Therefore, because character educa- tion is the latest addition to the subjects taught in Lansing Central High School, we feel that in selecting it for the theme of the 1934 Oracle We represent a full year of successful teaching and the promise of more successful years in the future. We take pride in the fact that our progressive Lansing school system is one of the first to establish formal character education in its schools. FRIENDSHIP A friendship like a flower grows, Amidst the weeds, amidst the foes. Soon a tiny bud appears Tries to grow through smiles and tears And in this bud a heart it shows To bloom and blossom like a rose 1 Give me a friendship good and true, A friendship that no axe can hew, A friendship dear, one sublime. Friendship ne'er defaced by time. To have it freshened by the dew, l give this friendship all to you. FRANCES FREEMAN Q- FIRST SEMESTER Lynn Kestenholtz ,,,.,,,,,, James Baker.. ,,,,... During the course of the following three weeks, Central suffered defeats administered by Grand Rapids Central. Jackson, and Saginaw Eastern. Eager for a taste of victory, Central won the next two games from Ann Arbor and Saginaw Arthur Hill only to be edged out the following week by one point by Battle Creek. Central dropped the city championship to Eastern in a very hard fought game which ended 16 to 7 in favor of Eastern. Can you remember:-The tense moments in the Jackson game when Central was only a few inches from their goal line? Saginaw Eastern's Bob Kolbe? The sea of mud and rain during the Ann Arbor game? Central's receptive parade before the Saginaw Arthur Hill game? Harry Piddington's end run in the Battle Creek game or Harry Speelman's touchdown at Saginaw? Michaelis' disqualified touchdown in the Eastern game? Frank Gaines sensational tackles? Page One Hundred Two . If .I .1 f. r Top Row: Christian. liort, LeClear, Black. Remez. Davis. Coons, Barber. During the second halt' lfastern tried recklessly to score through trick pass plays. being unable to puncture the steller line of Thomas. Conarton, Truscott, Easton. Ci. Carpenter. Middlesworth goes the credit of having successfully completed another Big Red basketball season. His proteges were recognized by this season's opponents as clean players and hard fighters. Central won 8 of its l-1' scheduled games, and tied for third place in the lfive-A League with Jackson. Some of their outstanding victories were the defeats which the Big Reds administered to Pontiac.+leader in the Saginaw Valley, and their victory over Ann Arbor. ln tournament play, Central handed Grand Rapids South a defeat before losing the Regional Championship to Eastern. During the nrst semester. the individual play of Captain Cid Andros was outstanding. Harry Olin also contributed much to the success of the Hrst semester's team. ln the second semester. Captain Bill Curtis was the shining light. He was also assisted by the olfensive work of Bob Steadman and i'Bill Carpenter, and the defensive work of Ted Bryanton and Bob Morse. Four of this year's veterans will bein line for play next fall when the season opens. Central was defeated at Ann Arbor in a triangular meet with Ann Arbor and Monroe. Monroe took the meet with 36, Ann Arbor second with 37, and Central last with 47. Defeat cannot be explained because Central's men were nosed out of places only by inches. The time was 10:43. In the State Meet Central took second with 87, Kalamazoo took first with 80. The time for this race was a new state record. The boys who contributed largely to this successful season were L. Clough. B. Curtiss, R. J' Langley, H. Barnes, C. Chamberlain, and G. Balasses.
