The staff of the 1965 Pantherscope has recorded many of your activities and achievements in a pictorial review. In essence the Pantherscope is a treasure book of memories. If you chuckle a little in remembrance at some pictures— or sigh at others, the purpose of the 1965 Yearbook will be achieved. Administration and Faculty 3 WE DEDICATE TO . . Mr. Charles . . Harrow The Senior Class of Lapeer High School wishes to dedicate this yearbook to a man showing outstanding dedication and enthusiasm for helping those students within his influence and his willingness to give his time and energy to any task or project designed to better the school or the students. It is, therefore, with pride and gratitude that we present this dedication and place the name of Mr. Charles N. Harrow at the head of our book and our hearts. 4 Because the Yearbook staff wished to show Mr. Harrow in his home—we wangled ourselves an invitation to dinner! After arriving Mr. Harrow showed us many items from his collection of antiques. After his very hectic evening Mr. Harrow gets the opportunity for relaxing. Besides being an artist Mr. Harrow is also a competent cook! Ask any staff member! Board of Education $ Standing: C. K. Schickler, William VanDusen, Richard Zemmer, Dr. Robert Stern, Gordon Hall. Zemmer, of 1065 Pine St., Lapeer, entered Lapeer schools in 1960, when it was necessary for her family to flee the Belgium Congo, where Dr. Zemmer had been a medical missionary for five years. Science and languages have been special interests for her. She is a member of the school band, French Club, Spanish Club, Future Nurses Club, and National Honor Society. Next year Luan will attend Grand Rapids Bible College, later transferring to the nursing school at the University of Michigan. Having lived in Belgium for 18 months and the Congo 5 years, Luan is interested in further travel, especially another look at Europe. Also, she likes to sew, knit, read and participate in youth meetings at her church. Salutatonan Linda is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Mooi, 8925 Saginaw St., Lapeer. She entered Lapeer schools ini960 when she moved here from Roseville. Her special academic interest in High School has been mathematics. She belongs to the National Honor Society and the Future Homemakers of America. Next fall Linda will enter Calvin College where she will prepare for teaching in the secondary school, probably with a mathematics major. Another of Linda’s ambitions is to visit Holland someday. In addition to traveling, Linda likes to sew, read, and play the piano. 51 Linda Mooi FRESHMEN 1961-1962 C L A S s H I S T 0 R r In September of 1961 we were eager freshmen wandering the halls of our Alma Mater. We were all confident of being the greatest class in our school’s history. To head our class we elected Gay Doty, President; JoEllen Seelye, Vice President; Tim Harris, Secretary; and Kay Graham, Treasurer. In the spring we were host to the first Freshmen Prom. SOPHOMORE 1962-1963 In 1962, as proud Sophomores, we chose Tom Shrader, President; Tom Hendershott, Vice President; Tom Coughlin, Secretary; and Jennifer Bain, Treasurer. In May the annual Student Council elections were held. Our candidates were Pete Hansen, President; Mike Coulter, Vice President; Vivian Cantrell, Secretary; and Jennifer Bain, Treasurer. Jennifer Bain was our only winner but we gave a very close race to the other Junior candidates. We also had two Sophomore plays directed by Mr. Fuentes. We ended our year with a beautiful Prom. JUNIOR 1963-1964 Our Junior year was a busy one for us. First of all we elected Tim Harris, President; Tom Hendershott, Vice President; Louanne Johnson, Secretary; and Linda Wagner, Treasurer. In the spring we presented our play, The Lark. It was one of the best dramatic plays ever seen in this school. The casting for the play was superior; and it will be long remembered by all who saw the play. In the spring our class was really busy. After our successful play we were ready for the Prom. Our class held a car wash to help raise money for the event. We honored the Seniors with a beautiful Prom which had the largest attendance in L.H.S. history. We closed our year by electing two officers to Student Council; Tom Hall, President and Jackie White, Treasurer. SENIOR 1964-1965 After a good summer we came back for a Senior year filled with confusion, joy, and sadness. We began the year by electing Tim Harris, President; Gary Parsch, Vice President; JoEllen Seelye, Secretary; and Kay Graham, Treasurer. As the year progressed we presented our play, The Diary of Anne Frank. Again the casting was excellent and the hours the committees and Mr. Sasse spent were fantastic. The play was a big success with much praise heaped upon the cast. This will be a year to remember for all the seniors. Many things happened both good and sad. One to remember was the Lapeer High basketball team powered by four starting Seniors who won Lapeer’s first out-right Tri-County League trophy that can be remembered by Lapeer’s “oldtimers.” They finished with an outstanding 12 win 4 lost record and rated in the state. With Spring came the Prom, Swing-out, Honor Assembly, Baccalaureate, and finally Commencement. So as we leave our Alma Mater we hope that we have helped our underclassmen, teachers, administration, our class sponsors, and our parents as much as they have helped us these past four years. We also know that the Class of “65” will long be remembered. It’s true significance can be seen in the face of any member of the student body, cheering the team or applauding for the queen candidates. Many people worked hard to plan our very successful Homecoming Assembly and Dance. All of L.H.S. was proud of our Queen Jennifer Bain. She and her court reigned over the Homecoming Ball after the game. As secretary of the Pep Club, Virpl jots down the high points of a meeting. Virpi Blom is a darling little pixie from Finland. She has been bringing a little of the foreign element to Lapeer High as our exchange student for 64-65. Virp has had plenty of time for observing an American family in action. She has been living with the Donald Whites. For everyone who has had any association with Virp, she will remain an indelible part of their high school experiences. Our leading man and lady relax between scenes. November 19 and 20 were memorable moments for the Senior Class. THE JUNIOR CLASS PRESENTS LADIES IN RETIREMENT Lucy Fiske ex-actress, lives in a remote house with her companion, Ellen Creed. Ellen, who has devoted her life to her sisters, Louisa and Emily (simple-minded maiden ladies), invites them to visit her. These eccentric persons make themselves at home, but when Miss Fiske reminds Ellen it is time for them to go back, they are unwilling to do so. Miss Fiske and Ellen quarrel, and Ellen prepares to send her sisters to London. She has, however, secretly told them that they shall always remain with her. The sisters go for a drive, though Miss Fiske thinks they are leaving for good; the servants have been sent away (by Ellen), and Ellen and Miss Fiske are left alone together. On the return of the sisters Miss Fiske is gone—on a trip, Ellen says—and all three sisters settle down in what they regard as their own home. Meantime, Albert, nephew of the Creed sisters, who had paid a secret visit and got money from Miss Fiske, turns up again. He has robbed a bank and determines to hide with his aunts. Learning that Miss Fiske is away, and suspecting something, he pieces together the evidence. With the help of the maid Lucy, he lays a trap for Ellen, by reproducing in pantomine, in the moonlit llvingroom, the scene of Ellen’s murder of Miss Fiske. Ellen, who faints when she sees what she imagines is the ghost of her victim, plays a courageous but losing game. Knowing that Albert and Lucy realize what she has done, she plans for the security of her sisters, and gives up to the police. A trip inside some of our classroom doors will reveal “all.” Seniors Homemaking girls have been exploring the area of dress design while the junior gals look into the advantages and disadvantages of convenience foods. 172 The combined talents of our mixed chorus, drama, and art departments undertook the presentation of the musical, Oklahoma. Nelson Eddy in Oklahoma! The “long walk” tells the story of the new wing, as the mechanical drawing groups became the christening classes. In Speech this year students have been able to explore many new areas with the construction of a puppet theatre. n Building the theatre required top- notch architects. The Chemistry II students have undertaken many special projects. The Lapeer Vocational Adult Education Program was in full swing. We extend our appreciation to those who supported our yearbook.
