Willett, for his kindness and con- sideration, we, the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Forty-nine, gratefully dedicate this t'Odyssey. ALMA MATER Alma Mater L. H. S. Fondest thoughts with thee do rest, Seareely can our song express Our love for thee. All the treasures that you hold, Treasures liner far than gold, You gave us to have-to hold, Dear L. H. S. Alma Mater L. H. S. Though the years take us from thee, Faithful to thy memory We will always be. Ever at thy shrine welll sing lVords of grateful offering, Our hearts throb while memories cling Dear L. H. S. BARBARA SMITH Editor-zfn-Fhief EDITORIAL The greatest factor, outside of the home and the church, that has the in- fluence on the individual student is the school. Looking back, more than likely, you can remember every teacher under whom you have ever studied. Teachers irnbue their pupils with a sense of good citizenship and fair play. The President of the United States may lead the citizens of this country but the teachers of the United States mold those citizens. This task of making citizens is a most important one and it is entrusted to the school. If the teachers keep this trust, hold it high, protect it faithfully, then surely our democratic principles will remain supreme and no doctrine of fascism or communism will ever be able to cause their downfall. On behalf of the class of nineteen hundred and forty-nine, I would like to propose a vote of heart-felt thanks to our teachers, the faculty of the Lansing- burgh schools. In the years ahead may we, their students, prove that We have heard their teachings and be good and true citizens, ardently upholding right and fervently opposing wrong. DANIEL WARREN Class President PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE Today we reach a milestone along our highway of life. As a class we conclude our high school career, and as individuals we prepare to move on to new fields of interest and activity. For three years we have been together in high school. Now we go our separate ways. Some will go on in higher education and professional training. Others will make their start in the business World. Probably all of us will never be together again as we are today. Time and circumstance will scatter us abroad as leaves Hy before the wind. But cherished memories of L.H.S.-good times at 'Burgh, friendships formed, sound scholastic preparation-all these, and many others, will remain with us throughout our lives to keep us close to one another. We wish to thank Mr. Wheeler, Wilson and the Faculty for their many kindnesses. They have been patient with us, they have tried to under- stand our problems, they have been interested in our activities, and they have sought to direct our aspirations in healthful and helpful channels. We hope that time will prove that their faith in us was not misplaced, and that the time and effort they expended in our behalf was not wasted. We wish to thank our parents for the sacrifices they have made to further our education, for the generous care they have bestowed upon us, and for the loving concern they have in our future welfare and happiness. With deep sincerity we say to them, t'Thanks for a job well done. Future: Undecided. -- THE I949 ODYSSEY -l NCUJCUD D The 1949 Odyssey CLASS HISTORY Four years of being together as a class have made many memories of fun and work. Now it's all over. We have in our hearts and minds all these precious memories that will live with us forever. Remember how we began these four years of sweat and toil? Frannie Corri- gan was our president and directed the affairs of Knicks with Elsie Hayner's able assistance. Marilyn Richmond wore out four pen points taking notes for her Secretary's book, while Erye Hayncr's clothes were eyed suspiciously for fear our dues had bought them. Marilyn Law and Trent Furgeson enriched them- selves by fifteen dollars by being smart and winning the scholastic awards. The merchants of Troy had higher taxes because Audrey De Smidt and John Lavery won fifteen dollars apiece in the speaking contest. The Stardust Soiree with Herbie Pickett's band made our Prom a wonderful memory. Pat Nial was so lovely she was crowned queen. Our year in the red brick schoolhouse ended with shaking knees and thumping hearts. Graduation was a frightening but wonderful thing. Of course, our poise had improved by the time we reached the famous Lansingburgh High Schoolg still our teeth chattered a little at the thoughts of our initiation? Hey! What goes on here? There's a big hole in the floor. Well, well. XVe had trouble recognizing the people we knew. All the girls were wearing their lipstick in lumps, all over their faces. The fellows were racing buses to reclaim shoes and the telephone company thanked us for the rope of belts but assured us they could get along without it. The screams of the tortured were terrific. We had arrived at Burgh. When the red and green paint faded, we recognized our president, George Herring. Erye Hayner must have been honest with our Freshman dues because she Was Vice President. Kappy lVhitc bought a pencil sharpencr so her pencil would be sharp for writing her secretary's notes. Norma Donohue and Carmen Di Dominico took commando courses in how to extract dues from unwilling Sophomores. What talent in this class! Our assembly minstrel show will never be forgotten. VVe had enthusiasm too. Our girls won Sports Night from the terrific Junior and Senior girls and ended our Sophomore Year in a blaze of glory. After our ordeal of being Sophomores totherwise known as the 'tunderdogsnj we entered our Junior year with joy as we bestowed upon the incoming 'tsophs the same treatment we remembered so well. But soon we found ourselves knuckling down to our studies and shortly after this we began enjoying our class meetings. Under the capable leadership of Carmen Di Domenico, class presidentg Jack O'Donnell, vice president, and Dan Warren, secretary, our meetings were most successful. No one envied treasurers Elsie Hayner and Marvin Zeph who had to keep reminding us about our dues, and then had to try to collect them. Joan Connor and Don Shields were our Athletic representatives. It was a happy day When we received our beautiful class rings, which we displayed with great Lansingburgh High School pride. The ring committee headed by Vic Schott did a fine job! Soon plans were being made for our Junior Prom, and at the first committee meeting, Erye Hayner and Jack Curley were chosen as Co-Chairmen. After all the planning and work, the finished product was a wonderful Junior Prom that we'll be remembering for a long time. Elsie Hayner, Erye Hayner, Norma Donohue and Audrey De Smidt were the Class Marshals. Our class was very proud of them and of Marvin Zepf, who set aside his witty remarks for five minutes at Class Day exercises, and received the key in the Key Oration . And so our Junior year endedg we now had three down and only one to go . Coming back to school in September we looked around and suddenly realized that there were no students above us, and that we were no longer 'tthe middle man , or the Hunderdogu. Dan Warren became our hard-working president, while Ronny Dupree stood by to lend a helping hand. Popular Norma Donohue was our secretary, while Barbara Smith and Vic Schott found out what it was like to get six dollars from every senior. Two of our favorite athletes, Joan Connor and Duke Bebernitz, were our athletic representatives. In November, the faculty chose Barbara Smith as Editor-in-Chief of the ODYSSEY and Audrey De Smidt as Assistant Editor. With the appointment of the editors and their com- mittees, the little beavers began their respective jobs with great enthusiasm. Beacon editions were unsurpassed under the excellent leadership of the Hayner twins. In the annual American Legion Speaking Contest, Maryanna Reed won the school prize and received second place in the County contest. Another honor was placed on our class when Mary Durivage won the city-wide high school essay contest on the New York State Law Against Discrimination. Maryanna and Mary earned both our admiration and respect. At the Dramatics Club semi- formal, Pat Nial was chosen queen. When June came around and you saw many heads gazing at the calendars and counting the days, you could be sure they were Seniors. We looked forward with anxious hearts for the awaited day of graduation, but with grievous hearts for the thought of losing touch with so many of our friends. But we knew one thing, that we would never lose touch with the cherished memories of dear old Burgh. CLASS POEM As we leave the thoughts of our sehool days To whieh we shall c-'er have aeeess, There are three words we should renieniber Whieh will help us gain our sueeess. The first of these is eourage W'hieh we'll need to fave despair, lYe must have it if we will go forward In this world so full of eare. The second one we shall eall patience Which we need for the long, trying hours Of work or play that engages Each important day of ours. W'it is the third to remember In eaeh thing we do and we say, We niust have it for all our relations lVith persons of shrewd repartee. As we students go out of the schoolhouse And into life's pattern are knit, We are sure that we will be notieed For our courage, patienee, and wit. As I sit here thinking of the happy days I spent as principal of dear old Burgh, I begin to wonder what has become of all the graduates. Ah, let me see-here are some old Beacons: what have we here? Why, of course, the ODYssEY-Forty-seven, forty-eight, and yes, here's the ODYSSEY of the Class of forty-nine. My, what a wonderful class they were! Why right here in the newspaper in front of me is a picture of Dan Warren. Little did I know he would be a famous surgeon at the Walter Reed Hospital. And right beside him is Jack Curley, who is president of the American Medical Association. My, it's 6:00 o'clock already. I must hear the news announced by the famous commen- tator, George Jones, on Station B.U.R.G.H. Then I'll hear Connie Fortin who is part of popular Mr. and Mrs. program. Do I hear the telephone ringing? It must be fixed. It's lucky for me that Neil Arsenault is president of the Bell Telephone Company. That was Maureen Brennan, secretary of L. H. S., on the phone telling me that John Page, president of the Burgh Alumni and owner of the Piping Rock at Saratoga, is coming to see me this evening. Itls nice to relax with the newspaper! Ronald Dupree, the famous DA. of New York City, has made the headlines again. Ronald Purdy, feature writer for the Herald, has done a wonderful article on Joan Connor, 'twoman of the year, as U. S. star at Olympics. Here's a picture of Mary Durivage at a meeting. She is now Dean of Russell Sage and author of the best seller 'tForever My Family. There goes Marvin Zepf down the street in his big black car. Yes, we can rely on Zepf Hthe Zippy Undertakerf' Yes dear, you can have the theater section in a moment. You're as bad as our teen-age grand-daughter who talks incessantly of Reid Bissell the Hollywood star. And did you see that Joan Schrager is a Broadway sensation in the play titled t'Love in Any Month of the Year ? Here, dear, you may have the theater section now. I want to look at the television for awhile. That Talent Show is on. Look--there's Shirley Anderson singing Carmen, I knew she'd be successful. I hear that Ernestine Smith is also doing very well on television as a ballet dancer. I think I'll change this station and hear Town Meeting. Oh yes, there is the lovely moderator Audrey DeSmidt, well known scientist. What did you say dear? The U.N. meeting is on channel 9? Just a minute and I'll switch stations. Here it is. There's John Quigley, Secretary General and his secretary Ann Cunniff. And look at Barbara Smith! You know, she has taken Mrs. Roosevelt's place as one of our delegates to the United Nations. That's enough television for awhile. Think I'll turn on the radio. We don't use it very much since television is so clear. Listen, don't you recognize those voices? The first speaker was Kenneth Wilsley, who has invented a new line of jet-propelled railroads. The man who is speaking now, I know is LeRoy Foster, who is a research chemist at the Cluett and Peabody Laboratory. Speaking of science--did you know that Robert Bohrer is a pro- The 1949 Odyssey fessor of chemical engineering at R. P. I.? And just the other day I heard that Merrill Gendron received an award from the president because of his discoveries of so many everyday uses of the atomic bomb. And I was really astounded and proud when I read that James Hoffman has won the Nobel Prize for his achieve- ments in World Peace. Answer the doorbell, will you, my dear? It must be John Page. I can't wait to hear the news that he is sure to bring me about the Class of '49. I'm sorry I was late Mr. Wheeler, but on the way over I stopped in the Twogood Candy Shoppe. Ramona told me she is buying a newly constructed circular house from Nancy Kirchner's Real Estate Agency which handles most of Troy's real estate business. It's out on Northern Drive on the same street where Kappy White's ideal home is. It was featured in Better Homes and Gardens last month. Well, John, with the Saratoga racing season just over, you must have been thrilled when your bet on the two entries Nip and Tuck from John Herkert's stables won the Daily Double. John's horses are Winning fame and fortune for him. You bet that was a thrill. Now 'Piping Rock can get her face lifted. I called Leona Zackest in New York to do the interior decorating. Did you know I had Eileen Kilgallon for a week this summer as guest star before she returned to Broadway to star in the musical hit 'tKiss Me Eileen? She's sensational! 'tWould you care for a cigarette John? These cigarettes are a new brand put out by Robert Lull, whose slogan is 'In between lulls, smoke a 'Lulf Pretty catchy I'd say! I met Helen Bleakley the other day downtown. She is the new manager of Stanleyls. Yes, both Helen and Shirley Gottschalk, who is at present manager of the Knitcraft, have advertisements in the Beacon this issue. 'tDirectly across the street from the Knitcraft, Howard Toftegaard has es- tablished a fine watch business. 'tWith many of the Class of ,49 scattered throughout the country, John, I was surprised to see Rose Mary Sans, who is married and lives in Kokomo, Indiana, at the Alumni Banquet last night. I also saw Joan La Frenier, she just returned from her third trip around the world. She was wearing the latest Paris fashions. The society column of the Troy Record, written by Pat Price, mentioned that the socially known playboy, Harold Connor, has won the heart of the beautiful movie star Marilyn Richmond, who by the way, is the rage of Holly- wood. One of the reasons for Marilyn's success has been the fine coaching she got from Charles Hartnett. 'Speaking about Hollywood, I hear that Joan Ashdown and her sisters are singing at Club 49 featured as 'The Ashdown Sisters' And Sally Carroll just signed a contract to replace Judy Canova on stage, screen, and radio. They say Lansingburgh High School that Dot Remington is going to be on the program, playing the guitar and singing. I can't mention Hollywood without telling you about the 'Click Movie Chain' owned and managed by Rita Clickner. Her theaters are very modern. They even have esealators! One of my grandchildren just flew back from Paris and she said she met a very nice stewardess on the plain. When I asked her who, she said Elsie Hayner. Elsie said that her sister Erye Hayner was head director and fashion critic at Hattie Carnegie's Salon. She flew over on a Pan-American plane and returned on the Millington Airlines. She made connections through the office in Paris directed by Joan Fonda. She met some lady on the plane who told her that the next time she goes to Paris she should go by boat because Joan Elder is the interpreter on the French Luxury Liner. Speaking of trips, I dropped down to New York two weeks ago and saw the best floor show at the Stork Club with Lorraine Filson as leading lady. J Do the students still take that annual Washington trip? You say they do, and this year the highlight of the trip was getting to hear Suzanne Bain, first woman senator from New York, debate the question, 'Should We Allow Our Students to Park Their Heliocopters on the School Roofs?' On the way back they stopped in New York and heard Samia's Swing Band of which Gladys Samia is the publicity agent. You say while in Washington they got a chance to meet Carmen DiDomenico, head of the F.B.I.? And in New York the girls met Barbara Dippo, a Conover Model? Well, that trip must have been very suc- cessful. Talking about models, I hear that Marcia Young is a photographer's model right here in Troy. I saw her picture in the paper the other night. The Class of '49 is scattered all over the world but there are still a lot who live in Lansingburgh and Troy. Barbara .Ianak is Supervisor of Nurses at the Leonard Hospital, Norma Donohue told me. Norma's husband is the famous doctor who is leading the fight against cancer. And the Burgh faculty is now composed almost entirely of '49 graduates. Barbara Schoonmaker is music teacher for the Lansingburgh school system, Connie Taplin is the school nurse. Before coming to Burgh shc was employed by Francis Corrigan as a Navy Nurse aboard ship. Admiral Corrigan has recently been appointed head of Anapolis. Duke Bebernitz and Victor Schott are coaching basketball and football. They' have been with us ten years now and as fantastic as it sounds, we haven't lost a single game in those ten years. Joyce Middlebrook taught Hygiene for two years but she got married in '56 and she wrote the best seller 'XES.' Spelled back- ward, hmmm? f'Joyee MacAllister's husband is the school doctor. She met him in New York when she was in nurse's training. l'Those kids have done a lot for Burghi. Did you know that Don Shields and Ted Singleton are thinking of buying The Diner. Don is athletic director of the Troy Country Club and Ted is managing the Bijou. They both have given me passes to go to the Club or the movies. I saw Tom I-Iunziker Wednesday, when I was at the Club golfing. He owns the Troy Tucker Taxi Service. Olive Bethel was there too. She is fencing instructor at Emma Willard. We have two from the Class of '49 at Emma Willard now, as Barbara Zimmermann is the elocution teacher there. The 1949 Odyssey The class of forty-nine has become prttty successful. It has taken all kinds of jobs and with no regard to sex, for here in Maxine Simons' editorial on promi- nent- people in Ladies Home Journal she speaks of Pat Nial who is now U. S. Ambassador to Denmark, and along with Pat's prominent position is Ray Cook, now the New York State Senator. I'm glad all the new magazines have come today. I saw Janet Brandtls picture in Country Gentleman with her enterprising dairy farming husband. When I went out to get the magazine Sally Bristol walked by with her husband who was wheeling little Dalton. Dalton Sr. is manager of Henry Requate's farm. The new Vogue is out and Alice Carroll is doing a wonderful job of editing it. Woman's Home Companion featured the wedding anniversaries of those two good friends, Jean Quackenbush and Toots Garland. .Ioan Gentner was with her Five Star General Eddy, then in from Washington for the anniversary. .llodern Mechanics carried an advertisemgnt for the Willy's Cars Inc. which is now owned by Joan Gontier's husband. I see here in Fashion that June Hansen and Jane Ives have a very fashion- able J. dr J. Dress Shoppe. Ethel Hansen's picture was in Country Gentleman for her prize winning mince pie. The Saturday Evening Post had Marilyn Law's cover on it this week. She and Norman Rockwell alternate. Speaking of Jack Willi, his sister Joan is becoming very wealthy with her summer resort at Lauder- dale. It says here in the Medical Journal that Barbara Thomas, head nurse at the Mayo Clinic, is mentioned in Nobel Peace Work. Isn't it wonderful Mary- anna Reed won the Nobel Peace Prize. She always was brilliant. Jack O'Connell was in to see us the other day. My that boys is graceful! He is owner and instructor of Arthur Murray's dancing school now. Trent Fer- guson came down to Burgh from from Sun Valley, for the weekend, where he is head skiing instructor. He said he traveled by way of yacht, and had met Marilyn Murray, who is running her charm school in Florida. She said she met Red Gallagher, who is vacationing at Bermuda. On her last trip she met Jean Parson who is also busy at her beauty salon for girls who are not lucky enough to have red hair like hers. Betty Wheeler and her husband, an R. P. I. instructor are next door neighbors to Mr. and Mrs. Lent who are running a boarding house for R. P. I. students. Unlike some of her renowned classmates Lois Magee has stayed at home and has become a social worker and advisor to her church youth group. Along with Lois, Evelyn Piser goes hand in hand for Evelyn is now the lovely wife of one of the town ministers. The other day Jerry Seith stopped in to see me. She is now running com- petition to Millington's airline. She said that just the other day the Washington Socialite Jeannette Shirley was a passenger on one of her planes. Along with Jeannette was Butch Weaver who was an outstanding pitcher for the Yankees and now has a place in his honor in the Baseball Hall of Fame. HA few of our Burgh alumni are living down in Albany, Kay Sweeney is on the Board of Regents and Marge Gleason is dean of Albany Law School. NVhile Lansingburgh High School I was out shopping the other day I stopped in VVoolworth's and bumped into Evelyn Hyde who owns it now. She told me that Elsie Mazanti owns the chain of Mazanti grocery stores. While I was standing there talking to Evelyn I heard some people talking about Alice Suchecki and George Herrings' foundling home, and of all things these people turned out to be Lois Gent and Shirley Frost. Lois is the new manager of the Troy Business College and Shirley was telling us she is the buyer of cosmetics at Russik's. She said she met Leo Mousseau the other day in New York. He is one of the talented cartoonists for the Hearst Syndicate. 'Tm happy to say I received a letter from Ronald Lee recently, who is hap- pily married out in Arizona. Living quite near by is Sally Rafter who is suc- cessfully managing her dude ranch. Staying at the ranch is Lois Merchant, well known career girl and Selene Wilcove who is now proprietress of the Salome Dress Shop. Among the people out west is Jean Wilcox, who has gained great fame for her decorations of so many Hollywood homes. I hear that Robert Gardner is an owner of a chain of Gasoline Stations along many miles of our western highways. Also out west is Arthur Requate, who is president of the Houston National Bank. Oh, here comes my little grand child. She is very happy today because her sick puppy is now well again, thanks to the care given it by Dr. Paul Rasmus- sen. He is an excellent veternarian. That reminds me. Another member of the class of '49 has made someone in my family happy. That is John Weigner. He sold my daughter a new electric dust cloth and she loves it. One of my grandchildren was telling me the other day how much fun she has up at Carroll's Grove since George Newland has been doing the 'callingf 'tMy, that voice on the radio sounds familiar. It should, since Shirley Nichols is doing the commercial for the fSpencer Concern' for suspenders that suspend. Robert Spencer is president of the company. Bob is also sponsoring Irma Rogers' Program 'Handy Hints to Housekeepersf And so, after just few years, the class of forty-nine has gained a great renown and is steadily going forward. THE END The 1949 Odyssey THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT We, the remarkable and magnificent class of nineteen hundred and forty- nine, having completed four wonderful years and having amazed everyone with our unusual talents and progressive ways, do hereby bequeath the following titles and honors to our worthy successors: Marilyn Richmond leaves her title of 'tSenior Sophisticaten to Mary Lou Treharne. A TRACK TEAM The scores of the first three track meets were: L.H.S. vs. Saratoga 48-47, Troy High 545-405, Catholic High 785-105. By the first few scores it could readily be surmised that the track team would have a very successful year. This was due to the fact that the nucleus of last year's team, who were Principal League Champions, was back along with some good Members of the team were: Ron Dupree, captai Chuck Hartnett J ack Quigley Fran Corrigan Don Gallagher Louie Van Wie Don Peterson Don Seymour Fred Jeavons George Lambertsen I1 Ron .lcnsen Byron Prahn Chuck Arzoumanian Ferd Van Dcurson George Woods .lack Beck Rudy Nichols Bob Spenser Ed Lawton Paul Beyer L new material. .lim Brandt Bill Wallace Harvey Gardner Jim Shipe Ed Duncan Elvin Cook Don Stewart Bill Zapp Joe Gallo, manager Lowell Lawrence, coach BASEBALL Although this year's team is composed mostly of new players, Mr. Buscall has done much to develop their skill. 'Burgh allowed an average of only 34.5 points to bc scored by opponents while making 44.7 per game. Dan Warren led our high scorers with 236 points in eighteen games, an average of 13.2. Tom Collopy followed with 219 points in nineteen games, an average of 11.5 per game. In the Section 2 Class B finals played with Saratoga High held at Conven- tion Hall in Saratoga, 'Burgh came out as victor and champion with a score of 50-36.
