LAPEER CHANGES WITH THE CENTURY In 1924, a new Lapeer Senior High School (presently known as White Junior High) was built to serve the county’s growing population. A year earlier, Lapeer was fortunate to acquire one of the last Carnegie libraries built in the United States as the Lapeer Public Library. After WWII, many of the people of Lapeer began to leave the farm to work in automobile factories or at the Lapeer State Home, although Lapeer remained, basically an agricultural community. During these post-war years the Lapeer High School enrollment climbed and with it, the number of talented students in the areas of art, music, the sciences, mathamatics, the humanities and sports. As Lapeer moved into the sixties, another new Lapeer Senior High school (now Lapeer West) was built to accommodate the school system’s skyrocketing enrollment.
