Varsity squad: Affirmative Negative Ianis Pollok Ed Pino Robert Carson Ann Kontas Coach-Maurice S. Fall DEBATE SeXton's debate squad, coached by Maurice S. Fall, has Won honors and statewide recognition during this past year. The season was opened by attending an invitational practice tournament at River Rouge in which Sexton's squad won first place honors and the prize- a gavel. The significance of this tournament lies in the fact that it was the first on the road of continuous successes for the Big Red squad. Sexton defeated Eastern, Western State, Muskegon Heights, Grand Rapids Union, Grand Rapids Christian, and lackson in the preliminary series of the Michigan High School Forensic Contest early in the seasonfthe first of the group of debates for State Championship. This victory earned a Wall plaque and the right to participate in the regional eliminations at Bay City. Here again Sexton's team finished victoriously, dee feating Millington, Cass City, and Bay City. Another trophy was added to the slowly developing collection. Page Seventy-eight ROBERT CARSON RESERVE DEBATE SQUAD MAURICE FALL Quarter-finals with Kalamazoo Westerri States affirmative tearn and a semi' final debate with Royal Gales neaative squad followed soon after, with Sexton receiving unanimous decisions over their opponents in both contests. April 26 was the biq day the day of the State Championship debate. ln Rackham Buildina at Ann Arbor, Sextons negative team defeated Hudson- ville's affirmative team in the final debate of the season on the proposition of the year, Compulsory Military Training. Besides the honor of state championf ship and a huge trophy, each rnernber of the squad was awarded a aold watch. Sexton took first place in the Fiveffi Leafiue contest with fourteen victories out of a possible sixteen, losinq only to Ann Arbor. The team holds the trophy cffered to the winner of the Leaaue. Certainly not least in importance is the winning of the City Championship aqain this year from Lansing Eastern by four victories over the east side school. Altoaether debaters participated in some l25 practice debates and thirtyfsix judaed debates. Debaters distinguished themselves in other fields. Robert Carson went a lona way in the National American Legion Cratorical Contest, reachinq the national semi-finals. Merribers of the debate class entered in various field of Sprina Contest work, includina extemporane- ous spealcina, original oration, dramatic readinq, and oratorical declarnation. Several persons have spoken to the different serv- ice clubs of Lansinq. Indeed, the field of speech is wide, varied, and intcirostina. Many opportunities are offered to those who enter. He graduated from the University ot Michigan where he was an All Conference center in football and gained experience with the basketball team. His greatest thrill in ath- letics came last year as our basketball team won state champion- ship. He has had various coaching experiences at the U. ot M., Eastern, and lonia. Since coming to Central and Sexton his football, basket- ball and baseball teams have engaged in 142 games. They have won 116, lost 40, and tied 4. This gives them a remarkable 74.414 average. C. l2 Sexton U Ann Arbor l9 Sexton 7 Eastern 6 Sexton 34 Saginaw Arthur Hill 20 FOOTBALL The l945 Big Red football squad was rated as a poor successor to the i944 version. In fact, in the pre-season bull sessions, the experts gave them few chances of pulling out of the 5-A league cellar. However, the squad that could boast few lettermen proved it had what it takes to play championship football. The candidates for the team reported for practice on September first and were soon hard at work getting in shape for the first game. Day after day they practiced their hearts out under the hot sun until they could hardly walk to the locker room. However, it paid off as a perfectly conditioned team wal- loped Grand Rapids Central 45-O, and Saginaw 20-O. After two heart-breaking defeats at the hands of Flint Central C12-Ul and Ann Arbor C19-Ol they defeated many of the state's top ranking teams. Probably the greatest thrill of the season came when Capt. Bobby Neller threw two passes to Bruce Miller and Bob Grant, respectively, for the touch- down and extra-point that won the Eastern game. It would be imposible to pick any individual stars from so well balanced a team. The line deserves a great deal of the credit for opening the way for the smooth running backfield. Morale was high throughout the season. ln- deed, the l945 Big Reds were a team of which we will always be proud. Page One Hundred Six , , , ,...,,,, , ..,, .W . ,F ..f 'l ? They opened the season with a victory over a strong Midland team, which was followed by successive victories over the Alumni, Port Huron, laclcson, and Holland. During a mid-season slump, they lost, besides four games, three of their most dependable performers in the persons of Bob Pointer, Bruce Miller, and loe Caruso. On the evening of February 15, loyal Sextonites turned out to see a reorganf ized Big Bed team run rough shod over Midland 44-23. The new lineup in- cluded a pair of Sophomore guards, Don Little and Levane Goldner, with Bobby Dilday playing in the forward slot. This team proceeded to roll up an impressive string of nine victories over many of the state's top ranking These included three games that won the state regional championship teams. and a fourth victory in the state quarter finals. They lost to Saginaw Arthur Hill in the semi-final only after a hard determined fight. Bob Grant, the veteran center, was honored by being selected for the first all-state team. His record scoring of 201 points beat Bob Swanson's string record of last year. Other high scorers were Bob Dilday with 177 points, Crego 73, Levane Goldner 70, and Don Little with 51 points. They opened the season with a smashing victory over Lansing Technical High School. St. Mary's, however, was a jinx for the Chiefs who were twice defeated by them. The only other blemish on their record was a 2-to-l defeat at the hands of Ann Arbor, after Ray Alberts and Bud Mills, two key players, had gone into the service. Three hard-earned victories over Battle Creek, Iackson, and Eastern brought our team a co-championship of the 5-A league. Players who performed brilliantly throughout the season were: Stan Goldner, Bobby Dilday, and Eugene Cornelius. After graduating from Western Michigan he came directly to the Lansing School System where he has coached cross country and track. SWIMMING For the first time in four years Sexton had a swimming team. The squad was hampered by the lack of a home pool and experience. They competed with many of the state's top tank teams who repeatedly defeated them by top heavy scores. As they won no victories, the season seems 1ike a compiete failure. however, this is far from the truth as each swimmer has gained a good deal of satisfaction and development from the competition, and as Coach Howard says, A beginning has been made and that is always the hardest. We are sure that in time the team will develop to the championship caliber for which Sexton is noted. Some cf the best performers were Howard Brake, Skeeter Wickham, Zip Spencer, and Capt. Barry Breakey. TRACK The track team opened its season with a good showing against East Lansing, as they defeated the Trojans 58-45. The following week the Chiefs were nosed out by Eastern and jackson in a triangular meet. After this they were weakened by the loss of several key men due to ineligibility and injuries, and were therefore outclassed in the rest of their meets. Bob Grant turned in many outstanding performances in the shotput and Claude Puffer improved throughout the season in the high jump and broad jump. Bill Olsen held down the pole vault beautifully, and Max Eggleston, a sophomore, gave previews of greater performances to come. Zip Spencer, a senior, turned in many fine performances in the mile, while Charles Rahl did well in the sprints, and Captain Paul Gikas was outstanding in the distance runs. Prior to her college days she lived in Holland, Michigan, and attended school there. Growing up close to a lake provided the background for varied sports and gave her the oppor' tunity to develop a skill and a liking for athletics which gave her the incentive to make this work her career. This early training has proven to be a great asset to her. We are glad to welcome Mrs. Pennell, a new faculty member in the girl gym department, who joined us in September l945. Before coming to Lansing she was a resident of Butte, Montana. Mrs. Fennell attended Columbia Univer- sity in New York, preceding her seven years' teaching experience at Michigan State College. We would like to thank you, Miss Loyer and Mrs. Fennell, for your splendid sportsmanship and constant interest in our welfare. Through your generous aid and patient kindness you have helped us achieve the aim of the gym class, to develop co-ordination, poise, body strength, co-operation, leadership, responsibility, and an interest in recreation. Above are two photos taken during a gym class showing calisthentics and dancing. Each day five minutes of every class hour is spent doing exercises and formation marching to keep in condition. Dancing is taught one hour a week to develop gracefulness and rhythmic timing. Page One Hundred Twentyefour 6 I' , 9 ZZ' 2 - - Al 5 , X 51 G.A.A.
