Underneath this bewilderment is our conviction that the principles of Americanism, if applied to life, will help solve the problems. We, the graduating classes of Central l-ligh, hereby dedicate this, our Oracle, to those principles of Americanism, and ourselves to their application. MARY NYGARD. FOREWORD ...Students of Lansing Central, this i940 Oracle is now yours--yours to study and re-study as a memento of your high school career-yours to preserve forever in cherished possession. This edition of the Oracle is different from all previous editions, lt embraces no departmental faculty section-faculty members are grouped and pictured, accord- ing to extra-curricular interests. Since the usual distinction between Organizations and Activities is generally rather vague, this Oracle classifies ALL extra-curricular activities according to their respective purposes, the resulting seven divisions constituting the Extra-curricular section of this book. It is sincerely believed that the unique Senior Album page layouts are not too complicated to be easily decoded, Page Four THE ORACLE Published Each Year Since i892 49th Edition EDITORIAL AND BUSINESS STAFF I940 Editor-in-Chief: Stan Parisian Class ot January 194i Assistant Editor-in-Chief: Betty Rapp Class of June I940 Art Editors: Geraldine Sadler Class of June i940 Carson Symmonds Class of January l94l Typisti Elaine Sheltraw Class of June l9LlO Camera Editor: Arthur Mauk Class of June I940 Associate Editors: Class ot June i940 Edward Humenny Bruce Latter Mary Nygard Class of January I9fll James Burton Philip Burton Harold Sessions Bob Burke Business Manager: Morse Bettison Class ot June I940 Assistant Business Manager: Elaine Hayes Class ol January l94l Advertising Manager: Ernest Melkvik Class ot June I940 Assistant Advertising Manager Anna Wright Class ot June l9-40 Bookkeeper: Romaine Grohman Class ot June I940 Advertising Solicitors: Shirley Federman Class ot June I940 Alexander Stavros Class of January l94l Apprentice' Betty Jane Miller Class of June l94l EX-OFFICIO Robert Hammond President Class of June i940 l-larold Sessions Bob Burke Presidents Class at January l94l Page Five Page Six Page Seven J. D. McCaskey-Curator of Equipment MR. GREGORY ROBINSON The master mind behind Lansing Central's extensive athletic program and the one largely responsible for the continued success and smooth functioning of its athletic machine is that freckled, reddish haired, smiling gentleman whom you perhaps saw hurrying along the ancient halls of Central the other day. lvlr. Robinson, known as Robby to his many, many friends in Central, has this year been chosen the president of the 5-A League, a well deserved honor. His uncanny business sense and administration abilities have brought Central rough profitable years. Checking and care of approximately SiO i worth of athletic equipment, tickets, publicity, schedules, eligibi ' y, and finance of the athletic program are some of his many duties. We should all be exceed- ingly grateful and appreciative of the houyof his time which he spends making Lansing Central one of the mot powerful class A high schools in Michigan. 5 , Page One Hundred Two N , MR. JOHN MIDDLESWORTH Due to a general breakdown in health, Mr. John Middles- worth, Central's sterling mentor of football, basketball, and baseball, has been missing from his usual haunts in the gym. l-lis guidance and supervision have been missed greatly during this past year. Although his position as football coach was very capably filled by Deane Burnham during the highly suc- cessful football season of l939, and his basketball and baseball teams were coached by Mr. Wattrick in a very com- mendable manner, nevertheless we all feel that a main block in the foundation of the school's extra-curricular activities is missing. With a profound respect and admiration for Mr. Middlesworth's abilities as a handler of boys and success as a coach we are all waiting and hoping that our head coach and friend, having fully regained his health, may once again be seen next fall in the gym and halls of dear old Central and on the athletic fields guiding our teams to victory after victory as of old. AN APPRECIATION OF OUR COACH All ofthe members of this year's football team will tell the entire world that there is, on our coaching staff, a man who has won the admiration and the appreciation not only of ourselves, but also of other coaches and players. l-lis knowledge of the fundamentals of football and his sincere appreciation and understanding of us boys have won for him the respect of the team and l am sure that we all have enjoyed playing under his capable instruction. Of course, l speak of none other than that well-liked, jovial person, Coach Dean Burnham. As everyone knows by now, Mr. Burnham stepped into a difficult situation upon the leave of absence of Coach Middlesworth, but he came through with flying colors and produced a state cham- pionship team. On behalf of the team and the school we salute you, Coach Burnham. -l-lugh Davis Hoyford Page One Hundred Three CHEER LEADERS Shaffer, Baryames, Kirby, Bordeaux Pearce 522' 6, fa wg... X5 bei? Each season provides its varied enter- tainments enlisting brains and brown. In the fall, social dancing after school offers cultivation of personality as well as the increasing of one's dancing skill. The ever popular badminton invites one to fly around with the birds. A fast badminton tournament provides plenty of noon thrills, with the mixed doubles teams competing. When the warm weather rolls around and Spring Fever attacks us all, the girls eagerly begin practice for the tennis tournament. lt always has more exciting moments than we anticipate. News! An official Red Cross Life-Saving Class is now in full swing, This splendid training is excellent for the girls and may some day prove invaluable in an emergency. Endlessly, these activities roll on. Plunge periods after school! Ping-pong thrills! For class activities, soft ball and mass soccer in the fall are exhilerating. The class dancing lessons are enjoyed by the girls. Basketball champions are increasingly prevalent among the girls, they are becoming expert at volley ball, and you ought to see them swing that bat! And for those girls who prove themselves square and responsible, who are faithful, good mixers, and all 'round sports, the Girls' l-lonor Point System gives enviable rewards.
