Here we learn to live in a modern world as well as reading, writing, and arithmetic. We grow from children into young men and women who pass through the doors of L. H. S. are the hope of tomorrow. We will make America grow with our new ideas which we are so anxious to try. Then is not L. H. S. likened to a fountain from which flows the water that makes all around it grow. Judy Smith Mr. A. E. Perhaps you share with me the hopes and expectations to be met with confidence and enthusiasm. What lies ahead, where are we going, and how will we be able to help shape our destiny? The answers will be long coming, but if we apply ourselves to finding answers that best satisfy us, we have begun. Graduation cannot be a fulfillment, it must serve as one more step towards attainment of a useful goal and a purpose. 1 am reminded of a story about a traveling man who happened on an old country road during the spring thaw. As he approached a particularly bad stretch in the road, his eyes were drawn to this sign; PICK YtrvR Rur cflRFFUiLY • - —' r . • V4011 Be uJ it foR. thf • — t FXT 3 to Miles . 1 1 May we all pick the right track which will lead us unswervingly to the attainment of our hopes and ambitions. Student Council President r 15 exhoaieA 7a Mr. A. E. Seaton We, the class of 1961, wish to dedicate our yearbook to Mr. A. E. Seaton. We feel that Mr. Seaton, Senior High principal for 14 years and faculty member for 26 years, has been an outstanding example of leadership and dedication of principles to the school as well as to the community. We are sure that if Mr. Seaton were philosophizing on the past, he would say something like this: If I were standing here, and the whole world outside were indifferent to what I was doing, I would still want to be doing just what I am. 9 1 3pp. eciaiuut I Mrs. Downs, junior and senior counselor We, the class of 1961, wish to express our appreciation to Mrs. Downs for all the advice and help she has given us in the past two years. 18 Elizabeth Pierson Vcd foctonicM Victor Lebedovych ScJutatoniGsi Elizabeth Pierson earned the honor of being valedictorian of the class of 1961 with an average of 3.904, or an A average. Jli t uf, It was In September of 1957 that we, the class of '61, made our entrance into the halls of our Alma Mater as stout-hearted Freshmen. To guide us through our first of four successful years that would gain us the prestige of being one of the greatest classes of LHS history, we elected John Forrest, president; Helena Hanson, vice-president; Georgia Doty, secretary; and Martha Minford, treasurer. Many classes have had the sad chapters of their history take place at the Freshman-Sophomore Field Games. We did not as we easily beat the Sophomore class. We ended the year by enjoying a nice prom at the Sophomore's expense, as a result of our victory. In the fall of 1958 we found ourselves as confident Sophomores. In this our second successful year we were again victorious on the Freshman-Sophomore Field Day. This however, was not a mere victory over the Freshman, but rather it gave us the proud distinction of being one of the only classes in LHS history to be the victors in both years. In May the annual Student Council Elections were held. Dave Fleming, Terry Knapp, Lee Daniels, and Nancy Priestap were our candidates for president, vice-president, secretary, and treasurer respectively. Although we were not victorious, this election was successful in another way. The excellent campaign the class put on showed us what we could do as a whole. During this year, ending with our making a grand floral rope for the Seniors, the class was led by John Forrest, president; Helena Hanson, Vice-president; Judy Smith, secretary; and Nancy Priestap, treasurer. Rising up to the status of Juniors, we elected Dave Fleming, president; Sharon Cote', vice-president; Judy Smith, secretary; and Sharon Smith, treasurer, as officers for this our most successful year. In April we presented our Junior Play entitled The Matchmaker. The play, with Sharon Cote' and Terry Knapp in the lead, was not only a huge success but was also proclaimed by the Lapeer County Press as The Best Ever. This certainly added to our prestige as a class. Then in May Student Council Elections rolled around again. We did not lose this time. We made a clean sweep with Dave Fleming, Larry Armstrong, Georgia Doty and Nancy Priestap. As our Junior-Senior Prom we picked the theme Midsummer Night's Dream. The class worked hard on it and we were rewarded with a great prom. As proof we were probably the only class who managed to decorate the gym real nicely, right around a big, authentic, fresh-cut, apple tree. With this success we ended our Junior year and headed for the top. At last we're Seniors, and what a year! The class is headed by Vic Lebedovych, Barry Wickstrom, Cece Parini, and Sharon Cote'. Our Senior Play was the classic Jane Eyre starring Yvette Duguay and Terry Knapp. It was another among our many successes. Then second semester began. Shorter and shorter was our time left in Lapeer High. Faster and faster came the events-All Sports Banquet, Senior Prom, Senior Trip around Michigan, and Honors Night. Baccalaureate, Swing Out, and Final Exams. And lastly, Commencement - all very memorable events, ones that we shall remember always. And then, unbelievable as it may seem, we were out of high school - each one left to go his own way. It is therefore, with the fond memories of the Senior year and all the other years, along with the gratitude that is so richly deserved of the administration, our sponsors, and our faculty, that we, the class of 1961, leave this school, sincerely hoping that we have left this school in a better condition (if that is possible) than when we entered it, four short years ago. This years team had a fine defense but an offense that had trouble mustering that scoring punch when needed. A few more breaks at the right times and things might have been a lot different on the win-loss column. The Panthers finished second in the Tri-County league this year.
