I Presidenfs Message It seems just yesterday that we first entered the modern Knicker- backer Junior High School where we were among the first to enjoy the privileges of a great new school. We were the first class to spend three years in the new building where we l1ad the pleasure of using modern equipment supplied by the people of Ii2U1SlIlQQlJllI'gll. After grad- uating from junior high we came to these more mature halls where real high school life was presented us. In tl1e past three years we have made many friends both among the faculty and student body. Although our school days were those of companionship and understanding the world without was one of hate and misunderstanding. From the one hundred and Hfty students which graduated from Knickerbaeker Junior High our class has dwindled down to a little over one hundred. Tomorrow we will receive our displomas and go forth into life. Few classes have graduated into a more turbulent life. Knowing the spirit of the Class of '43 I know we will do our share as we go into life, some of us in the armed services, others as business- men and others in war plants. I know the spirit will still be there and I can assure you we won't let you down. FRANCES ADAMS A sport Of sports. You can be sure Franny's name will always head the list when it comes to sports. National Honor .Yociety The Lansingburgh Chapter of the National Honor Society accepted into its membership twenty members of the Senior class on May 17, 1943. They were tapped, presented, and accepted into the Society for outstanding leadership, character, and service to the school. Helen Wiley presided in the absence of Leonard Humphreys, last year's president. The speaker for the occasion was Lieut. Arnold Mealy who related l1is experiences on a United States destroyer in its travels in the North Atlantic and South Pacific. After the exercises, Virginia Filkin was elected President and Ran- sen Gardenier, Secretary of the new chapter. Following the exercises, Lieut. Mealy, the faculty, and the new members attended a tea given by the Adelphian Society. .7he fidebzhian .fociety 1943 has been another successful year for the Adelphian Society under the sponsorship of Miss Nivison, Miss Howe, Mrs. Barnard and our president, Virginia Filkin. The year was started by the election of the following officers: Eileen Hooley, Vice Presidentg Mary Pappas, Secretary, and Pauline Connally, Treasurer. In January, Miss Howe, one of our sponsors was married and moved away from Lansingburgh. However, her place as adviser was filled by Mrs. Barnard, who, with Miss Nivison has helped the Adelphian Society to complete a year filled with many activities. February 12th, we held a Heartbeat Dance in the gymnasium with Chuck Therrien and his orchestra. At our March meeting, Miss Cohen from Russell Sage, spoke to us on college life. Beacon During the past year, thc Beacon'l has had two faculty advisers, Miss Mildred Larson and Mrs. Delilah Goodrich. Both teachers have done equally fine jobs in aiding the editor in managing the affairs of the paper. Miss Larson transferred to a different school in January, leaving behind her a fine systcin for making each issue better and more interesting. Mrs. Goodrich assumed this position after Mrs. Larson left and she brought with her innovations which added more appeal to the Beacon, The war also had its effect on the paper, making supply materials difficult to buy and typewritcrs more scarce since many used by the Beacon typists were sold to tl1e government. J. Daniel O'Connell headed tl1e staff as Editor-in-Chiefg Bernard F. Schlesinger was Assistant- Editorg Edna Mattoon, Publications Editorg Edna Hull, News Editorg and William O'Brien, Photography Editor. .Library Club lllc- IJl'llIl2ll'f' 11111151150 ol tlw l,1lm1':11'y Q lub is to gin- svivivv to tllc Svlllllll. SfLHlh'2'L Jzwqllc- 1' sclloul Lansingburgh High School Class History In class histories of the past, each class has commended itself on being one of the best classes to spend its high school years in the halls of L. H. S. It can now be told, without boasting, that the Class of 1943's record and standing have excelled all others. Freshman Year The Class of '43 was the first freshman class to complete three years at the Knickerbacker Junior High School. The class held its election in October and Walt Connors was elected president. Two dances were held that yearg one in January and one in June. The biggest event of the year was the very successful June Prom, under the guidance of Miss McKeown. It was in this year that our athletes began to distinguish themselves on field and court. Bill Goldsberry earned the title of being the deadliest tackler in the area. Ray Nielson, Ran Gardinier, Walt Connors, and Lincoln Marzello played junior varsity basketball. On the baseball team we placed Bill Goldsberry and on the track team Frank Carlino represented our class. The school activities for the year closed with a field day and picnic at Knickerbacker Playground. A class precedent was estab- lished this year in the giving of diplomas at the graduation exercises in June. Sophomore Year A bright sunny day in early September 1941 brought courageous sophomores to the steps of L. H. S. Keeping together in small bands of tens and twelves, these unafraid sophomores were determined to show the upperclassmen that they had no fear. They stated that this year the seniors would not initiate sophomores as they had done in the years before. But, as we marched into the auditorium, we gave the appearance of painted Indians with our clothes in great disarray and in tatters. We hoped this wasn't a sample of what the next three years in L. H. S. were going to be like. We started early with our class activities and Lincoln Marzello was elected president. In this same year the Sophomore Hi-Y was started. This was the first time that the Hi-Y clubs were divided according to their classes. George Ives was elected president. In athletics we continued to excel, placing men on all the teams in school. Our class team won the championship in basketball by defeating the freshmen and seniors in hard fought battles. At Christmas time the annual Christmas party was held with the sopho- mores taking care of the decoration. Our Sophomore Year Book was successfully completed, sponsored by Miss Reynolds and edited by Sally Burgess. It was decided to have our class picnic at White's Beach. We had our picnic the same days as the juniors and closed our sophomore year with a swell time, looking forward to the fall when we could continue the tradition of initiating the new sophomores. The 1943 Odyssey Junior Year ln our junior year there were many activities. In class elections held in the early part of the school year, Ransen Gardinier was elected president. It was, as in past years, decided to buy our class rings. The ring committee headed by Marcia Law, selected rings which were voted on by the class. The annual junior prom with the seniors as guests, was held May 23, with much success. It was in this year that our athletes really distinguished themselves. Walt Con- nors was named on the All-City football team. Conrad Hofelich and Ned Mar- tone also saw much action on the team. The basketball team which was made up largely of juniors, Jack Fisher, Ransen Gardinier, Walt Connors, and Lincoln Marzello, won the New York State Public High School League Championship for the eastern district. The baseball team also numbering many of our class, won the championship. Because of limitations, we were unable to hold our class picnic at White's Beach. And so we closed the year with greatexpectation for our senior year to come. Senior Year Like most senior years, ours was one full of gaiety and activity. The place which was the center of all amusement was the study hall, where all the ring- leadcrs and idealists of L. H. S. met. Because it is the largest senior homeroom, probably accounts for this fact. It was in this year that new clubs were started which will probably go down as traditional activities in L. H. S. The Senior Male Chorus, which was accomplished through the hard work of John Perkins, supplied a place for the musically inclined seniors to spend their Tuesday nights. Probably the most original group organized by the seniors was the Sunday Hikers, which were composed of both girl and boy members, who spent their sunny week-ends on the peaks of Bald Mountain. Dances this year excelled those of other years, both in number and variety. Practically every club sponsored a dance and few, if any, were unsuccessful. The two dances which profited the seniors most were the Tri-Y Fan Dance, and the Hi-Y Bubble Dance. Our athletic representation was also something to be proud of. The captains for both basketball and football were members of the senior class, Jack Fisher for basketball, and Walt Connors for football. Our senior year was not only one of activity and fun, but also one of scholar- ship and leadership. We placed twenty-six members on the Society of Scholar- ship and twenty members on the National Honor Society. For a class which went through high school during four years in which the countries of the world were at war, who could ask for a better history? O Ualediction And may the world have mercy It's sad to relate, But it's our fate, We graduate. And may the world have mercy On our souls, poor things. We're the generation That, after graduation, Will run the nation. 'Though you wouldn't know it To look us over. We've learned to spell, Some rang the bell, The others? Well- You know what we've received On our report-cards. I wish to state We appreciate And congratulate Our teachers who, after twelve Years of us, can still smile. So now We all feel That, with school at our heel, We're ready to deal With the problems of the world. Gangway! Here we come!
