Judy Goodrich Olympic Fencer Judy Goodrich, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Goodrich, started fencing in October, 1951, and showed great promise. In the following three years, her coach, Mr. Joe Waffa, placed her in the Nationals in New York where she placed 29th, 12th, 8th. By this time she had won the Michigan Women's Fencing Giampionship and the Michigan and Midwest Women's Fencing Championship among other titles. She was well on her way to being among the best women fencers as a sixteen-year-old sophomore. In the 1955 Nationals she placed 5th, making her eligible for an Olympic berth. After winning the New York Metropolitan Fencing Championship and placing 3rd in the 1956 Nationals, she was named the Number 3 member of the United States Olympic Fencing Team. During the summer of 1956 she stuck to a rigid training schedule in preparation for her trip to Australia. In November, 1955, she left for Australia, arriving there two weeks before the games started in order to get in more practicing. Although she was eliminated in the preliminary bouts, it was a great honor for a seventeen-year-old girl to be a member of the Olympic Fencing Team. She may again go to the Olympics and come back a champion. The students of Lapeer High, as well as the people of Lapeer, know that she is a champion regardless of titles and are proud of Judy and her great accomplishments.
