That’s an easy thing to say... 3 Dedication In recognition of this couple’s part in the Lapeer Senior High, we dedicate our 1971 Pantherscope to Mr. and Mrs. Stewart W. Thiemkey. The Thiemkeys are living at 1268 Knollwood Drive in Lapeer and have lived in or near Lapeer most of their lives. Mr. Thiemkey was born in Hadley and Miss Anderson (as Mrs. Thiemkey was then) was born in Northville. Michigan. After graduating from Hadley High, Mr. Thiemkey attended Eastern Michigan University and the University of Michigan. He majored in American history and has been teaching for 41 years. He has been in the Lapeer school system for 28 years. Mr. Thiemkey enjoys golf, and when he finds time he likes to fish at North Lake in Glennie, Michigan where he and his wife own a vacation cottage. Mrs. Thiemkey graduated from Northville High School and went on to acquire her degree in English literature at Eastern Michigan University. She has been teaching in Lapeer for 23 years. In her spare time she loves to sew, and travel. In the years they have been married they have been to Europe three times. They spent the Christmas of 1969 on the Spanish Riviera. The Thiemkeys have been married for 21 years this June and have five children. Their youngest son, Bill, isa member of the graduating class of 1971. Mr. and Mrs. Thiemkey have been very helpful to the students of Lapeer, both as teachers and class sponsors. They have been dedicated in their work to bring knowledge to the younger generation of this community, and for these reasons, we dedicate our book to them. 13 The 1970-71 school year brought many firsts for the Freshman. The first time for extended day sessions, pep assemblies, sharing in Homecoming, the Christmas Ball, the Freshman-Sophomore Prom. Yes, it was the first year of high school, and the first time to look forward to three more years of learning, living, and starting toward the future. In order to make it to school by seven, many students have to catch their bus around 5:30. At ten o’clock the seniors and juniors get a fifteen minute lunch break during which time the sophomores and freshmen come to school. At 12:11 while the sophomores and freshmen are having their lunch, the seniors and juniors leave school. This was the first year that seniors and juniors were able to leave school early when there was a pep assembly. Due to the shortness of the lunch breaks the cafeteria was not able to serve hot lunches this year. For the Sophomores, 70-71 was the year of classrings, drivers' licenses, winning the Spirit Jug, and being able to put down the Freshman for the first time. This was the year for joining organizations, finding oneself in a big world crowded with many faces, and it was a year for living. It was the year for attending first hour class at seven a.m., participating in more activities, sponsoring their first play, and making the Prom a success. It was the year for seriously considering the future, whether it be college or some other vocation, and the year for anticipating becoming a Senior. Class Officers And Board Of Directors TOP, L.-R. Many times a “blah” day was brightened by knowing that there was a game that evening. Everyone is brought together by one thing in common, victory for the Panthers! 70 Lapeer’s Cross Country team is improving every year. Coach Mr. Benton worked hard this ’70 season and finished with a record of 5 wins and 4 losses. Lapeer placed 19th in the regionals and 5th in the Holly Invitational. In Cross Country, the team with the low score wins. Congratulations, boys! That evening, the parade was held in downtown Lapeer and the juniors won the float competition. Students and adults of Lapeer High worked together to make 70-71 a memorable year. Who will forget the time when your class was discussing youth's part in society and your teacher agreed with you? Or the time Mr. Smith told you that he understood that your mistake was just a matter of circumstance and let you go? Or the many favors you asked of the office secretaries and they helped you out?
