Text from Pages 1 - 256 of the 1970 volume:

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim. Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the road less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. II We Dedicate Our Book To Mr. And Mrs. Wilson We, the student body of Lapeer High School, dedicate the 1970 Pantherscope posthumously to Mr. J. Alfred Wilson and presently to his wife, Mrs. Jean Wilson. Both Mr. and Mrs. Wilson were born in Gwen, Michigan and lived there most of their younger lives. After attending Northern Michigan University, where he majored in industrial arts, Mr. Wilson met and married Jean in 1940. They moved to Davison where he taught school for a few years. The family then moved to Lapeer where Mr. Wilson lived a dedicated life, teaching mechanical drawing and wood shop for 22 years. He also worked as a night watchman at the White Junior High, and fulfilled a hobby—-that of doing much of the school’s carpentry work. Mrs. Wilson has now worked as an Audio Visual Director at the school library for four years, and has been busy in her spare time raising a family—Steven, Don, and Barb. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson have been friends of the students and have been dedicated in their work. For these reasons we dedicate to them our book. 16 Above, Schi elder. Above right, Mr. Warner. Above, Mrs. Curley, General Math. Right, Mr. James, Algebra I. 26 Depths Of Math Mr. Mikus, Plane Geometry, Basic Geometry Above: Miss Peterson, Plane Geometry, General Math. Right: Mr. Rezelman, Algebra II. Lapeer Senior High offers many op portunities in the field of Math. For college bound students there is Algebra I and II, Plane and Solid Geometry, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus. Also offered are Basic Math and Geometry and Basic Algebra. Only two years of Math are required at Lapeer, but some students take three and maybe four years of it for college purposes and for the great challenge involved ... and Math is a challenging subject. The challenge does not lie in the calm waters of Basic Algebra but rather in the deep dark depths of Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus. The student who faces the challenge will get some insight into the turbulent waters which lie ahead of him. Mr. Paveglio, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry Individuality Means Your Own Thing In creative realms, the real you escapes from behind the books and papers and in these realms you, the individual, stand out by revolving around your imagination and your personality. All of a sudden you find yourself in this modern world. Under the music category of fine arts, Mr. Schadel has led the Lapeer Senior High Band to a reputation of fine musical quality. Also under this category falls the choruses, directed by Mr. Smith. They achieve fine voice quality and show it throughout the year at special presentations. Mrs. Thwing and Miss Schlegel, art teachers, supervise the art classes which include Crafts, Art I, Exploratory Art, Studio Art, Jewelry, Art 2D and 3D, and Commercial Art. Mrs. Thwing, Art Miss Schlagel, Arts and Crafts Mr. Schadel, Band Mike Paul puts a glaze on his pot in art class. 28 Expand Your Languages . . . Mr. Riggs, french I, II, Spanish 111 Broaden Your Horizons At Lapeer Senior High there are two foreign languages offered. These are Spanish I, II, and III and French I and II. In today’s world with all the air travel and faster, easier, and cheaper methods of travel, it is good to know a little about the Language and customs of other lands. And this is what Mr. Riggs and Miss Mousseau try to teach their students. With Spanish-speaking Mexico to the South of us and French-Canadians to the North, it is good that the people in the U.S. can have the chance to learn these languages, and at Lapeer we are proud to offer this chance. ' Miss Mousseau, Spanish 1, II What Is Learning? A Journey, Not A Destination Mrs. Theimkey, English Mrs. Peterson, English It is the 1500’s. Ships cross the vast ocean bringing settlers from many different nations, and with them comes a new language. Amer-ican-English—the language that we all must know so that we are able to read, write, and speak correctly. Lapeer Senior High offers two types of English classes, along with a speech class, a class that studies American novels, and a creative writing class. Also a dramatics class was started this year. Another way that Lapeer Senior High students learn correct English is through extracurricular activities such as debate and school plays. Miss Timpone, English Left: Mrs. Compton, English. Above: Mr. Meredith, English, World History. 31 Home Is Where Our Lives Begin Homemaking and Agriculture are offered at Lapeer Senior High for the domestic individuals, the ones who are our Future Homemakers and Future Farmers. In Homemaking classes, sewing, cooking, and care of babies and children are stressed, since the knowledge of these things is needed most when starting a family. Agriculture trains students in the use of farm implements and the study of crops and animals. In today’s changing world, more and more people are getting out of the home and into office and other outside jobs, but home and farm work is still very important to our society ... for it is at home and on the farm where our life begins. 33 Train Today . . . Mr. Redmond, Metal Shop . . . For Tomorrow’s Jobs Most schools have an educational department which is comprised of several divisions—one of these divisions being vocational. Lapeer is one of the many schools using this idea and therefore gives the student insight into his future career, along with job training. We are proud to say that Lapeer High School engages in this program and that many students participate through wood shop, metal shop, and mechanical drawing. Mr. Beltz, Mechanical Drawing Mr. Chettleburgh, Wood Shop 35 Mr. Kinzer, World and American History, Political Philosophy Mr. Peterson, World History, Government. World Affairs Of God, Not A Tool Of The State Columbus, Magellan, Smith, Jefferson, Washington, and Lincoln. These, and many more, are all individuals who helped to found, shape and mold a wilderness into the strongest nation in the world today, the United States of America. The way these people worked and strived to build this democracy, to break away from traditions of monarchy and dictatorship in the Old World, to become free of state religions, and to become a child of God, not a tool of the state, is what our history teachers teach to the students. After learning about the absolute rule of other countries in the world, it makes the students of today appreciate our democracy better, and to become inspired to be the leaders of tomorrow. Mrs. Rescoe, World Geography Supporting The Nation Above, Mr. McEachern, Bookkeeping, Economics, Business Law. Above right, Mrs. Seaton, Typing. Right, Mrs. Dean, Shorthand, Personal Record Keeping. Below, Students learn the ins and outs of business. Believing In The People Mrs. Bugg, Office Practice, Typing, Bus. English LAPEER COUNTY LIBRARY Business has always been a great factor in the prosperity and success of the United States. It will continue to play a major role and therefore Lapeer Senior High School offers a business course consisting of Business Math, Bookkeeping, Shorthand, typing, and personal record keeping. Students in these courses are preparing to keep our economy and prosperity high and mighty, and we know this preparation will be doing not only these students good, but each student will be benefiting. Mrs. Luzi, Shorthand, Bookkeeping Questioning The Answers . . . Above left, Mr. Lehndorf, Physical SciencA Above right, Mr. Hunt, Physics. Left, Mr. Benton, Physical Science and Below, students in Biology class learn through using the microscopes. Not Answering The Questions Mr. Gormley, Chemistry As the years go by, man progresses, leaving behind him the past, looking into the future. But as this progression continues, man must refer to the past ... for where would he be without those years of previous experimenting. Someone had to begin the experimenting, the experiments lead to progress, and progress had lead to man teaching man. At Lapeer High School, man teaches man, but in a teacher-student relationship. This starts through Physical Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics and continues with college courses elsewhere. Through these classes, man again begins to experiment, progress and possibly teach. 41 Mr. Miller, Biology Open Minds — Not Closed Issues Man makes up society, and through society expresses himself and many problems are brought forth through this cultural relationship, whether personal or worldwide. In Sociology, one learns about people as a whole, while in Home and Family Living, one studies the individual in a private world. These two courses are offered at L.H.S. and many students engage themselves in these classes each year to learn of this cultural relationship, which exists for each and ev-every one of us no matter who we are. Miss French, Home and Family, Sociology Mr. Harding, Driver Education Students in Soc. class carry on discussions. Extensive Travel — Not A Smaller World When the United States was born, the need for transportation was not too great. But as the country progressed and grew, the people began to travel from house to house, from home to home and generally from the country to the city. Soon the need for transportation between countries arose. To satisfy these needs men such as Henry Ford, Frank Duryea, and Charles King strove to invent more rapid systems of travel, even though the people weren't agreeable on the idea yet. After World War I the automobile became the chief means of transportation in the United States. The people finally accepted the idea and now today, almost every family in the United States has at least one car. 42 Wonder Ed Builds Bodies 12 Ways At L.H.S. we have classes in English, History, Math, and other subjects to keep our minds in top condition. But we also have gym class to keep our bodies in top physical condition. Our country needs strong as well as intelligent individuals to be the leaders of tomorrow and exercising our bodies as well as our minds is one more step towards attaining this. At Lapeer, boys are required to take gym in their Freshman year, and for girls it is an elective class all four years. Mr. Nelson, Physical Education Left, Students in gym class build their bodies 12 ways. Below left, Mrs. Warner, Physical Education. Below right, Mr. DeCou, Physical Education. Seniors Oft I remember those whom I have known In other days, to whom my heart was led As by a magnet, and who are not dead, But absent, and their memories overgrown With other thoughts and troubles of my own. Strange that I did not know them then, Those friends of mine. I did not even show them then One friendly sign; But cursed them for the ways they had To make me see My envy of the praise they had For praising me. I would have rid the earth of them Once in my pride . .. I never knew the worth of them Until they died. The Student body of LHS congratulates Linda Kemler (Fodder) for her achievement of the title of 1970 Valedictorian. Linda is the daughter of Mrs. Richard Fock-ler of Lapeer, and James Kemler of Rochester. Linda has successfully earned the title with a 4.0 average, while participating in band, Pep Club, French Club, Science Club, and National Honor Society. Her spare time is spent studying, assisting a Girl Scout leader, participating in the St. Paul Lutheran Handbell Choir and the Lutheran Youth. Linda has always wanted to do a little something to make the world a better place in which to live, so she presently is active in local conservation projects. Her future plans include attending Michigan Technological University where she will major in chemistry and nuclear physics. Congratulations and good luck! Graduating with the second highest honors in the school, Susan Strong is the 1970 Saluta-torian with a grade point average of 3-9117. She is the eldest of five children of Mr. and Mrs. Steven L. Strong, 1990 Higley Road, Lapeer. During her high school years, Sue has been a member of the French Club, Science Club, and last but not least, the National Honor Society. In her senior year, she has been an office assistant and she has tutored other students in need of help. While leading the life of a high school student, Sue also pursues such interests as horseback riding, swimming, and reading and has worked at the A W. Sue has her future planned—attending Michigan State University to major in mathematics and secondary education. Congratulations Sue! Varsity Starts New Trends In Cheerleading The Varsity Cheerleading squad of 1969-70 has started many new trends in cheerleading. For the first time in Lapeer, the cheerleaders are using pompoms and are wearing culotte skirts and vests as uniforms. They have worked hard to acquire these things, and are proud to be the first to start this new trend. But they have worked twice as hard to inspire school spirit and get the team fired up. They soar to Furniture, or higher, They speed to Gowns and Gifts, But when the bought weighs down the buyer, Late, late, return the lifts. Newton, himself, beneath his tree, Would ponder this and frown! How what goes up so frequently So seldom cometh down. Isn’t it rather your hands which are too small, your vision which is muddied? You are the one who must grow up. Dag Hammarskjold At every moment you should choose yourself. But do you choose your self? Body and soul contain a thousand possibilities out of which you can build many I’s. But in only one of them is there a congruence of the elector and the elected. Only one— which you will never find until you have excluded all those superficial and fleeting possibilities of being and doing with which you toy, out of curiosity or wonder or greed, and which hinder you from casting anchor in the experience of the mystery of life, and the consciousness of the talent entrusted to you which is your I. The 1969-1970 Pantherscope Staff organized this summer with twenty-one members, six of them going to Northwood Institute for a journalism workshop. When school started in September, the staff chose a theme, which was individualism.’’ The cover design, color, dedication, and the general layout helped to develop this theme. We spent many nights working late to make this yearbook a great one. Effort, co-operation and teamwork were stressed as it takes more than one realizes to put out a GOOD yearbook. Our Pantherscope is constantly improving and we hope that next year’s book will be as good or better than 1970 was. Top left, Editors Lauri Paul and Julie Ballard discuss a picture. Middle left, Chris Shoultz, Debbie Moore, Linda Sierakowski, and Mary Jo Farrington look over a layout. Middle right, Sue Wildey, Cehri Smith, and Denise Albrecht crop some good candids. Below left, Lorna Houck, Cheyenne Con-ant, Terry Nieman, and Sue DeAr-mond watch as layouts are drawn up. 245 editor-in-chief cU CuuUUs assistant editor Ju ie. 3 4 arzf treasurer editor of foreword, dedication and epilogue CJctt £xj Yi advertising editor AfcUtoMp copy editor assistant copy editor underclassman editors layout editors yYluL UuSiThn QSY'S -- assistant sports editor organizations editors p crVyuxJ 'H oli-cMj (2, IT Vs • 1 v CL 3 O '3 photographers Cajbh uJcxt j jg CO L- faculty editor activities editor ? o o Ai senior editor senior index editor OJiAX)it yu 247 You can make the difference You can make the difference You can make the difference— You could change the world! 248
