France. Although Latin is not a spoken language, it is a vital part in the development of a large and useful vocabulary. It aids the student because many Eng¬ lish words are direct Latin derivatives. Legal terms, medical terms, and even our most advanced space terms are proof that Latin is still a living lang¬ uage. A tape recorder with separate earphones for each student enables the Spanish students to imitate a speaker whose native tongue is Spanish. The re¬ corder aids in exericse drills and keeps the Spanish class ever advancing in their language skills. Phys. Ed.--Physical education plays a very im¬ portant role in the daily school curriculum. By pro¬ viding an opportunity for vigorous physical activity, it contributes to the general health and fitness of the students. It assists the individual students in learning to work with their peers through organized team effort. It encourages good sportsmanship through friendly competition and teaches the students how to lose as well as how to win. Physical education classes are among the required courses for all students in grades 7 through 10. Among the activities of the boys classes are basketball, soft- ball, gymnastics, track, volleyball, soccer, hiking, and calisthenics. The girls classes take part in various modifications of these activities and sports plus several others including group games and folk dancing. 70 Irma Wells Ball State U. Guidance--One of the most important and necessary departments in the school is the Guidance Department, under the direction of Mr. Trisler and Mrs. Huntzinger. Its duties include supervising all intelligence and achievement tests given and keeping a record of each student ' s scores and grades. It also assists the upper¬ classmen with their plans for the future by furnishing in¬ formation about college choices and job opportunities. In this way, the Guidance Department provides invalu¬ able service to each student in the school. LIBRARY--One of the most useful and important departments in the high school is the library. It boasts a wide selection of both fiction and nonfiction books, reference books of all kinds, and current periodicals. These resources are at the disposal of any student who wishes to make use of them. Under the guidance and supervision of the librarian and her assistants, students are encouraged to use the books freely. The library department works closely with the other academic departments to aid the students in supplementing their regular study with outside resources. The library is also used by many students as a place to pursue their many courses of study. AUDIO-VISUAL--The Audio-Visual department, under the direction of Mr. Cox, enhances learning through various means of sight and sound. Mr. Cox, with the aid of a student technician and fourteen projectionists, supervises the use of the projectors, orders films and records, maintains large wall charts, and is responsible for the maintenance of any visual-aid equipment. The various film strips, slides, movies, overhead projections shown by either the overhead or the opaque projectors, charts, and records are of great benefit to the school system; for by seeing and hearing the lessons, memorization comes easier. ■p GUIDANCE ROOM Lucille Rockey Penn. State, B.S. Ball State, M.A. Price Brookfield West Texas State B.S. f Doris Smith Anderson College, B.A. Social Studies - -Developing and instilling in its students an interest in the past, present and future is the task of the Social Studies De¬ partment. Therefore, younger students study World History and Geography in order to ob¬ tain a background of knowledge about the world in which they live. They also explore the his¬ tory of the state of Indiana and discern many facts about their home state. Upperclassmen study American History and Government to increase their knowledge of the country in which they live - -a knowledge which is vital in everyone’s life. In order to keep pace with the fast-moving world of today, the Social Studies Department has recently added another course to its cur¬ riculum . Senior students now explore the ever-growing field of sociology, which helps them to have a better understanding of people and their problems and prepares them for the situations they will encounter in modern society. Marian Noggle Marian College, A. B., Butler U., B. S. John Rhoades Indiana Central, A.B. Anne Whalen Indiana Univer sity, A.B. English--Through the efforts of the English Department, Lapel students are trained to be adept in creative and tech¬ nical writing, fluent in public speaking and debate, and comprehensive in the field of literature . Students are given a complete background of the fundamentals of the English language . In composition classes they are encouraged to organize their own ideas into comprehensive themes and essays . Through training in debating and public speaking they are taught to have self-confidence and to express themselves vocally. In literature classes they study the classic works of the great American and English writers and poets . These various classes serve to acquaint the students with all divisions of the English language. 73 II Art--Students at Lapel who possess artistic tal¬ ent are given occasion to express themselves through various art classes because self-expression of thoughts and emotions is vital to everyone. Drawing, painting, crafts, and ceramics all supply an outlet for personal expression. Art education provides many students with an opportunity to develop their individual creative potential. Music--The main function of the Music Depart¬ ment is to develop in the students an interest in and appreciation for all fields of music. In music class the students learn the rudiments of music and be¬ come acquainted with the classic composers and their works. Through participation in Concert Band, Marching Band, Concert Choir, and Girls Choir students are encouraged to develop their individual talents, both vocal and instrumental. In music theory class students study advanced musical structure and learn to compose their own songs. These classes all contribute to the advancement of the students by cultivating interests and talents that might otherwise go unnoticed. Genevieve I. Biology students gain first¬ hand knowledge as they dis¬ sect a variety of animals, collect and catalogue leaves and flowers, and examine living organisms. This study is also a preliminary course to more specialized sciences. Accurate formulas, the proper use of chemicals and correct lab procedures are a few of the skills learned from the Chemistry course. Jean Snyder Ball State B.S., M.S. Intricate safety procedures are tau ght as students learn to use the laboratory units . Separate units make individual learning much easier in this course. Physics, the most advanced science course, is offered only to Seniors. Physics is the science which deals with matter and its physical changes. This course, as well as the pre¬ viously mentioned ones, prepares students for the study of science in colleges. Math--The Mathematics department prepares many students for advanced work on college level and instructs others in fundamentals and principles useful in everyday life. First and second year Algebra, Geometry, and Senior Advanced Math provide occasion for exploring into this fundamental science. Students en¬ counter, among other things, the methods and logic of new math as they delve into the far-reaching field of mathematics . Billy Joe French East Central Jr. College, A.A. Miss. State, B.S. Ball State, M.A. Jon Trippeer Indiana State University, B.S. Fred St. John U. of Illinois, B.S. Agriculture--The main objective of the vo¬ cational education in agriculture is to prepare the vocational pupil for proficiency in the products. The agriculture courses I and II are taught alternate years to the combined Fresh¬ man and Sophomore boys, while courses III and IV are offered alternate years to the Junior and Senior boys. The F .F .A. is a vital part of the Ag pro¬ gram because it is through F .F .A. that boys learn judging and compete with other boys in many farming practices . The Agriculture Class participates in such activities as: land judging, crop judging, live¬ stock judging, F .F .A. contests, poultry judging, and various beneficial field trips . Industrial Arts--Industrial Arts is a study of the tools, materials, and processes of in¬ dustry. Courses in Drafting and Shop help de¬ velop skill and proficiency in a boy’s chosen field. Drafting is offered in all four high school years. The first two years are spent learning general drafting practices, the third year in learning machine drawing, and the fourth in studying architectural drawing. Only three years of Shop courses are offered at Lapel: Wood Shop 10, Metal Shop 11, and Advanced Shop for Seniors . An individual project and project plan are required every six weeks, and the students are also re¬ quired to follow rigid safety precautions as they prepare their projects . ! Home Economics--Girls interested in Home Economics or Nursing careers or the practical knowledge needed in home manage¬ ment, benefit greatly from the four years of Home Economics offered at Lapel. Home-Ec I is a prerequisite for Home-Ec II, as is Home-Ec III. Such useful topics as foods and clothing, personality development, home nursing, child development, consumer buying, family buying, and home management are taught in the three-year course. Two field trips, one to the Indianapolis Home Show and one to the Kroger Distribution Center, taken by the Junior and Senior girls, and a banquet given for the faculty by the Senior girls complete the well-rounded Home- Ec curriculum. Commercial--Courses in business ed¬ ucation enable the student to advance in the ever-expanding world of business . Although these courses intertwine, they are generally referred to separately. A Secretarial Training course helps stu¬ dents obtain and maintain their previous per¬ formances in Typing and Shorthand courses, while it acquaints students with office machinery and office skills . A General Business course contributes to the better understanding of business occupa¬ tions, wise buying practices, and the budget¬ ing and recording of finances . Students are acquainted with Bookkeeping and Accounting as occupations to aid them in making decisions concerning their career fields in a Business Law course. The Many Helpers We the students of Lapel owe much to people on this page and the next page, for these people have given much of their time to help make L.H.S. a better school. Remember these people when you walk down the halls, watch films in classes, ride a bus to and from school, and when you eat lunch at noon. Try to help make these peoples’ jobs a little easier so that they can add to your future in school. Who knows, you might be in their place someday. 1. to r., John Clem, Emma Smith, Bill Denny. But you didn’t. And that’s a good indication of the kind of career you might enjoy. Scientists, for instance, are the kind of people who thrive on challenge. That’s what leads them to science courses in school. And draws them into a lifetime of problem-solving in a scientific career. Take our scientists. They keep seeing a better way to design ignition systems—and they do it. They never stop looking for further improve¬ ments in our generators. Without their curiosity and appetite for challenge, we could never have designed our silver zinc batteries for missiles. And without students like you, we won’t be able to meet the fantastic challenges of the future. So, if science interests you, dig in now. To¬ morrow not only needs you—it needs you to be good. Here at Delco-Remy, we’re definitely a part of tomorrow. So we’ll be looking for you. Right after college.
