The Board of Education HE present purpose of our schools is to prepare children, youth and adults to take a more efficient and active part in the other great social institutions, the family, church, government and business. Modern life depends for its existence and growth on how well this preparation is made. To be intrusted by the people with the guidance of such a work is no mean distinction. Such guidance should be in the hands of men whc are public spirited, intelligent, liberal minded and of broad experience with other men and business affairs. Education has been expanding and moving ahead rapidly under intelligent leadership. The Board of Education of Lapeer has had a broad vision of the educational needs of the city. The members have been big enough men not to listen to the whims, the complaints and criticism which come to everyone in public life, but they have had courage to steadily maintain a policy which has placed Lapeer educationally on the map. One of the most marked characteristics of this Board has been the harmonious relations which have existed among its members. Politics, partisanship or personal prejudices have never entered its deliberations. This has been the most important factor in its success. The present Board has seen this high school almost double in enrollment. The Junior High School organized, new departments added and the erection of one of the finest and mort modern high school buildings in the state. The individual members all have been long and prominently identified with the business and professional life of the city and have freely given of their time and energies in ether capacities. Dr. W. J. Kay and Mr. Kirk White have been continuously mcmLers of the Board for almost twenty years. Mr. A. C. Holland has been its efficient secretary for over a dozen years, Mr. Elgin Turnbull has served the city in many capacities as a member of the old City Council to the present time when he represents the city on the Board of Supervisors, Mr. F. L. Larry is serving his second term as mayor of the city, Mr. E. L. Paddison and Mr. E. T. White are among our younger, notedly successful business men. These men individually take a keen interest in school life and are making every effort to provide the best possible educational opportunities to our boys and girls. PAGE NINE
