CONTENTS FACULTY introduced by Mr. Marvin Blanchard SENIORS introduced by Jerry O'Connor, President JUNIORS introduced by Richard deBeaubien, President SOPHOMORES introduced by John Quade, President 2 A book is a living voice. It is a spirit walking on the face of the earth. It continues to be the living thought of a person separated from us by space and time. —Samuel Smiles SPORTS introduced by Tom Wilson ORGANIZATIONS introduced by Sue Newton, President of Future Nurses Club JUNIOR HIGH introduced by Helena Hanson, Eighth Grade FRESHMEN introduced by Gini Lou Porter, Treasurer 3 DEDICATION We, the class of 1957, wish to dedicate this book to Janice and Lyle Hoffer. They have unselfishly donated their time and effort to our class in any activities we undertook during our junior and senior years at Lapeer High School. Judy Goodrich Olympic Fencer Judy Goodrich, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Goodrich, started fencing in October, 1951, and showed great promise. In the following three years, her coach, Mr. Joe Waffa, placed her in the Nationals in New York where she placed 29th, 12th, 8th. By this time she had won the Michigan Women's Fencing Giampionship and the Michigan and Midwest Women's Fencing Championship among other titles. She was well on her way to being among the best women fencers as a sixteen-year-old sophomore. In the 1955 Nationals she placed 5th, making her eligible for an Olympic berth. After winning the New York Metropolitan Fencing Championship and placing 3rd in the 1956 Nationals, she was named the Number 3 member of the United States Olympic Fencing Team. During the summer of 1956 she stuck to a rigid training schedule in preparation for her trip to Australia. In November, 1955, she left for Australia, arriving there two weeks before the games started in order to get in more practicing. Although she was eliminated in the preliminary bouts, it was a great honor for a seventeen-year-old girl to be a member of the Olympic Fencing Team. She may again go to the Olympics and come back a champion. The students of Lapeer High, as well as the people of Lapeer, know that she is a champion regardless of titles and are proud of Judy and her great accomplishments. C. K. JOE SWAIN Not Pictured: It's skill, not strength, that governs the ship. F.F.A. 1.2. Class History 1953 . . . eager freshmen, we elected Tom Wilson our president; Chuck Rich, vice president; Anne Bishop, secretary; and Judy Swab, treasurer ... we put up a good fight with the sophomores in the annual Field Day in October . . . but we lost and so had to sponsor a dance with the sophomores as our guests. 1954 ... as confident sophomores we chose Tom Wilson for a second term. Holding office with him were Mike Carter, vice president; Shelley Sullivan, secretary; Doris Ritch, treasurer. . this year we walloped the freshmen . . . and we were the guests at the annual dance. Tom Wilson, Mike Carter, Shelley Sullivan, and Doris Ritch were on the sophomore slate in the Student Council elections . . . Mike Carter was the only one to win an office. . . as the sophomores make the floral rope for Swing Out each year, we gathered all available blossoms to make a long, long garland. 1955 . . . once more, as a junior, Tom Wilson won the presidency of the class. Dale Colter, a newcomer to the roster, was the vice president with the girls, Shelley and Doris, back again as secretary and treasurer . . . The Remarkable Incident at Carson Corner, our junior play, was interesting, challenging, having no scenery and an unusual plot. Tom Wilson, Mike Carter, Sue Newton, and Doris Ritch swept into the Student Council as president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer . . . our junior prom was planned around a southern colonial theme . . . during that spring sometime it hit us . . . our last year at Lapeer High School was almost here. 1956 ... as seniors, we elected Jerry O'Connor to the presidency. With him served Dale Coller, Shelley, Sullivan and Judy Swab . . . One Foot in Heaven, a heart-warming story of a family in a parsonage, was directed by Mrs. Lyle Hoffer ... as was our junior play. Our Senior trip took us to Chicago by train, to Mackinac Island and through the locks by boat, and on to Detroit . . . events came crowding faster and faster . . . Swing Out, Baccalaureate, Honors Night, exams, Commencement . . . and out into the business world, college, the armed forces, or marriage. We enjoyed every minute of the years we spent at Lapeer High School . . . we will always be proud to say Lapeer was our school . . . our gratitude goes forever to our sponsors and teachers who have taught us to work and live among our fellow men. Pat Dan forth Mike Carter Billy Bentley CLASS PROPHECY Ambassador Merwyn Elliott American Embass) London, England Dear Nephew: I wish you could have been here for your class reunion. It was absolutely wonderful. You would hardly know some of the kids (?) whom you graduated with. Dick Johnson has his own jazz band and postponed a date at Carnegie Hall, owned by Sam Arms, just to fly in for this reunion. Janis Serre is his vocalist and doing a fine job. Speaking of bands, Darlene Bruman and chuck Rich are happily married and raising a band of their own to accompany Chuck on television. Also, there has been a girls' band formed from the class, lead by Charlene Rae Wendt, who is replacing Ina Ray Hutton. The band includes Sally Burt, Nancy Carpenter, Marilyn Minford, all of whom are still looking for the guys in their lives, and Judy Erickson and Audrey McDonald who stopped looking long ago. The theme of the band is Swing and sway with Charlene Rae. They feature that great whistler, Nancy McMullen. But this is just a fraction of the talent from the class of '57. Joyce Mason has replaced Rise' Stevens in the Metropolitan Opera, and Titus Kile is the latest hit in the folk song world. Bill Scringer was in another accident and had to cancel a booking at the Stork Club, which is owned by Ed Lincoln. Lee Agee and Bill Bentley have merged artistic abilities and incorporated Artists and Models . Some of the girls modeling for them are Judy Dorland (still collecting rings), Karla Findley, Nancy Krackow (still dreaming of a certain star) and, last but not least, Joyce West, as darling as ever. But the field of vocations is even wider. Andy Lichy has fulfilled his dream as he is head coach at Notre Dame. Also a man of great reknown is Dr. Stewart Schenk (doctor of dentistry), very efficiently assisted by Mary Beth Seelye (lab technition) . His fame was greatly helped by his favorite advertising girl, that smiling Miss Tube of Toothpaste, Pat Raby. Quite a bit of his advertisements appeared in the County Press, now edited by Midgie Beach. Carol Regan writes a sensational column about the Glitter and Glamour of Being The Wife of Marlon 48 CLASS PROPHECY Brando, which she sends from her home in Hollywood. Sally Freeman, Margaret Cranick, Pat Danforth and Bev Duerden, fugitives from journalism class, are also star reporters for the Press. Clark Barton has taken over the Arthur Godfrey show but calls it Spark with Clark. The director of the show is Shelley Sullivan with Sanford Russell as cameraman and Alice Peters as head of the make-up department. His fabulous rival on another network is the prominent sports reporter, Kay Russell, who just loves to feature our hometown boys, Larry Eckel, Ron Lock and Do ig Walker of the Detroit Lions, coached by Dale Coller and Carl Shoultz, and Jim Grant of the Detroit Tigers. Jerry Reedy is a disc jockey on radio and calls his program Rock with Reedy and on another station at the same time is a show called, Don't Rock With Reedy, Dance With Daly. You guessed it, the M.C. is Art Daly. Joyce Jones directs an educational T.V. program made up of a panel of such famous teachers as Larry Thiemkey, Jo Anne Martus, Mary Welt and Rosalene Maasch. Joy Pearson sits in as a student to make the program more realistic. The mention of education reminded me that Pat Mayer and Nancy Hart are Physical Education teachers at old L. H.S. and Rip Crandell is principal. By the way, he and Barb Inman are still going steady. Bob Rains is producing the movie The Tall Men Riding , starring Lee Brewer, Denny Troy, and Dwight Thompson. Madeline Mazurkiewicz, the former Miss Universe, is now in the movies under the guidance of Jim Bennington, her manager. Her next picture will be released soon, in which she co-stars with Jack Kennedy who finally made it to Texas (and beyond). Another movie soon to be released is the life of Tom Wilson, filmed by M.P.M. (Gary Miies, Jerry Paslean and Seth Morey) and directed by Jerry Jasper and Gordon Potter. Tom lives next door to Judy Goodrich. Richard Hill is Judy's coach and he says they expect to capture the world's fencing championship again in the next Olympic meet. Judy's house was built by Eugene Reppunn and Jim Roach, and her swimming pool was put in by Joe Swain and Bill Summers and is constantly in use by her neighbors, Janet Potter and Jane Whitney (who still live next door to each other). The furnishings in Judy's house were designed by Janet Grossbauer and Irene Werden. All in all, it is magnificent! Quite a few of your old classmates are working here in Lapeer, many of them in their own businesses. Jean Cross finally decided to quit working at the Elba Drive-In and went into business for herself and now runs Jean's Beanery . Her waitresses include Carmen Stableford, 49 CLASS PROPHECY Arlene Acker, Marilyn Bonesteel and June Brunk. The town librarians are Lucille Suuppi and Peggy Strong. They have a wide selection of books written by Basil McGlashen and Nelson Waffle, the two fellows who really went places (in their explorations to far off realms). Wilma Flemming is head nurse at the General Hospital with Ruth Avis, Freda Buckingham and Josephine Ruddock on her staff. Bemie DeGroat, who married Joyce Jarvis, and Donna Spencer worked at Vincent's for so long that they now own it under the name of DeGroat Spencer. Bob Alt owns Alt Radio TV Service and Roy Heckman is his right-hand man. Janet Putnick owns what used to be Wendorf Cleaners, and Neil Relitz owns South Side Auto Parts. Donna Collins runs a resort at Lake Nepessing while Janet Carls runs one at McKeen Lake. Jim Trim manages the A. P. Janice Ryan is head buyer at Penney's and Diane Songster is still working at McLellan's along with Sharon Loomis. Marilyn Hauxwell has full management of the Barrett Hotel now, and Stanley Bentley acts as bartender in the lounge downstairs. Barbara Bice is hat check girl, Jim Bunker is doorman, and Judy Davison is the cigarette girl. Sharon Coulter is working at Lyons and Smith's, and Janet Sheick is co-owner of Branson's Dairy Bar. Well-known secretaries around town are Juanita Carson and Mary Ellen Bice. They work for the Board of Education and Rasmussen's Insurance Agency. Jon Ellen Fisher, Mary Bradshaw, Pat Clark, and Norma Wagner have started a woman's police in Lapeer, and they buy all of their patrol cars from Dale Brocker and Jerry Rancour, the Ford dealers in town. Ron Van Kuren and Don Topham wash cars and Jim Brown test drive; for them. McCauly Dungee, Carl Poor, Jim Starr, Don Cranick, Stuart Gingell, and Ed Dunsmore are prosperous farmers and buy most of their farm equipment from Bob and Bill Rutherford, who have set up a farm implement service in Attica. Jan Carter is still working at Ude Loans, now under the management of Anne Bishop. Patti Daly is employed by Anne along with Judy Swab who uses the knowledge of figures to run the financial end of the business. Mike Carter is president at General Motors with Dick Rabb as his head engineer and John Whitehead as stockboy. There are a few old married folks around town too! Bob Grandstaff and Mary Ellen Van Wagnen are married and in the same boat (that of matrimony) are: Roberta Brower, Jolene Conner, Pat Pettit, Doris Ritch, Janet Upper, Shirley Fick, Murwin King, Jerry O'Conner, Ruth Whitten, and Donna Longman. 50 CLASS PROPHECY I hear that wedding bells will be ringing very shortly for Marjorie Smith and Lucille Hetchkiss, who are having a double wedding. And not too long after that, Janet Smith and Jeanette Sowgle will be having a double weddjng. The men about town, those who are declared bachelors, are Dick Berlin, Ed Vakula, Paul St. Pierre, and Bob Marshall. Their favorite hang out is Rumph's Rumpus Room , owned and operated by John Rumph. Some of the graduates are out of the country. Sharon Unger is still wowing the guys in the Navy, on her U.S.O. tours, as a comedienne, with Marilyn Brandt as her side kick. Sue Newton goes along as nurse to help the boys recover from seizures of laughter brought on by Sharon's fabulous story of her journey on the high seas. In the deep, dark wilds of Africa, Harry Blalock, Larry Porter, Joan Ketchum, Nancy Valentine, and Margaret Spencer are carrying on missionary work which they chose as a career. Kay Dunning, Wayne Grover, and Jerry Haddrill have become isolationalists from living in Hadley for so long. But Donna Reed, Shirley Running, Willie Mae Street and Angela Sweeney are rooming together in Chicago. They liked it so much on the senior trip, they went back for good. Norm Umpstead and Floyd Hardy own an advertising agency in Chicago and do quite a business for Ginette Hudson, a great women in your world of politics, and Kay Henderson, who runs the nationally known Henderson Hatbox . Art Monroe is also living in Chicago and making lots of money as a brilliant lawyer. There were a few I missed at the reunion, they include, Mary Jane Heiter and Peggy Higley----1 heard they live in Flint--and Jerry Hill, Arnold Hiltz, Gary Simpson, and Darwin Worden. I didn't get a chance to speak to these people so I don't know what they are doing now. It was wonderful seeing them and being one of the hostesses and I am terribly sorry you couldn't come. Everyone looked wonderful and had a good time. Well, nephew. I'll hang my close here and don't forget to write soon. SI Junior Play THIRD ROW: N. Umpstead. K. Russell, H. Adams, B. Ducrden, D.
