The festivities planned for October 4th were preceded by many hours of hard work by Lapeer East students. The day began with the traditional Homecoming assembly. The class representatives and king and queen candidates were introduced. The entire student body was entertained by the powder puff cheerleaders and the skit “ Dance Fever”, performed by the candidates. The powder puff game was held immediately after school. The senior girls were rewarded for their many hours of practice with a 7-0 victory over the ambitious junior girls. 6 Homecoming Even with threatening storm clouds hovering on the horizon, it failed to rain on the 1985 homecoming pa- rade. Although the skies were dark, the music of the Lapeer East Marching Band, the enthusiasm of the cheerleaders, and the colorful floats lifted everyone’s spirits and prepared them for the football game. A victory was not within reach but the game was hard fought and well played. The festivities were concluded with the annual Homecoming Dance. The class council has been active during the year. The design of the graduation announcement was the first decision and perhaps one of the most important ones made by the group. The council presented a ballot for class members to choose the senior motto, song, flower, and colors. An after-game dance was organized to earn money for senior activities which included a spring banquet — a last chance to be together for an evening of fun. 31 Seniors Time is so short; These months go so fast. We’re here all together. Then we’re gone, never To be as one again. I look at all the faces Some bearing smiles Others deep in thought Eyes with a twinkle Or even a tear. A comforting look A knowing smile A triumphant glance A mischievious giggle. These are the memories Found in our hearts For the people we’ve Grown to love. The time is so short These months go so fast It’s hard to realize That these times will pass. And soon June will come With promises of the future; Baccalaureate, Commencement. We have so many friends here — We don’t want to leave. But we all must go on ... Time was so short; Those months went so fast. Tears well up inside; Senior year is now past. How can I tell them I love them all so? How can I thank t - m For the times I wi’ always remember? Time was so short; Those months went so fast. It’s time now for new things. Senior year is now past. God bless you and keep you Safe in His care, Thank you my friends For all being there. 32 Seniors Powder Blue (Class Colors) “Days turn to minutes, and minutes to memories. One of those special moments was the visit to the United States by British Royal Couple, Princess Diana and Prince Charles. A bright spot for the famine-ravaged countries of Northern Africa was the outpour- ing of aid from all over the world, including concerts by Live Aid and USA for Africa and a record We Are the World which brought in millions of dollars in aid. a Titanic Find Headlines 85 86 44 Seniors The Catastrophe in Mexico Martin Luther King was honored by having his birthday declared a national holiday. Celebrations were held in many cities in the U.S. Renovations on the Statue of Liberty continued with contributions from the American public. Plans for a celebration on July 4th are now being made. The Kansas City Royals surprised everyone with their comeback in the World Series. Pete Rose also made news when he broke Ty Cobb's hitting record. One former tragedy, the sinking of the Titanic has again made news with its discovery on the ocean floor. There is a darker side of the news also. We will miss the faces and talents of people like Yul Brynner, Orson Welles, Ricky Nelson, and Rock Hudson. Hudson’s death was caused by the relatively new disease Aids. Aids panic has struck the U.S. with young victims not allowed to attend school, blood donors fearing exposure and researchers working diligently to find a cure. Terrorists have made their mark with attacks on innocent victims in airports with several bombings. Apartheid in South Africa has been an issue around the world with the U.S. trying to influence its elimination. Some headlines of 1985-1986 were news for onlv a short time while others will Rock Hudson Seniors 45 Favorite Male Singer: Bruce Springsteen Favorite Female Singer: Sheila E. Hoffmann, Eric McAlpinc 3rd Row Robert Uy, Mike Bosnic, Lisa Collins, Jeff Street In an effort to give scholastic achievement some of the luster and social status usually reserved for sports, Lapeer East has become very active in the High School Challenge (Quiz Bowl) concept. Competition this year had involved appearances on WFUM (channel 28) Plus organized com- petition within the Flint Metro Academic League and in competition sponsored by Senator Dan DeGrow. This year’s team is made up of eight students who sur- vived two weeks of strenuous tryouts in October. Team members are: Captain Eric McAipine (10), Jason Hunt (9), Jason Booms (9), Mike Bosnic (11), Lisa Collilns (11), Robert Uy (11), M.J. Hoffmann (12), Jeff Street (12). In their first television competition in October, East de- feated a strong team from Grand Blanc by a score of 265 to 200. According to coach Dave Kirkpatrick, “You could not ask for a better group of students with whom to work. They are not only well disciplined students and learners but also highly motivated to perform to the best of their abilities. The Quiz Bowl format provides these mentatheletes a unique opportunity to exercise their knowledge.” Activites 125 Art Club 1st Row Gretchen Monville, Sephanie Porter, Maureen Mann, Sally Morris 2nd Row Ann Strucinski. Kirkpatrick Faculty 137 Mrs. Abi Warner Retires Mrs. Abi Warner, mother of three and grandmother of six, has recently retired as school nurse from the Lapeer Community Schools after twenty-five years of service. Mrs. Warner graduated from Harper University, and furthered her education at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Throughout her life she has seen many changes in Lapeer. In 1955, there were only one-room school houses consisting of one Junior High School, one high school, and Irwin Elementary. Later, Mrs. Warner observed the building of both Lapeer East and Lapeer West High School. Mrs. Warner is very proud of her three children, Meg, Sherry, and Rick. Her daughter, Meg, is a veterinarian, and her son, Rick, works for the Lapeer County Sheriffs Department, while her daughter, Sherry, prefers being a part-time teacher and spending time at home with her children. Mrs. Warner’s husband, Ron, retired as Assistant Superintendent in 1984. Mrs. Warner enjoys knitting, the domestic life, working as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society, and gardening. Throughout her career, her most enjoyable experience was teaching fifteen senior girls in a nurse’s aid course. Mrs. Warner has no immediate future plans; but she looks forward to taking many short trips. We would all like to thank Mrs. Warner for her kindness, and the contributions she has made to the Lapeer Community Schools. 138 Faculty Business Data Processing A. Owen S. Stearns E. Luzi W. When you reach for a dream, whether it’s in school, in sports, or on stage, you've got to be on your toes. That's why you should take a second look at marijuana and think twice before you smoke. New studies show that smok- ing pot can hurt your lungs much more than you think. If you're young and growing, it’s a lot more dangerous than you imagined. And a lot less cool. The freshmen took first place after defeating the juniors in the tug-of-war, leaving the juniors in second place. The sophomores came in third. Because Field Day had to be rescheduled due to Mother Nature’s interference, the seniors had already finished classes and only a few seniors participated. Due to the rule providing for each participant to compete in only two events, the few seniors present enjoyed the competition, but placed fourth. Everyone had a great time! 2 Field Day Senior Activities The Senior Banquet and Swingout are two optional activities available for graduating seniors. The banquet was an informal party. The cafeteria was decorated in powder blue and violet, the senior class colors, while red and white carnations brightened the tables. Following dinner, entertainment was provided by class members. Angie Mathenia and Annette Perry sang and a group with lead singer Rich Coulter performed a humorous song which they composed. The seniors capped off their evening with dancing. Swingout allowed the seniors to proudly show off their caps and gowns, a sign of having completed high school. The Class of ’86 cut and wired cedar boughs to the swingout rope. At six o’clock on the evening of May 29, the seniors, dressed in their caps and gowns and led by the marching band and their class officers, proudly walked through downtown Lapeer. Senir Activities 3 “Always and Forever” One hundred sixty-two couples attended the beauti- fully decorated Davison Country Club on May ninth for the annual Junior-Senior Prom. The theme for the magical evening was “Always and Forever.” Everyone loved the lavendar and silver helium balloons which decorated the ballroom. The Junior class provided the Senior class with a terrific and fun-filled prom which will remain in their memories “Always and Forever.” Graduation Thursday, June 5, 1986 was the day when two hundred thirty-eight seniors anxiously awaited their cue, while their proud parents, relatives, and friends sat in the Lapeer East Gymnasium ready to witness graduation ceremonies. The speakers this year included Mr. Gerald Brackney, Mr. Dan Russell, and Superinten- dent Jack McCauley. Mr. McCauley reminded the sen- iors that not only were they unique as individuals, but also as a class. The Class of 1986 was the first class to take the competency tests and the last class that could not wear shorts to school. Mrs. Rykhus, Senior Class Advisor, called the seniors’ names as they re- ceived their diplomas. After Mr. Fell’s last good-bye, the new graduates marched from the gym ready for the new ad- ventures ahead. Graduation 5 Varsity Baseball First Row: Rich Castaneda.
