In the annual Freshman-Sophomore Field Day in October, we lost to the Sophomores and so sponsored the Freshman-Sophomore party in the spring. In 1958 as confident sophomores we chose Don LeDuc, president; Gini Lou Porter, vice president; Anne Knutson, treasurer; and Juanita Jones for a second term as secretary. In May the annual Student Council Elections were held; our candidates were Don LeDuc, president; Art Dennis, vice president; Olga Lebedovych, treasurer; and Juanita Jones again as secretary. We established a record by electing all four of our candidates to the Student Council offices; this set the pace for the rest of our years in L. H. S„ one success following another. In June we gave the seniors a grand floral rope for the annual Swing-Out Parade. Full of confidence and raring to go, as juniors we elected Dan Oberlee, president; Dick Arksey, vice president; Harriet Van Dusen, secretary; and Judy Ongena as treasurer. 48 In March we presented our great Junior Play, A Man Called Peter . A sentimental, dramatic story of the famous Reverend Peter Marshall, very well done. As usual the class did a terrific job of selling tickets and the play was enjoyed by all who saw it. Again in May we prepared for Student Council Elections and were jubilant when Don LeDuc, Art Dennis, Harriet Van Dusen, and Olga Lebedovych made a clean sweep of the Student Council elections. We chose Ice Palace’ as the theme of the Junior-Senior Prom. The work of designing, building, and decorating the gym into an ice palace was interesting, challenging, and fun. As the Senior Class of 1960 we elected Dan Oberlee, president; Lyle Stewart, vice president; Juanita Jones, secretary; Judy Ongena, treasurer. Enthusiasm ran high as we gave our Senior Play, Thunder on Sycamore Street, a dramatic story of modern suburbia with a powerful message. Junior Flay Cast After first semester exams we suddenly realized our high school days were almost over, but before we could start to feel sorry for ourselves, events came crowding faster and faster—All Sports Banquet, exams, Senior trip. Honors Night, Baccalaureate, Swing Out, Commencement and out into the worlds of business, college, the armed forces, or marriage. We, the class of 1960, have thoroughly enjoyed the time spent at Lapeer High School and will always be proud to call Lapeer our Alma Mater. Our gratitude goes forever to our parents, teachers, school employees and class sponsors, who have unselfishly given their time to teach us how to live peaceably and enjoy ably among our fellow men. Dan Oberlee President, Class of 1960 Drivers Education A CARBURETOR, WHAT'S THAT? asks these Inquisitive students of Mr. Harding, the driving teacher. AMONG THE MANY EXTRAS OFFERED TO YOU AT L. H. S„ is an excellent driver education course. The students are expertly trained by Mr. Harding to handle a car well and to obey all safety regulations. After class work, the students are ready to learn how the automobile works. Thanks to an excellent system and very fine instructor, almost everyone passes the test and gets ready to take over the family car. THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF LEARNING TO DRIVE is the classwork, where the students are taught the rules and regulations, as well as the fun. 50 eachers Assembly YE OLE TEACHER’S HOME One more time! President Don LeDuc Vice Pres Art Dennise Secretary Harriet VanDusen Treasurer Olga Lebedovych ELECTION DAY AT LAPEER HIGH SCHOOL One of the more exciting days of the school year for the most part of the student body—is the election of the student council officers. There was no let down this year as to enthusiasm of the students. The pictures on this page illustrate some of the pagentry that goes with ELECTION DAY. It is interesting to note that this is the second year in a row in which the Junior Class has been voted into the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. A cavalcade of cars bring the candidates to the football field, where the student body waits to listen to the many speeches. The spirit of the elections builds up. To promote class spirit each class regimentates a segment of the band to lead them into the political arena. 64 Drama Club 1st row; left to right: D. Oberlee, F. Klungus, J. Farrington, S. Ron Griffin and Ian Ruggles compete against each other for the championship of the pie eating contest. The Freshman - Sophomore Field Day is one of the most important events of the school year. Each year the two classes compete against each other in field games. Some of these events include sack races, relay races, three legged race, and dashes, and the pie eating contest. The spectators watch the events closely. Sophomores march on to the field. This is what a champion pie eater looks like after a contest. Lorena Rader was the winner for the Sophomores. The Cheerleaders who cheered the class to victory are left to right: Marcia Vesely, Barb Burroughs, Patti Evans, Janet Farrington, Jerry Hartly, and Judy Oost. The classes promote class spirit by wearing their class colors and decorating the goal posts. The Sophomores were the victors this year by a high score. Freshmen Orientation Ralph Wilcox, Gary Helton Interviewing Each Other. For the past four years we have made use of the Skinner Lake Camp for a week of Freshmen Orientation. Two sections of Freshman, along with their English Teachers, a counsulot, and a group of Future Teachers attend the camp each day. The Students participate in many activities such as exploring the woods, gathering and cutting wood, discussing school problems, interviewing each other and learning school songs. Before leaving the camp each group of Freshman leave the camp grounds in better shape then they found them. Students look forward to this program each year so that they can become better acquainted with Lapeer High School.
