The Red and White charges of Coach J. Chuchran got off to a flying start as they trounced McAdo0 behind an almost perfect game of football. The highlights of the game were long runs by Dan Leonard and Steve Vitek, and Bob Popik kicked all five extra points to start his string of consecutive extra points. LANSFORD I6 - FRACKVILLE 0. Once again the Panthers emerged victorious, but gone was a lot of the polish shown a few days ago as the Frack's defense confused the offensive attempts of the locals throughout most of the game. LANSFORD I4 - SUMM!T HILL 7. The Panthers downed a rough and scrappy Summit Hill outfit before a large throng to extend their winning streak to three straight for the season. lt was the first time the Red and White managed to overcome the Hillers in a few years. Bob Popik kicked his 9th consecutive extra point for the season. LANSFORD 20 -SHENANDOAH O. The powerful Panthers extended their streak to four in a row as they thumped a strong outfit by a 20-O count. Dan Leonard, Eddie Chuckran, and Franny Radocha con- tributed the Panther touchdowns. LANSFORD 20 - WEST HAZLETON 6. The Red and White charges uped their string to five wins in a row by defeating a highly favored team by 20-6. Terrific tackling and blocking sparked the Panther attack as they refused to be stopped. One of the highlights of the game was a 9I yard kick by Steve Vitek. TAMAQUA I8-LANSFORD 7. The Panthers were finally derailed by a determined Raider outfit, by an I8-7 score. CASS TOWNSHIP I4 - LANSFORD 7. The local boys were stunned again as a light, scrappy Shipper outfit put the blocks to them by I4-7. LANSFORD 26-HAZLE TOWNSHIP O. The Panthers finally recovered and trounced Hazle Township by a score of 26-0. Fred Tiley, Dan Leonard, and Steve Vitek made the scores with Bob Popik adding twc extra points. NESQUEHONING I4 - LANSFORD 0. Nesquehoning won as the Panthers went down fighting to over- come a I4 point deficit. It was their third defeat and the only shutout of the season. LANSFORD 27 - COALDALE 6. Our boys made it twc in a row over the Tigers, and gained possession of the coveted trophy for another year. Scoring twenty points in the opening stanza and seven in the second, the Panthers swept their opponents off their feet. Highlighting the game was a 70 yard punt return by Steve Vitek. Bob Popik added three extra points by means of his educated toe to tie a school record for conversions in one season with I8 extra points. ALL STAR GAME -After six inches of snow was plowed from the field, the Carbon All Stars, coached by Lansford's Johnny Chuckran, proceeded to plow the Schuylkill All Stars under a 33'6 score. Lansford's Steve Vitek and Dan Leonard scored a touchdown apiece and Bob Popik added the three extra points. Seven of our boys took part in the contest. INDIVIDUAL SCORING TD's PAT SAF. Circus Time: i963 A huge crowd is thronging to famed Madison Square Garden tonight to witness the initial performance of a brand new circus troupe. The entire troupe is composed of former students of Lansford High School, and the show looks very promising. Let's hurry in with the crowd and buy our tickets at one of the numerous box offices where, much to our surprise, we find Dolores Swider, Helen Yevchak, Jeanne Sova, and Gen. Mikoliiczyk, assisting with the sale of tickets. As we enter the vast arena, the strains of a lively march reach our ears, and we see a smartly uniformed band performing under the baton of Professor Michael Lopata. We recognize some of the muscians as Bart Ogozalek, Ed Bydlon, and Joe Ogozalek. An usher, also a graduate of Lansford High-Beverly Thomas-leads us to our seats and we notice that her assistants are Eleanore Dedinsky, Dorothy LeRoy, Joyce Williams, and Maryann Swider, all members of a professional Usher's Club owned and operated by George Pavlik. As we get settled in our ringside seats, we see that renowned commentator Wendell Martinkovic, making his way through the seated spectators in search of celebrities. He stops to speak with someone in the front row, it looks like the Met opera star Sylvia Vavro, with her personal traveling companion Inez Totani. Their escorts are John Sparks, con- ductor of the Metropolitan Symphonic Orchestra, and Ward Olson, one of his musicians. Sitting directly in back of them are Joe Stack and Bernard Markey, members of Mayor Bob Frendak's council in White Bear. They are chatting with author Jane Stewart, and the famous Broadway actress, Marney Navatny. Ascending the steps to our left, is that world famous concert pianist, Agnes Botek, accompanied by her friend Fran Brinkos who is a model employed by the country's largest modeling agency owned by Frank Bohenick and Joe Demyan. Charles Galgoci, employed in Hollywood as an understudy for Greg Peck, and that brilliant young Wall Street lawyer, Tom McCall, are their companions. They stop to chat with some of their former classmates, Jacque Breslin, wealthy co-owner of a contracting firm, hair stylist Frances Culley, Pat McLaughlin, society leader in Summit Hill, and Rene Breslin, a chemist for the Hager Research Laboratories. Making their way through the crowd, we recognize a few notables in the field of medical science-Chief Nurse at Jefferson, Dorothy Puskar, Dr. Steve Romanek, Anne Skrabak, R.N. and John Pollack, male nurse. To our right we see Wendy talking to Bob Popik and Steve Vitek both professional football stars, Frank Zlock and Dan Leonard, Olympic stars in track, and John Zuzu and Lou Sfarra, two other well-known personalities in the sports world. Accompanying them are several well-known figures in the medical world: Ann Figura and Betty Jane Ardas, World Health Service nurses who have iust returned from abroad, Marie Hosak, Children's Specialist, and Bernice Gamble and Betsy Fessler, supervisors at the T. and Z. Foundation in New York City. lfonlinued on Page 7U 69 f COA'GRA7'Ul,ATl0A'S GR14DUfI7'ES . . As we scan through our program, our eye is attracted by the art work which was done by that famous artist, Jack Demcak. There's the opening whistle, and our attention focuses cn the main ring. Ringmaster Jchn Hlubik announces the first act-The Tumblers Two, and we thrill to the intricate routine of tumbling of Virginia McElvar, and Anne Radocho. Their stunning costumes were designed by that reputable fashion stylist, Marge Kosalko. The spotlight now throws its beam on a spot high above the arena where Al Kosica and Betty Rosak do a breath-taking act on the high trapeze. Directly below them in the center ring we see Francis Brunda on the high-bar and Bill D. Smith on the parallel-bar performing amazing feats of daring and skill. Their brilliant performance is followed by a dazzling baton-twirling routine by the Champ of the U. S., Dorothy Scerbacic, and a dance number by that terrific star of television, Lillian Ruzicka. The scene of activity once again shifts to the center ring as Mike Hanas makes a grand entrance with his trained elephant which carries a young girl in its trunk whom we recognize as that daring miss, Lil Kitlan. Their performance will be hard to equal. The clowns, whom we recognize even under their make-up as Don Penberth, Bill Smith, Randy Gormley, and George Major, introduce the next act with an added bit of clowning and mimicking. lntc the ring come the famous dog trainers, Liz Kadlecik and Angie Koshuto, with their great act which brings another burst of applause from the audience. Next on the program is that famous lion-tamer, Tom Brennan, and he puts his ferocious lions and tigers through a complicated series of stunts with the assistance of his partner, Jim Hill. Now the spotlight swings to the left ring, and four prancing white horses enter, led by trainer and horseman, Jack Repko. This performance is highlighted by the eye-catching bare-back riders, Dorothy Hydock and Em Kolaya. lmmediately following is a thrilling, death defying act of auto-racing by the only two women daredevil racers in the world-Nancy Lou Shappell and Marilyn Mollard. Their performance ends in a crash through a wall of fire, and the arena rings with applause and the two step out from their cars. After the applause subsides, the ringmaster once more comes into the main ring and announces the grand finale. The performers all step into the spotlight to take their final bows amidst a deafening crescendo of cheers. The big show is over! Performers and audience all take their leave, but in their hearts is the song of a iob well done. Fran and Ann D. 71 -. A group of freshman entered L.H.S. one sunny September morning, a little wary of the hustle but, nevertheless, eagerly looking forward to four exciting years of high school life. We did all the foolish things which green freshmen were expected to do. The bewildered looks on our faces as we tried to sort out the maze of rooms stamped us as new- comers. This merited the superior grins of the upper-classmen, but we stuck together, and managed to get through under the able leadership of our class-president, Francis Brunda. During the course of the year, we were able to present a class play, of which we felt very proud. September 1950 . . . We returned to school secure in the fact that we were not the least of the under-classmen. Several changes had occurred during the summer months. All of a sudden everyone became more interested in social life, iudging from the number of parties held by members of the Sophomore class. Some of the boys took their courage in hand and even learned to dance-much to the amusement of their shyer friends. Our class president, Daniel Leonard, did a splendid job of leading the class. This year our class play Don't Call Me Junior, proved to be one of our best achievements. At the clcse of the term, we bade good-bye to our classmates for the summer, and looked ahead with eagemess to our Junior Year. September 1951 . . . There was an extra bounce to our steps as we returned for our all important Junior year. We contemplated all the exciting things which would occur during the year. Under the able leadership of Thomas Hager, our class president, we buckled down to the iob of selecting class rings. On VaIentine's Day, we entertained the members of District Chorus at our Valentine Hop. The success of this dance brought to the fore a hidden talent of the class- the ability to advertise our undertakings. Our class play this year was again a great success. After hectic preparations, we presented the annual Junior Prom. Frances Brinkos, a member of cur class, had the honor of reigning as Prom Queen. This year, Senior commencement excercises brought to our minds, that our Senior year loomed not far ahead. Septmember 1952 . . . We entered L.H.S. with a superior air about us, especially when we saw a new batch of freshmen going through the same experiences we had. The biggest task ahead of us was to put out a year-book such as L.H.S. had never seen before. lA task which we completed successfullyl. We introduced a Sadie Hawkins' Day Dance at which many boys who never danced before suddenly found themselves out on the dance floor. The concession workers of the class have many a fond memory l?2l of cleaning the stadium stands after a football game, but they consoled themselves with the thought that is was all for their own benefit. Our Christmas play entitled Letty's Christmas Prodigal again proved to be another successful undertaking. All our class proiects and undertakings were guided by our capable president Tom McCall. Now came the time when everyone said they were looking forward to Graduation, but deep in our hearts, we knew we'd miss all our friends and the feeling of belonging that we had at L.H.S. Men who are heirs to wealth, and do nothing but enjoy it, may be drones on society, but the men who are accumulating wealth, are not. Such men have, or enlist, working capital Chow expre55z'z'e that term isj in their projects, and every project so conceived Qalong .round fines, of cour.ve,j give men jobs, or maintain men in jobs already created. In other words, the enterpriser will venture his wealth in the interests of larger achievement. In earlier days the leaders pushed railroads West, and ever west, while thousands of other enterprisers followed in their train. In those days of enterprise the only drones in the business hive were those who didnlt want work. Those days can come again. They will return when it becomes no longer popular to abuse, harass and handicap the men who are willing to risk their working capital in exchange for a reasonable profit in the event of success. There are thousands ofthat kind of men in America today, and they can, under fair conditions, make jobs for hundreds ofjthousands. Taxing methods that penalize enterprise work harm to the whole community. Encourage the entrepreneur spirit.
