Senior Tom Trisch told a news reporter that Lapeer East was like Maximum Security High. The class of 1985 designed T-shirts with a Maximum Security High logo including an identification number that was actually their graduation date. The faculty at Lapeer East thought that the idea of T-shirts was great and proceeded to get their own with the word “guard” or warden as their identifi- cation. The class of 1986 continued the tradition with T- shirts of their own. Their Breaking Out shirts showed a new design. We’ll just have to wait to see what the class of 1987 does to carry on the Maximum Security High tradition. In Inter-County Chess League action, the team started with wins over Birch Run, Grand Blanc, and Clio. Led by the league's top-rated player, James Riseman, the squad expects to be a strong contender for both the league title and the State Championship. Seniors Mike Bosmc, Ron Dawson, Derek Anderson, and Tam Phung complete the varsity team. Individually, James Risemand has won the Tri-County High School Championship the past two years. He was the top sophomore in Michigan last year. Ron Dawson earned the top 12th grade award and Matt Dawson won the 9th grade award in the Tri-County. The season finishes with the National High School Championship held in Virginia in April. Last year’s team placed 22nd nationall. Activities 111 QUIZ BOWL fust row: Mike Bosmc. Lisa Collins. They are defending champs returning to the DeGrow- Times Herald National Qualifying Tournament. Activities 113 114 Activities 8 116 Activites This year's float competition was on Walt Disney characters. The seniors won with their float of Dumbo. This year the parade started at six. Both the cheerleaders and band members marched in the parade. There was no powder puff game, as there was in the past. The field was under water both times the game was scheduled. Finally when there was a good day for a game, the juniors forfeited to the seniors. Activities 117 118 Activities YEARBOOK STAFF First row: Bill Kinzer. The people on the yearbook staff work year round trying to get the yearbook finished on time. They stay after school almost every day working to all hours every night, especially the day before the deadline. The staff is made up of hard working students, and anyone who is dedicated can be a staff member. Hard at work! Activities 119 120 Activities Lapeer East is a very fortunate to have three groups of boosters that help to defray expenses. The Athletic Boosters run a weekly bingo as well as sell concessions at all athletic events and sponser an annual craft show to earn money. Among the many things provided by the group are two scholarships, athletic equipment, awards, and video equipment. The Music Boosters earn money through fruit and submarine sandwiches sales and Wendy's coupons. Buying music, paying for instrument repairs, trips, and providing awards are some of the ways the Music department uses the money. The Academic Boosters are a new addition. They have already been busy providing a recognition brunch and awards for students who perform well accountably. The group has sold East sports clothing and Hick's Photography coupons. The Boosters make it possible for students to have better opportunities athletically, musically, and academically. J___ Activities 121 'jjLlU. VARSITY TEAM RECORDS GOLF OPP. NAME OPP. Many offensive records were also broken and a season high of 38 points were scored against Lakeville. The team also had five second team All-Leaguers including senior quarterback Kevin Lomerson, junior running back and defensive back Gary Kinzer, senior guard Joe Coulter, senior linebacker, Jeff Nurenberg, and senior defensive end Craig McAllister. The teams most valuable player was Kevin Lomerson, the most valuable lineman was Joe Coulter, the most valuable back was Gary Kinzer, and the coaches award was given to Jeff Nurenberg. Although the loss of a strong senior class will hurt, 19 returning lettermen and an undefeated J.V. team should make up another strong team in 1987. Third row: Coach Bfuce Eckersley, Sandy Fox, Christy Ward, Amy Nurenberg, Barb DeVor, Amie Williams, After winning the Metro League last year, the girls Varsity Basketball team followed with a share of the title this year. There were many times when the game was won in the final minutes. After losing to Oxford at Oxford, the team roared back with fourteen straight wins. Included in that streak were wins against Oxford and Fenton at home. Behind great crowd support in the Oxford game, East won in the closing seconds. After being behind the whole game, East tied the game with fifty seconds left and finally won when Rachel Davis shot with two seconds left. Against Fenton, Rachel again made the winning shot with time running out. It was an exciting season. The seven seniors on the team have had a great career at East. In all the games that they have played at home, they have not lost; and in their four years of playing at East, they have only lost a total of six games, including a perfect J.V. season. Next year, the team will have its work cut out for them since they are losing seven players and a coach who is retiring. This year's award winners were Darlene Smith: top defensive player; Christy Ward: most-improved player; and Ann Ruiz: most-valuable player. Named to the first team All-Metro this year was Michelle Thompson. Mrs. Hess taught under the supervision of Mrs. Owen. She received her degree in business education from the Universi- ty of Michigan-Flint this spring. Mr. Rutledge taught U.S. History with Mr. Kinzer. He also graduated from the University of Michigan-Flint ready to teach both social studies and math. Miss Brown graduated from Central Michigan University in May with teaching certification in chemistry and mathemat- ics. Her teaching assignments were with Mr. Gormley and Mrs. Rykhus. Miss Erbisch, also from Central Michigan University taught health under the direction of Mr. Fisher and worked as an athletic trainer. We appreciated ' ' : building and hope that they will all enjoy working with students in the future. 01863068 WE’LL MISS YOU Mrs. Redmond Mrs. Sweeney Until recently Mrs. Redmond was Athletic and Internal Funds secretary — a big title tor a bigger job. Students found Mrs. Redmond answering questions early in the morning, sitting at the computer doing something” and accepting money for whatever was going on. She was always ready to play nurse, accept announcements for the P.A. and keep track of athletic inelgibility reports. These are just a few of the reasons Mrs. Redmond will be missed. Mrs. Sweeney has recently changed positions. With the title of Attendance Secretary, she was very involved with students. Many students dreaded the thought that Mrs. Sweeney might call home when they didn't come to school or if the note excusing their absence didn’t look authentic. They knew that she cared about them, but wasn’t a push-over when they were sent to the office for misbehavior. Students will miss seeing Mrs. Sweeney’s smile.
