Tomorrow May Be Too Late! INSTEAD OF TRYING TO BE SOMEBODY, 10 IS YOUR OWN YOUR OWN WAY THE PANTHERS LOSE BUT MARCIA WINS! Through the hard work of Liz Marr and many others, homecoming went smoothly this year. The five condidates for queen had to show their poise at the assembly by performing various stunts. Later, the candidates ability to think fast was challenged by specially prepared questions. Many people braved rainy weather to watch the parade through town. The rain must have dampened the Pantherâs winning spirit because our team went down to defeat in the homecoming game. During halftime the homecoming queen was crowned. The lucky girl was â Marcia Swett! The evening ended with the homecoming dance. 14 4 I J ! Top Left: Wait Querio and Dan Daley help Laurie Knapp with her stunt. Anita Bommarito has the honor of being valedictorian. Anita is graduating with a 3.8919 grade point average. Tom Phillips and Patty Parsch have tied this year for the position of salutatorian with a 3.889 grade point average. Although Mary Schlaff scored the highest grade point average of 3.972, she was unable to qualify for valedictorian because she did not attend Lap-peer Senior High long enough. Above L-R: Anita Bommarito, Patty Parsch. Mary Schlaff and Tom Phillips. 21 SPIRIT WEEK PEPS UP EVERYBODY! This year, Spirit Week was a big success. Monday was Rings and Bells day, Tuesday was Mr. Smith day, Wednesday was baby photo contest day, Thursday was past, present and future day, and Friday was Blue and Gold day. 22 23 WE BELIEVE .. . IN TEENAGERS THE BIG DECISION MAKERS The school board has succeeded in getting a basketball team made up of girls. It also decided to allow school buses to be used for field trips and spectator buses to away games. These are just a few of the many decisions made by our school board. Top Left Dr. Curly. Top Right: Mr. Lynch, Supt. of schools. Lower Left: Mr. VanDusen. Lower Right. Standing Dr. Stone, Dr. Thompson. Sitting: Mr. Connolly. Mr. Patterson, Mrs. Wisely. ?b SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS GIVE THEIR ADVICE The members of our Administration make many important decisions. They have to decide whether to have school open or closed when the weather is hazardous. This at times makes many morning students unhappy. One problem they solved for us this year was whether the student paper, âSpare Changeâ, could be sold on school property. It was decided that it could not. Top l.eft: Mr. Warner, Asst. Supt. Center Left: Mr. Hall, Busn. Mgr. Lower Left Mr. Jessop. Personnel Director. Top Right Mr. Henderson. Supervisor of Bldgs, and Grds. Lower Right: Mr. Townsend, Transportation Supervisor. THEYâRE BEHIND US ALL THE WAY Mr. Smith. Mr. Fitzpatrick, and Mr. Carpenter form the administrative body at Lapeer Senior High. They build their administration on a belief in teenagers, as Mr. Smith tells us in the annual back to school speech. To prove that they mean what they say, Mr. Smith and his colleagues yearly brave a crowd of now over 2,000 students for a full nine months â a truly remarkable feat. Top Right: Mr. Fitzpatrick. Mr. Carpenter. Mr. Smith. Cm ter Left: Robert Carpenter. Loner Left: John Fitzpatrick. Their duties include keeping attendance, filing records, supplying classrooms with their needs and helping students iron out technical difficulties. Top Left: Vicki Shoults. Receptionist. Top Right: Marcif Beckwith. Secretary to the Principal. Louer Left: Vicki June, Bookkeeper. Lower Right Helen Moore. Clerk. 29 OUR BRIDGES OVER TROUBLED WATER The counselors at Lapeer Senior High touch each of our lives sometime during the four years we are here. However briefly, and whether for school or personal problems, they leave some mark of their concern. Even if they donât always find a solution, the counselors try their best and give their all in helping students and for this we should thank them. Many thanks goes to Mr. Sak, our vocational director, for all of the help he has given many of us. Top Hight Dave VVehrle. Top Left: George Elliot. Center Right: Bill Stacy. Lower Left: Linda Schrock. Lower liight: .John Sak. YOUR RESPONSIBILITY IS TO THE FUTURE The world is many things. It is a round geographical sphere made up of land and water. It is the diverse nations and independent countries, as well as the people who compose and govern them. An understanding of the physical world, its nations, and its people, is what social studies is all about. Hopefully through our understanding of the world, we will find solutions to make it a better place for all men. Center Hiftht: Robert Lendl. Lower Left: Mike Halstead. 31 THE KNOWLEDGE OF WORDS IS Through the English program at Lapeer Senior High, students are given the key to unlock that gate. This year there is something for everyone â from oral interpretation to creative writing to comedy and satire. Under our newly expanded program students are given a chance to indulge in certain areas of English that interest them, therefore, creating a greater variety of keys to a greater variety of gates. r n Top Right: Janet Lawson. A SOLVED PROBLEM CREATES NEW ONES 38 One can truly say that the scientistâs work is never done. For every question that is answered, many remain unanswered. Sometimes the answer itself leads to other questions. In science, one learns how to navigate the long and winding road. Knowing how to find the answers becomes almost as important as the answers themselves. One also learns to define the problem to be solved. Using the scientific method, perhaps one day we will find our way to the end of the road. Top Right: Greg Gillaspy. Center Left: Patrick Gormley. Center Right: Donald Miller. Top Left: Gary Herfert. Center Left: A1 Hoppe. Center Right: Donald Peterson. Lower Left: Mike Brundage. Lower Right: Howard Benton. 39 THE CHALLENGING DEPTHS OF MATH By the time we graduate, most of us students will have been convinced of some truth concerning math. This is because math in itself is basically truth. All answers are either right or wrong â there are no maybes. The discipline of math will help us later in life to discover what is the right answer and what is the wrong. 40 Top Right: Don James. Center Left: David Cronin. Center Right: Dorene Morris. Lower Right: Robert McCarrick. Top Right: Robert Exelby. Lower Left: Leo Paveglio. Center Right: A1 Re z el man. Center Left: James Mikus. 41 STUDENTS GAIN FROM BUSINESS COURSES The business department offers a large variety of courses. Some are Typing, Bookkeeping, Shorthand, and Office Practice. By supplying such a wide variety of classes students are assured an entrance to the business fields. Top Right: Rod McEachem. Center Left: Shirley Dean. Center Right: Norma Dorland. 42 INDUSTRY IMPROVES YOUR TALENTS The industrial arts are taught at Lapeer to improve the talents of a great number of students who are inclined toward industrial arts, and help them develop their skills. Mechanical drawing, metal shop and wood shop are all part of this vocational education program at LHS. Center Left: David Felk. Center Right: Paul Szewczyk. Lower Right: George Grenevitch. Top Left: Gerald Guzick. Top Right: James Archer. Lower Left: Jack Redmond. Lower Right: Mike Davis. HOMEMAKING AS YOUR FUTURE Our Homemaking Department offers a variety of studies to those interested in becoming homemakers. Courses include the study of childcare, nutrition and foods, home decorating and furnishings, cooking and sewing. 46 Top Right: Doris Bennett. Lower Right: Valerie Cook. FARMING AS YOUR FUTURE For our students who would like to go into some sort of farming career we offer Agriculture I, II, III, and IV. The course studies plants and their growth and animals and their growth. As a special activity they will be butchering a pig to make sausage for the Future Farmers Pancake Supper. 47 Top Left: Vance Holmes. Lower Left: Karen Welke. OUR BODY BUILDING COURSE Girls Physical Education is one of excitement and enjoyment. The girls tackled a new sport this year, field hockey. Other sports on the agenda were volleyball, basketball, and gymnastics. On the masculine side of the ledger, Mr. De-cou and Mr. Nelson led their teenage Panthers through the rigors of wrestling, football, basketball and baseball. 48 Top Right: Ken Nelson. Center Left: Peggy Warner. Cgnter Right: Sharon Braidwood. iMwer Left: Sid DeCou. ADVANTAGES OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES At Lapeer Senior High, students can rid themselves of their provincialism by taking either French or Spanish. Anyone taking a foreign language will appreciate English more afterwards because English has borrowed and adapted many foreign words. Students may then arrive at a better understanding of their own language by the study of other languages. And of course, having command of another language is always useful in traveling abroad. Top Left: Robert Riggs. Top Right: Linda McCarrick. 49 ART AS A MEANS OF EXPRESSION Amid the domain of spattered clay spilled turpentine and chalk dust the Arts and Crafts Department was training grounds for Lapeerâs would-be Picassos and De Vincis. Art class is an escape from the daily pressures and an hour in which students can express themselves in any form they wish. i Top Right: Cynthia Jagow. Lower Left: Patricia Thwing. Left: Brenda Pescia. MUSIC IS THE VOICE OF CREATION The voice of music is very much at home at Lapeer Senior High. Harmonies abound in both voices and instruments, from the band to the chorus. The musical talents of Lapeer shows its creativity at the annual band and chorus concerts. A GOOD BOOK IS THE BEST OF FRIENDS In choosing friends, sometimes one needs help to distinguish between the good and the bad. So is it also when choosing a book â as there are good and bad people, there are also good and bad books. The librarians are always there to help any student overwhelmed by the vast quantity of printed material available in the library. In many ways they are truly the studentâs best friends. 52 Top Right: Bert Beach. Loner Left: Jean Wilson. Without Labor Nothing Prospers The labor of our Cooks, Custodians and Nurses at Lapeer Senior High shows that without them the school wouldnât prosper. Most of us donât realize how important these people are to the smooth function of LHS. We tend to take them for granted and donât often show them the appreciation they deserve. Top Left Rl: Glen Stewart, George Anderson, Ted Alexander, Mike Kilbreath. R2: Forrest Crampton, Errol Webb, Cal A. Holmes. Top Right: Nurse Merry Jagow. Lower Left: Pat Lilley, Helen Valentine, Sue Geoit, Mrs. Dunam, Nancy York. Lower Right: Nurse Abi Warner. 53 SENIORS LEARN TO FACE THE FUTURE As seniors, this is our last year. Some of us are glad to be leaving, others would rather not. Whatever our feelings as we graduate, weâll all have our memories whether good or bad. What we learned during our four years at LHS will still be with us, even if only in the back of our mind, to be conjured up as needed. The past has taken care of itself; now is the time to face what the future has to bring. Top L-R: Class Officers, Marla Cox, Tim Butterfield. Dan Daly, Dawn Fisher. It can also refer to mental growth and maturity. This is the kind of growth achieved by the members of one of the most active school clubs â The National Honor Society. Besides the induction of new members, the N.H.S. this year is also putting on their third annual Lionâs basketball game. This year the N.H.S. is also becoming involved in some service projects concerning the school and community. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY OFFICERS: L-R: Carol Bennington, Vice President. Patty Parsch. PLAYERS.â Most people will recognize the above quote of Shakespeareâs. The Thespians do more â they live it! For they are the ones who are most actively involved in the world of drama â whether working back-stage or on stage. Instead of sitting back and taking the roles of life as they come, the Thespians seek out different roles in order to sharpen their talents and skills. The Thespians this year also sponsored the successful musical, âFinianâs Rainbow.â Top Right L-R: Officers Scott Placeway, Dale Dennis, Linda Tripp, Cindy Stock. Tracy Lynch, Mary Kay Russell.
