MATHEMATICS Taylor, Benson, Bell, Miller, Burnham. CONCERNING MATHEMATICS With the possible exception of English, mathematics is probably the most necessary and useful subject in our curriculum. It is also one of the most polygonical. We find it, in one form or another, almost every- where. The physicist must constantly use mathe- matics in his work. In fact, physics may be considered either as science or mathematics for college entrance. The language depart- ment linds itself con- nected with this sub- ject. A great many mathematical terms come directly from the Latin. Architecture is something else em- ploying this subject extensively. We find it used from the an- cient Greek temples to our own modern sky- scrapers. The engineer de- pends upon math almost entirely. All of our bridges, high- ways, and machines are constructed with its help. Meter in poetry is another form of mathe- matics. Thus we find it in the field of literature. Those in the business world must know something about arithmetic in order to keep their books and, in general, to carry on business. We employ this many-sided subject even in our recreation. All our gridirons and tennis courts are built to certain measurements. It seems, then, that mathematics can be concrete as well as theoretical, and that it may prove useful to know why x-l-y:z, and a-b:c. Catherine Farr. Page Twelve
