Smith “I believe in teenagers . . This declaration was made by Mr. Smith when he came to l.apcer three years ago. Since that time our dedicated principal has proved many times that he does indeed believe in teenagers. He has shown us that if we are willing to earn his respect he will back us in our aims and intentions. As principal, Mr. Smith has strived to better the ways of the student body as a whole. Mr. Smith’s main ambition is to guide young people, especially at a time when their values and goals are rapidly changing. He is fulfilling this by working toward a specialist’s degree in education at The University of Michigan. Mr. Smith graduated from St. John’s High School in St. John’s, Michigan. He attended Central Michigan University and graduated with a B.A. After serving 2-1 2 years in Europe during World War II, he received an Honorable Discharge as Technical Sargeant in Artillary. Mr. Smith returned to the United States and spent 4 years at White Cloud, Michigan teaching and as principal. He and his family moved to Gaylord, Michigan and lived there for 15 years. In 1964 the Smiths moved to Lapeer, where he became principal of our High School. The Smiths and their 5 children: Mark, 18; Mike, 21; Cheri, 14; Paul, 13; and Deb, 10, now live at 770 Gregory Drive. For serving us, for believing in us, for helping us to grow we thank Mr. Smith in the best way we know how—the dedication of our book. His thoughtfulness to us will not be forgotten. 28 A day in the life of Mr. Smith. Chefs—Mrs Goit, Mrs. Valentine, Mrs. Rowers, Mrs. Koyl. Mrs. Yorks. Mr Armstrong SENIORS “For life is but a watch and a vision Between a sleep and a sleep. ” Algernon Charles Swinburne SALUTATORIAN Shelley Moore has a variety of interests besides being able to maintain a 3.9487 average which enabled her to be named Salu-tatorian of the class of 1968. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Olaf Moore, 218 Lincoln Street, has been a member of the National Honor Society for 3 years and an officer for 2. Shelley is a member of the Mixed Chorus, the Future Teacher’s Club, the Senior Class board of Directors, and she plays the flute in the Lapeer Senior Band Shelley’s main interest is music and she plans to go to Asbury College in Willmore, Kentucky to major in voice, organ, or piano. VALEDICTORIAN Mary Dianne Threlfall also maintains a 4. average. However, she did not qualify for Valedictorian because a two year residency is required and she has only attended Lapeer Schools for one year. Thus she is ineligible for the honor. Dianne transferred here this year from Shelbyville, Illinois. She lives with her parents, Rev. and Mrs. James A. Threlfall, at 1248 Knollwood Drive. Dianne enjoys reading, tennis, music, and she plays the violin. She belongs to the National Honor Society, the Future Teacher’s Club, and the Future Nurse's Club. She plans to attend Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina and study to become a medical missionary. George Kocur, Valedictorian of the class of 1968, is at the head of his class with a 4. average. George is the son of the lhor Kocurs of 1555 W. Genesee Street. His hobbies include music, hockey, tennis, cycling, and working with all kinds of radios. George was a member of the French Club, the Spanish Club, and the National Honor Society. He plans to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study physics or geophysics. CLASS HISTORY FRESHMAN 1964-1965 In the fall of 1964 we entered the doors of the Junior High preparing ourselves for the many tasks that lay before us. Ready and eager to undertake our first steps toward graduation, we accepted responsibilities one by one. As we looked ahead toward the coming year, we elected our first group of class officers: Mike Shigley, President; Jackie Moses, Vice-President; Patsy Smith, Secretary; and Chris Watson, Treasurer. Our Freshman year came to a close as we enjoyed a very successful party. SOPHOMORE 1965-1966 As the shiny doors of the Senior High opened with our new challenge, we entered ready to meet any obstacle with new and different ideas. We soon organized into the biggest class the new school had ever seen. We started the school year by electing Paul Parsch, President; Bruce Mclzow, Vice-President; Joanne Shannon, Secretary; and Bill DesJardins, Treasurer. As new members of the student body, we elected Paul Parsch, President of the Student Council. Spring soon rolled around and we now had two years of high school experience behind us. As the school year came to a close we enjoyed our Sophomore Prom. JUNIOR 1966-1967 Entering a third successful year, we were eager to prepare and plan a season that would always stand out in our minds as fun, educational, and one of the best experiences in our lives. While the first few days of organization were filled with excitement we elected Bill DesJardins, President; Phil Pierson, Vice-President; Micky Hayden, Secretary; and Cathy Burke, Treasurer. The fall season of football brought our team to a new athletic field, ready to take on all challengers. During this fall season, we elected Mickey Hayden as our class representative. Now that our turn had come to present the Junior Play, we were able to prove our class’ talent by presenting “Ten Little Indians”. May soon rolled around bringing one of the best Junior-Senior Proms Lapeer has ever seen. While the school year of 1967 came to a close, we as part of the student body elected Malcom Barclay, Vice-President and Sue Thompson, Secretary of the Student Council. SENIOR 1967-1968 As we began our fourth and final year, we once again looked ahead to finish the task that we once set out to accomplish. As this fall season brought about our last chance to prove our class one of the best to ever graduate from Lapeer High School, we once again organized into well over three-hundred. We started out the year by electing Bill DesJardins, President; Don Rice, Vice-President; Ann Gail, Secretary; and Diane Gallagher, Treasurer. During football season, and for our homecoming festivities, we elected Cathy Burke, Ann Gail, Micky Hayden, Shelley Moore, and Barb Stocker as attendants on Queen Diane Gallagher's court. We, as Seniors were also honored to elect Dennis Keefer and Micky Hayden as King and Queen of the Lapeer High School Annual Christmas Ball. Our years of high school are now behind us as we look ahead to futures full and bright. While we owe a great deal to the many parents, faculty members, and friends, we will never forget the high ideals they have bestowed upon us. Graduation may be the official significance of accomplishment, but we as graduates will always hold the highlights of our school days as the most important ones in life. 34 Respectfully submitted. During the course of such great and outstanding achievement, there have been loads of excitement and tense moments while competing with other teams. They, the J. Basketball team is thus the backbone of future Varsity Panthers. Their experience as J.V. players helps them learn sportsmanship, the glory of winning as well as the pains of defeat. Also, and probably the most important, as a J.V. player the athlete learns the value of competitive play. All this and more was absorbed by this year’s J.V. squad coached by Mr. DeCou. For these boys the 1967-68 season meant valuable time spent learning the fundamentals and basics of competitive play. 145 Dick Rickett attempts to regain the ball at the visitor’s basket. The arts prove to be a big part of our lives along this journey. WE FORGE AHEAD Tragedies may lake the lives of friends and relatives but no one will ever replace the joy of Sue and Lawry. The students of Lapeer Senior High are proud of Sue Seib and Lawry Hawkins as past journalism students and faithful contributors to our school and to our community. There will always be a place in our hearts for them both. OTHERS THOUGH MUST STAY BEHIND 216 EDWARDS BROTHERS ESSSSgS
