AERIE 1988 Lapeer East High School 933 S. Saginaw St. Lapeer, Michigan 48446 2 Opening Shaping Our Lives The years we spend in high school play an impor- tant role in determining the rest ot our lives. The things we experience in everyday school life teach us values and help us to form opinions of our own. In this yearbook we have tied together some of the things that cast the mold for the person we will be. When we're with friends we can be the person we really are, not pretending to be some- one we're not. Family members also influence us a lot. especially when they are around during school. The clothes and hair-styles we wear pro- ject something about the person we are and the person we are going to be. Current happenings allow us to form our own judgements about what goes on in the world around us. The way we spend our time after school also has a great impact on us. So twenty years from now when you look through this yearbook, remember the ways in which the years you spent at this school have shaped your life. Contents Opening........... 1 Homecoming .... 14 Seniors...........24 Juniors...........56 Sophomores .... 68 Freshmen..........80 Faculty...........92 Activities...... 106 Sports.......... 124 Advertising..... 148 Opening 3 4 Opening Friends During high school, friends are probably the most influential people in our lives. We spend most of our time either with them at school, or talking with them for hours on the phone after school. Some of them will remain close only while we are in school, while others will be life- long friends. When we are with our friends, we can be our- selves, because we know that they like us for who we are. Our friends also widen our hori- zons by getting us involved in things we wouldn't do on our own. Since this can be good or bad, choosing our friends well is one of the most important things we learn in high school. TOP: Left: Our Foreign Friends Center: Lisa Robinet and Jll Holman. With so many sets of twins, this is easy to understand. If having a twin, look-alike or not, can make things interesting, having your mom or dad at school really can. Having a family member at school can definitely have its disadvantages. Not only must you con- stantly behave , for fear of looking around the corner and seeing the face of your brother or sister, but you must always be reminded of life at home and your family. Aside from the bad things, a brother, sister, mom or dad can came in quite handy. When home- work assignments are forgotten, they always seem to remember. They will lend a helping hand when your day has gone badly. They are always around when you need a shoulder to lean on, or just a little push to keep your day moving. These things can be a rewarding part of anyone's life, and can also bring you closer. TOP Left: Marty and Kelly Russell. Center: East staff and chil- dren. Right: The Speck Sisters. Opening 7 8 Opening Trends Trends play a large part in our life, especially while we are in high school. Fashion trends are especially important since they determine what we wear, and that has a lot to do with how we feel, the image we project, and of course, whaf we look like. Here are a few of our favorite trends and trend-setters. Top Row Kristen Goetzinger Ores to crimp her hair. Every one admires John Smith's short haircut. Katie Gleason models her favorite wig. It not only changes the world we live in, but teaches us to deal with changes and forces that many times we cannot control. It also allows us to form our own opinions and values that will be with us for many years to come. On this page we have collected some of the current events that have affected our lives in 1987-1988. Circle Some of the most happening things in the world last year Opening 11 12 Opening After School There are many choices as to what to do after school each day. Many students have to stay, while others choose to, and still others leave as soon as the bell rings. As much time as we spend in school, what we do in our free time may reveal even more about us. It seems as if some students have a seventh hour, since they spend so much time in detention. Oth- ers only have to spend an occasional hour in the detention room. Be it from after school sports to clubs and band, many students spend a great proportion of their time in high school staying after. Many people just hang around after school and lots can be seen in the cafeteria of them playing cards or just socializing. Other people seem to be in a race to see who can get out the door first. To these people, what they do outside of school plays a more important part in shaping their lives. Opening 13 14 16 Homecoming Homecoming Spirit Spirit week aroused feelings of competition between all four classes the week before the big Homecoming Game. Even though it was very cold on Monday, students were deter- mined to dress as Hawaiians. On Tuesday best friends became twin brothers and sisters, and the college spirit was displayed on Wednes- day. Even though students could not bring weapons on Thursday, Cowboy and Indian day was a big success. Of course, green and gold were worn by almost everybody on Fri- day. The assembly to elect Homecoming King and Queen, was entertained by the popular Pow- der Puff Cheerleaders. The crowd participat- ed in class spirit competition and the singing of Victors, East's fight song. This year's homecoming court had a lot of fun presenting their version of The Family Feud , with their lovely host Ranna Right, alias Mrs. Rhykus. It was close, but in the end, the Belvin Hillbillies were defeated by the nerdy Gweebman family. The freshman representatives were Margaret Henson and Bob Dice, while the sophomore class was represented by Tracey Steward and Scott McKenna. Kim Inman and Dan Ruen were the junior class representatives, together again. The senior court consisted of Wendy Torres and Rusty Robinson; Aundrea Klamecki and Mike Smith; Jamie Markwood and Tim Huestis; Kelly Hartley and Kris Pietryga; Laura Henson and Gary Kinzer; and Diane Walker and Dan Rowley. The 1987 King and Queen were Diane Walker and Kris Pietryga. OPPOSITE PAGE: TOP RIGHT: Male members of the Home- coming Court CENTER LEFT: 1986 King and Queen, Kari Ruen and Kirk Knight. Homecoming 19 20 Homecoming Homecoming Parade And Powderpuff The 1987 Homecoming Float Theme was Su- perheroes. With construction every day after school, each class worked hard to complete their version of the theme. Seniors took everyone's favorite Superman and made him into Super Eagle , with all the qualities of Superman to break the Durand Railroaders in two. They won the Most Colorful Award, while the Juniors won the Most Cre- ative Award. They used imagination com- bined with current events to create Ollie North. Sophomores went back to the stone ages and brought back Captain Caveman to take the award for Most Theme Related. Ev- eryone was impressed by the Freshmen's dis- play of Mighty Mouse, including the judges who voted it Best Overall. Congratulations Freshmen! Homecoming was filled with anticipation as the Powder Puff Game began. The Senior team played hard to keep their undefeated reputation intact, but the Junior girls fought back to keep the score tied at 13-13, a first in East history. Homecoming 21 22 Homecoming Homecoming Game And Dance On October 9, 1987, the Lapeer East Eagles played the Durand Railroaders for the thir- teenth annual Homecoming Game. It was tied 13-13 at half-time. The Eagles fought a hard battle in the second half, but unfortunately, valuable player Paul Hunt was injured. Al- though they continued their efforts, to the last second. East was defeated 32-13. Saturday's Homecoming event, the dance, was a much happier occasion. Students, in- cluding the Homecoming Court, dressed up in their finest attire and had a wonderful time. OPPOSITE PAGE: TOP LEFT: The Homecoming crowd enjoys the game. First of all we would like to greatly thank our advisor, Mrs. Hergenreder, for the long, hard hours she's dedicated; and thanks to Miss Veillette whose help in sales, advertising, and photography is greatly appreciated. We would also like to thank Ken Drake, our Josten's representative, for being so understanding and having so much patience. Hick's studio, and their photographers, also deserve many thanks for donating their time and skills. Not to be forgotten are the many advertisers whose financial contributions insured our yearbook's success. Finally we would like to thank those staff members who worked endlessly night after night to make our deadlines; and congratulate ourselves on a job well done. U ' pO (AA V- 147 A Abbey.
