As Seniors we can have no more of the joys, trials, perhaps sorrows, and those companions with whom we have mingled for so long we must leave. Joyfully we have lived a small part of our life, may the rest be as much of a blessing. And so it is that we are publishing this Year Book —our Year Book. To preserve in our memory and yours that which we are pleased to call our happiest moments. It is our wish that you, too, will receive the benefits which these pages and your memory bring to mind. To the Class which preceded us we speak of in reverence. It is through their pioneering a great share of the credit this Annual may deserve, rightfully belongs. The success they attained is our aim. To those who have given of their knowledge, time, work and personality to the molding of our characters— our Faculty—we are deeply indebted. May they, too, share with us our happiness. The School Board and the Citizens who have made possible the privileges we have had in education by giving us such a marvelous edifice and uncomparable teaching staff, we do not know how to adequately thank. And our friends in the lower grades, we will always remember. It is they whom we wish to thank most heartily for the cooperation and help they have given us in making possible this Annual. —THE EDITOR I f-.'S N the course of our high school career a time comes when everything changes to our view, we have noticed in one way or another those PAGE FIVE DEDICATION Being Sincerely Grateful to Him Whose Quiet, Friendly Help Has Made It So Pleasant for Us in Our Sojourn Through School; to Him Who Has Given to the Fullest Measure for Our Benefit, We, the Class of 1927, Respectfully Dedicate This Volume to SUPERINTENDENT E. TURNBULL F L LARRY PAGE EIGHT The Board of Education HE present purpose of our schools is to prepare children, youth and adults to take a more efficient and active part in the other great social institutions, the family, church, government and business. Modern life depends for its existence and growth on how well this preparation is made. To be intrusted by the people with the guidance of such a work is no mean distinction. Such guidance should be in the hands of men whc are public spirited, intelligent, liberal minded and of broad experience with other men and business affairs. Education has been expanding and moving ahead rapidly under intelligent leadership. The Board of Education of Lapeer has had a broad vision of the educational needs of the city. The members have been big enough men not to listen to the whims, the complaints and criticism which come to everyone in public life, but they have had courage to steadily maintain a policy which has placed Lapeer educationally on the map. One of the most marked characteristics of this Board has been the harmonious relations which have existed among its members. Politics, partisanship or personal prejudices have never entered its deliberations. This has been the most important factor in its success. The present Board has seen this high school almost double in enrollment. The Junior High School organized, new departments added and the erection of one of the finest and mort modern high school buildings in the state. The individual members all have been long and prominently identified with the business and professional life of the city and have freely given of their time and energies in ether capacities. Dr. W. J. Kay and Mr. Kirk White have been continuously mcmLers of the Board for almost twenty years. Mr. A. C. Holland has been its efficient secretary for over a dozen years, Mr. Elgin Turnbull has served the city in many capacities as a member of the old City Council to the present time when he represents the city on the Board of Supervisors, Mr. F. L. Larry is serving his second term as mayor of the city, Mr. E. L. Paddison and Mr. E. T. White are among our younger, notedly successful business men. These men individually take a keen interest in school life and are making every effort to provide the best possible educational opportunities to our boys and girls. PAGE NINE PAGE ELEVEN E. E. PAGE TWENTY-FIVE PAGE Class History How can one express the pride with which our class, in September, nineteen hundred and twenty-three, entered High School? Did I say High School? Well, perhaps, in one sense of the word -but not if you include the High School building in the meaning, because the building we were put in was the well-known chicken-coop an annex to the old High. We organized our class the first of the year with Harold Allen our president. Under Miss Wallace's sponsoring we had three parties that year a Bunco party in the annex, an interesting feature of which was a Christmas tree—it being a Christmas celebration, a party at Velma Reavely's home near Nepessing lake; and a sleighride, for which Marjorie Hubbell was hostess. In June school closed for the summer and the class was separated until September, when we again returned to school-life, but now in the new building. Again we chose Harold Allen as president. Our Sophomore year was not very active; we had two parties, one at Evelyn Baldwin's farm home, and the other in the Gym. That year, too, our boys were interclass champions in baseball. Another summer vacation intervened and in September, nineteen hundred twenty-five, we came back for our Junior year, which was a busy one. Kenneth Kerr was our president. Although there wasn't much social activity, attempts at a party were made several times. Finally the only Junior party we had was held at Kerr's cottage, at Nepessing lake. That year we presented the play, Lost—A Chaperon. It went over big, and as a result, we entertained the Seniors at one of the most successful J-Hops ever held in Lapeer. That year wc again won Interclass Baseball Championship, and also Boys Basketball. When school opened in the fall of twenty-six we hardly realized that we were returning for the last year of our High School career. Delmer Jones, president; Francis O'Brien, vice-president; Clara Butler, secretary, and John Wilson, treasurer, were our officers. Mr. Beach was sponsor, and Kenneth Kerr, business manager. Under this management several movies were put on in the auditorium, the proceeds of which were used to pay for the stage curtain which we, as Seniors, had decided to give to the school. Two parties were held this year, one, a Bunco party at Louise Turnbull's, and the other an Educational Party in the gym. Through our last three years in High School our class has had a liberal sprinkling of athletes in all major sports. In the State Championship football team our class was represented by the following men: Kenneth Kerr, Capt. Bob Connors (winner of Kirk White Memorial), Harry “Speed Bentley, Lawrence Roach, Hugh Newton, Francis O’Brien and Orville Watson. ....................................................................... 7=niiM art TWENTY-SIX In basketball last winter the following men were Seniors: Bob Connors, cap- tain; Harry Bentley, Aubrey Powell and Arthur Thompson; Kenneth Kerr acted as student manager. In girls’ basketball the Seniors were represented by Velma Reavely, captain; Clara Butler, Louise Turnbull, Dorothy Nicholson, Muriel Goodrich, Beula Robbins, Lois McGuire and Helen Diener. Also, four of the six debators were from our class namely: Eva Taylor, Hutton Schrader, Edward Jones and Catherine King. Last Will of Class of ’27 Friends and Parents, gathered here to witness our departure from this sphere of life, we appoint you as executors of this, our last will and testament, assured that you will see that it is properly carried out. Four long years, we, the pupils of Lapeer High School, have journeyed the rocky paths of knowledge, accumulating worldly goods. During the last five months, the Class of 1927, considering that it would be wrong to pass into the hereafter without enriching some of our dear friends, have appointed me to make this will, bequeathing unto those we leave behind such things as might be useful. Be it remembered that we, the Class of 1927, having at this time full control of our mental faculties, do make this, our last will and testament, revoking and annulling all other wills made by us either by word or in writing. First—To the gay-hearted Juniors, we bequeath the high honor of having the last eight rows of seats on the left hand side of the auditorium reserved for your use. We also leave you the task of setting a good example for the younger pupils. While not a hard task for us, we realize that it may prove to be one for our younger followers, the Class of 1928. Second—To the Sophomores, we leave nothing but our best wishes, for it is evident that if you continue your marvelous work, you will rise to illustrious fame, similar to that of Julius Caesar, Napoleon or the Duke of Wellington. Third—To the Freshman Class, realizing how great is your need for it, we bequeath our personal senior dignity. To the Superintendent and Teachers, who have shaped the course and policy of our school, we extend our hearty thanks together with a bond of friendship. The honorable Delmer K. Jones bequeaths his dignified and sophisticated manner to William Myers of the Junior Class. Charlotte Clark, our living skeleton, bequeaths her reducing secret to Irene Kollar and Beatrice Morey. To our friends and the janitors let us now give hearty thanks for the many favors shown us. I bequeath the long hours spent alone in the still of the night to compose this document to any Junior who is unlucky or lucky enough to be obliged to do the same. Certain members of the Class of ’27 bequeath, as a final clause, A’s received in Physics to the coming Physics class. If there should be any of our property remaining that we have not bequeathed, we leave it for our executors to use as they see fit. PAGE TWENTY-NINE PAGE THIRTY LAT PIERRE The Junior Class As we look back on our Junior year which is rapidly drawing to a close, we can't help but heave a sigh of relief that what is perhaps the most strenuous year of our high school life is almost at an end, and yet we regret too that we can be Juniors but once. Soon after school opened in the fall we organized our class and held our election of officers. Maurice Hill was chosen to be our president; Louise Thompson, vice-president; Ellen Holmes, secretary, and Carlton Van Wagoner, treasurer. The first outstanding event was a party held at Dorothy Jones' on November 12th, where everyone enjoyed themselves. Next we selected and ordered our class rings. At about the same time a girls' interclass basketball team was or-ganized to compete for the interclass cup which we won eventually. The team consisted of Louise Thompson, manager; Grace Gray, captain; Ora Baird, Beatrice Tru-do, Elaine McDowell, Frances Barnes, Margaret O'Brien, Beverly Beatty, Adelaide Fernea, Emily Francis, Regina Donner, Geraldine Gillett, Cleo Rowley and Dolores Tinder. Heretofore we had been known as “Not Bad, but the next event stamped us as exceptional, for our biggest undertaking, the Junior play, “Bab, was a great success. It was produced under the able direction of Mrs. B. F. Reed, and the students making up the cast were: Delores Tinder, C. Van Wagoner, O. Baird, M Hill, V. Russell, E. Francis, R. Taylor, B. Myers, C. White, E Holmes anil W. Graves. Its success has renewed our hopes of a trip in our Senior year. When the confusion of classifying and schedule arranging had died away a get-together party was held at which each member was introduced to his or her classmates. This party helped to establish a wonderful class spirit which has enabled the members to accomplish many things. Among the notorious deeds of this class was the winning of the class rush between the Freshman and Sophomore classes in the fall of 1925. In addition to this the class held a very successful party at Christmas time. Later in the year the Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs had a Minstrel show in which many of our class took part. On September seventh, school again started and the class—Sophomores this year—came back a little conscious that it was a year older and far wiser than the class of a year ago. With Miss Pacholke as sponsor the class was organized and elections held. In October the class rush was staged and the Sophomores were again successful in carrying off the honors. The “Freshies” were pulled into the river and the class colors, rose and silver, floated in victory from the top of the school building. December fifteenth was the night of a class party in the High School. After a lunch in the cafeteria everybody came back to the gymnasium to dance. The Boys’ and Girls' class basketball teams, under Maxwell Daniels and Elaine Hayden, did not win the championship, but they made a good showing. The class awarded a scarlet Soph” to the members of its teams. As Sophomores this class will soon cease to be. But as the members become Juniors and Seniors, they will try to keep up the good work carried on by the class this year and last year. The class rush was a great event, both classes winning the same number of points on the field, but the Sophomores won in the tug-of-war. Our boys’ basketball team showed great skill and was well supported by the class and the Freshman Band. Another great event was the boys’ basketball game between the Freshmen and Seniors for interclass championship. After playing three minutes overtime the Seniors won by one point. On December 10th the Freshmen had a highly enjoyable party in the High School gymnasium. In February the 8A's joined our class and increased our membership by about twenty. A fair sum of money was added to our treasury by a series of candy sales from January to March. We have four all A” students and a large number of “B students on the High School Honor Roll this year. One of the boys of the class was the yell leader at all the Varsity basketball games. One of the girls made the second team in basketball and played in three games. We feel we have a class to be proud of and one which will be interesting watch in the future. Gladys Alyca Grace Jones Birdie Taylor Pauline Allen Thelma Kelley Geraldine Supernault Alice Anderson F. The purpose of the club is to give the student glimpses of practical business problems such as he will encounter after leaving school, to help him in planning h s career and the best preparation for it, and in general to promote interest in business. The club this year has two main projects. One is to purchase a portable phonograph for the commercial department, and the other is a trip to the important industries and business enterprises of some nearby city, probably Flint. In financing these projects, the members have engaged in numerous hot-dog and candy sales yielding not only profit and experience, but also pleasure. PAGE FORTY-FIVE The Ushers Club The Ushers Club was organized at the beginning of the year of 1924-25. At that time twelve pupils who were considered best suited for the work were asked to join. Mr. Yaeger, who acted as sponsor, explained that the ushers were to keep order in the auditorium during assemblies and pep meetings, to usher at all events held in the auditorium, to take charge of the Master Key and the doors in the morning and at noon and to escort visitors through the building. The number is limited to twenty as this makes a very good working squad. There are two groups with a Head Usher for each group. By this method the work is evenly divided. Our aim is to give efficient and cheerful service and to keep perfect order, and we believe that we are doing our best to accomplish it. They also cooperated in publishing the High School News, a monthly magazine. The first number was issued the first of February. The club quota is twenty members and the vacancies were filled by vote. The club's greatest work is the establishment of a Code of Ideals which all members are supposed to follow during their High School career. They are as follows: 1— To serve the school. 2— To advance ideals for Home Economics. 3— To maintain a certain scholarship. 4— To advance good living and good thinking. 5— Tn establish good wise habits. The club met its various expenses during the winter by the sale of hot dogs in the corridors. The girls feel that they have profited very much by their year's experience in this active club and recommend it highly. The club is under the management of Miss La Plant. Gould, Jean, Pres. Meetings are held every Monday during the Home Room period. Most of the meetings are given over to the discussion of different phases of radio, and conducted by committees appointed for that purpose. Among the topics discussed during the year arc types of tubes, condensers, principles of loud speakers, and types of amplification. Due to lack of funds the club has been unable to experiment very extensively with radios, but individual work at home has been encouraged. The Browning-Drake receiving set started last year has been improved and a very efficient resistence coupled amplifier using Hi-mu tubes has been added. One of the important events of the season was the Washington address by President Coolidge which the club was able to give to the school through the kind assistance of Mr. Arnie Gillctt. At the beginning of the year the different committees were appointed by the president, Mr Coulter. They were the Program committee to look after the programs to be given every week, and an Activity committee appointed to look after the matter of outside work done by the Club, the Banquet committee appointed to look after the banquet held in February. In these various enterprises the members not only have the benefit of the speeches and articles themselves but also they get a bit of business training which is very necessary in any line of business, including farming. Later, when the teams were divided, the first three mentioned were placed on the Affirmative, and the last three on the Negative. The question under discussion was, “Resolved, That the U. S. Government Should Own the Coal Mines.” During the season our teams meet representatives of the following schools: Vassar, Durand, Imlay City, Oxford, Ortonville and Howell. To add to the glory of our teams, Marcia Cary and Edward Jones were chosen to represent L. H. S. in the subdistrict Declamatory and Oratorical contests, respectively. Marcia was not only successful in this and the district contest but she entered the state contest May 13 and won state championship. This is the first time in his-tory that Lapeer High School has been represented in the state oratorical contest. We arc, therefore, unusually proud of Marcia and the fact that she not only represented us in this contest but that she was able to win state honors. Of course we were all new at this kind of work but with Mr. Davey, who is more experienced along this line, at the head of the crew we were able to learn quickly. The stage is very well equipped for a high school. This makes it much easier for us. During the year we have made quite a lot of equipment ourselves. This work is very interesting and helpful to us. but like all kinds of work it is not all pleasant. The hardest job a stage hand has is to deal with others who may be on the stage without losing his temper at times. We hope the Stage Crew will continue their work for years to come so others may receive as much good from it as we have. Not since the good old days has Lapeer scored such a triumph. Two such games in a row constituted an insurmountable barrier. Bay City scored a decisive victory. The remaining games were won in handy fashion. Captain Kerr and his mates were nearing the final test: the game with Imlay City. Though doped to win, the team was not over-confident. Athletic Board of Control This board was organised to control Athletics in the schools. Its members consist of an alumnus, Mr Myers; the superintendent, E. E. Irwin; a school board member, Tom White; a member of the coaching staff, Mr. J. F. Yaegcr, a faculty member, Mrs. J. F. Yaeger, and two members from the student body. Due to the failure of having new elections the two students of last year are retained. They are Harold Black and Eleanor Thompson. Its purpose is to decide on the eligibility of the players; how many games can be played in the season, and who shall receive letters and numerals. They meet once a month and at any other time that the president may deem necessary. PAGE SIXTY-SEVEN PAGE SIXTY-EIGHT Girls Basketball On Nov. 10, 1926, the first call for the girls’ basketball team of '26 and 27 was heard. The first night of practice a very likely group assembled in the gym, numbering about 22 in all. Practice was held regularly up to Jan. 7, when Lapeer met their first opponent of the season, Orion, and defeated them by a score of 21 to 8. This overwhelming victory gave the team more courage and on the following Friday, Jan. 14, they met Oxford. This was a close game and both teams worked hard, but Oxford's efforts were mostly in vain because Lapeer won their second game by the close score of 16 to 15. On the 21st of Jan. every girl was ready to start for Vassar at about 5:30 p. m. They met their opponent, Vassar, on a very small floor but nevertheless Lapeer got into the fight and won again by a one-point lead of 5 to 4. Lapeer was beginning to think that one point was all that they could win by, when, fo! their great rivals Imlay” came over with their best of material ready to take the Gold and Blue through the game of their life, but they were wrong in their idea, for when the final whistle blew the score stood: Lapeer 24, Imlay 16. The following week the score mounted even higher when Lapeer beat Mayville by a score of 54-2. Even though this was an easy game the following week was not so easy when the A. C. Spark Plugs agreed to fill our open date of Feb. 11. The Spark Plugs were an independent team and for this reason everyone thought it useless of Lapeer to even try to win, but the members of the team disagreed with this statement, so they thought they would show the boosters of the team what they could do. Going on the floor with the “pep and fight with them they won by a score of 18 to 7. Then the last game of the season was to be played at Imlay, so the Gold and Blue team picked up their valises once more and took a journey over to Imlay. Even though no one really knew it they were to meet their first defeat of the season that fatal night of Feb. 18. The team didn't seem able to get in the game nor seem to be ready to play and the result was that they lost by a score of 16-11. Some of these games were play and some were work, but the team found it all play and no work when they were guests of their mothers at the Palace theater in Flint and then to dinner at the Y. W. C. A. cafeteria in the evening. This year's basketball girls: F'rst Team Velma Rcavcly, Captain Clara Butler Louise Turnbull Louise Thompson Emily Francis Muriel Goodrich Grace Gray Adelaide Fornca Beula Robbins Frances Barnes Second Team Helen Diener Lois McGuire Geraldine Gillett Delores Tinder Helen Metheney Dorothy Nicholson Regina Donner Besides the first ten girls mentioned above there was the second team girls who were very faithful and worked hard to help the first team, even though they knew they would have no chance to make the first team. The interclass basketball was won this year by the Class of '28. On May 20 the boys’ and girls' basketball teams of '27 were guests of the Commercial Club, at which time letters were presented to those who had played a sufficient number of quarters to entitle them to receive this honor.
