MICHAEL ORIEL Assistant Coach THE PANTHERS ON THE GRIDIRON McADOO 7 - LANSFORD 6 - Johnny Chuckran, entering his first season as coach of the Panthers, dropped a heartbreaker to the Maroons of McAdoo on a muddy gridiron. It was a hard-fought game. with Lansford in command till the final minutes of play when the Maroons scored and made the all important extra point. LANSFORD 6 f FRACKVILLE 6 f lt looked as though the Red and White had their first win of the season, but the Fracks came through with a touchdown at the close of the last period and deadlocked the contest. SUMMIT HILL 25 f LANSFORD 6 - The HiIIer's passing circus and running attack stymied the Panthers and resulted in our team's being on the short end of the final score. LANSFORD I4 f SHENANDOAH 6 f The charges of coach Chuckran crashed into the win column for the first time by playing an impressive game against the Shenandoah Blue Devils. Trailing at half- time, the L. H. S. gridders came back for the second half and opened up the defense, thus gaining a well-earned victory. LANSFORD 20 - WEST HAZLETON O -- Playing host to a powerful and favored Wildcat eleven, our boys displayed true fighting spirit and soundly trounced the visiting aggregation. TAMAQUA 46 f LANSFORD O - The Red and White winning streak was temporarily stalled by a then unbeaten, Blue Raiders grid machine which went on to take the Panther Valley championship. LANSFORD I3-CASS TOWNSHIP I3 - After being outscored and outplayed in the first two quarters, the Panthers returned to tie a very fast Cass team. LANSFORD 26 - HAZLE TOWNSHIP O-Lansford chalked up their third victory of the season by beat- ing Hazle Township In the L. H. S. field. NESQUEHONING I9 f LANSFORD 6 - Our squad travelled to Nesquehoning with high hopes of conquering its Valley rival, but was checkmated by a determined host team. LANSFORD 2 - COALDALE O - This was the biggest victory for the Panthers and the first time we had beaten a Coaldale eleven in a few years. Fourteen boys donned Red and White pads and helmets for the last time. They included: Evans, Dignazio, Kosica, Gallagher, Kosciolek, Vitek, Bokrosh, Skryzpiec, Filloy, Besbris, Buchala, Markovich, Grezik, and Krainak. The Tigers were held without a single first down, Bob Popik, a Lansford tackle, scored the winning safety on a blocked kick in the fourth quarter. ALL STAR GAME - On the cold and blustery 28th of November, the second annual All Star Game, sponsored by the Coaldale and Lansford Lions Clubs, was played in the L. H. S. Stadium. Rebounding from last year, the Schuylkill County Seniors drew a I5fO verdict over the Carbon County Seniors. Seven Lansford boys took part in the contest. INDIVIDUAL SCORING TD PAT SAF. PTS. PRGPHECY Scene: Lansford Anthracite Bowl Event: Annual Turkey Day Classic between Lansford Panthers and Coaldale Tigers Time: Thanksgiving Day l96l Despite the freezing weather, this gala occasion has brought everyone from far and near to witness this annual thriller. Today is also the grand opening of the newly built stadium, designed by William Tarlton. Construction efforts were speeded up recently to meet the deadline by John Savitsky, John Kovacik and Howard Heffelfinger, Civil Engineers. At this moment, the flashy red and white clad L.H.S. band is making its entrance through the south gate with director, Professor James Lorah, in charge, pre- ceded by Anna Haicak's high stepping twirlers. Arriving in a highly polished limousine, chauffeured by Michael Polakovic, are Betty Cunning and Frances Zarsky, famous beauticians, with their assistants Shirley Heffelfinger, Flossie Basiago and Peggy Clark. Coming in the main gate, we see many of the Class of i952 Alumni serving their country. Barbara Tarry, a lieutenant in the Waves, Admirals George Krainak, George Hydock and Joe Pavlik all in blue, Chief of Staff, Edward Drozd and General Frank Petko of the Army, and Edward Harvan, the Marine hero. George Bokrosh, loaned by CBS for the occasion, is announcing the arrival of the officals for the game. The umpire, we note, is the renowned Richard Vitek. Headlines man, Steve Grezik, and referee, Albert Skrzypiec, have volunteered their service for the day. The fans are cheering the home team as they rush on the field, with Tommy Gall- agher and Siegfried Kosciolek, Co-Coaches, confident of winning their last game of the season. The cheerleaders, coached by Anna Zona, are rendering a rousing 2-4-6-8 for the team. We see nine women in white prepared to take things in hand, should this battle prove to be bloody. They are Nancy Brimmer, Stella Gorka, Joan Henninger, Shirley Marshall, Annette Matta, Ann Shober, Edwina Stickler, Joan Surotchak and Eleanor Yesenko. Everyone's attention is focused on the helicopter which is landing on the green of the field as Louis Dignazio, the president of the United States, arrives with his cabinet members. They include Jay Cook and Michael Sniscak, former Lansfordians. The chief executive also brought his personal secretaries Mary Kralicek, Marie Becker and Pauline Repinec along on this annual excursion of his. Everyone is settled and the game has started. Lansford won the toss and elected to receive. With our microscopic eye glasses which, by the way, were invented by John Krizan, the noted scientist and inventor, we see many notables of national repute, huddled in the bleachers. There is Mary Louise Stickler, off duty from the set of Gone With the Breeze which is being produced by Kuchta, Matta and Markovich lnc., MGM's recent successor. We got the extra point and the score is now Lansford 7, Coaldale Ol Charles Stewart, the town's leading mortician, is hovering near the Coaldale lads, presumably expecting a few new prospects. It has iust been announced that Doctor Marvin Evans, Jr., is wanted at the main gate, immediately. Louise Jones, Theresa Gallagher, and Geraldine Gallanda, the popular dance trio, iust arrived and are talking business with Louis Ferretti, proprietor of the Flamingo Club of New York. Jo-Ann Vitek, the Doris Day of today, spotted the group and is descending the steps to meet her former classmates. lt's half-time and the crowd is rushing to the refreshment stand for Elda Mae Morgan's famous hot toddy. There is another announcement, if the holder of ticket number 1952 will come to the press box, he will be the recipient of a set of chains, donated by Drozd, Fittos and Wargo, Inc. the owners of garages across the nation. As an added feature between the halves, the announcer is going to pass through the crowd, with a roving microphone making spot interviews. He has approached a young lady who is a leading figure with the United States Atomic Commission and we find, to our surprise, that it is none other than Miss Peggy Davis. He is now interviewing Miss Doris Spence, the local Physical Education instructor, who is giving her views on the game. The microphone has spotted Harry Vadyak and John Yalch, trumpeteers for Tommy Dorsey who have offered to render a duet. The last person to be interviewed is Mary Matta, the chairlady of the Turnpike Commission. The Lansford boys started the second half with renewed vigor. ln contrast to the cold weather, on our right is a billboard displaying the latest fashions for beach apparel, modeled by Georgine Ambrose, Josie Mihalovic and Mary Pasho, Conover models. Ellen Kulha, Janice Yuskanish and Margie Hruska, Managers of 5 8. 10 cent stores throughout Pennsylvania are here to witness the game. Helen Pisko and Rose Vavra, owners of a travel agency are also on hand today. It seems the score will end with Lansford ahead 7-O. But wait! Lansford caught a fumble and the star halfback is on his way for a touchdown. Yes, that was a 52 yard dash to make the score 13-0. And the game ends, with Lansford winning their 11th straight Turkey Clash since 1951. LOG 0F THE CLASS OF 1952 FIRST ENTRY . . . September 1948 thru September 1949 . . . The Freshman Class left port one bright September morn and started on its voyage through four years of High School. We were all very excited and even a little scared of what the future had in store for us,butthat wasto be expected. To most of us, those first few weeks proved very exasperating. Algebra, getting lost in the halls, and the disapproving stare of upperclassmen added to our dilemma. All we lacked were the traditional Frosh beanies . Thank goodness no one suggested them! What we needed was someone to organize our confused ranks and Captain Louis Dignazio was the man for the iob. At last, we felt like human beings again. Several of our young men took part in sports and a number of our fair maidens caught the eyes of upperclassmen and found them- selves at the Junior Prom. During the year we put our heads together and came up with a topnotch Variety Show. Who could forget Klotz's Soda Fountain, which was complete with soda ierks, and the washboard orchestra. Our first year ended, we were looking forward to a vacation at Camp Greenwood and our Sophomore year. SECOND ENTRY . . . September 1949 thru June 1950 . . . Having one year of sound experiences behind us, we were prepared to face this term with a little common sense and more confidence. Louis Dignazio was chosen to command our crew again. The idea of buying class hats was born, but for some reason it never took hold. Several of our capable musicians made us feel very proud as they took part in District Chorus, Band, and Orchestra. Not many boys tried gridiron tactics, but we were well represented on the Junior cage team and the cinderpath. In February our class was called upon to present an Assembly program. We were not pred- iudiced, but we thought the play Ghost Farm was among the best produced in Lansford High School. A murder mystery was iust the thing to keep everyone glued to his seat and Ghost Farm did iust that. All too quickly the year slipped away. The thought of next year loomed big in our minds and we wondered whether we were really mature and wise enough to make the grade. Time would tell the tale. THIRD ENTRY . . . September 1950 thru June 1951 . . . After a pleasant summer we went back to school as upperlcassmen. Looking over our ranks, we noticed that the boys had added a few inches to their height, and the girls had become quite clothes conscious. By popular vote, Bernard Wargo was elected to the post of President. Although our class rings didn't arrive until Christmas, we considered them well-worth waiting for. Athletics seemed to be the keyword of the male portion. Evans, Dignazio, and Kosciolek played first-string, varsity football and Evans and Eddie Drozd, varsity basketball. Others were available for action when needed. John Krizan brought honor to our school and class by being selected for State Band. Our annual program was given prior to the Thanksgiving Vacation. The Ghost of William Shakespear, played by William Tarlton, appeared to save Romeo and Juliet from ruin in the hands of some high school students. A girls' trio and a boys' sextet were formed and became recognized vocalists. Finally, in May, came the event all Juniors had been anxiously waiting for, the Junior Prom. We felt that the decorations created by out artists made our Prom one of the most beautiful held in a long time. A senior, Kathryn Phillipovich, was chosen to reign as Queen. lt seemed hardly possible, but our last and most important year was iust around the corner. Imagine! To return in the fall as Mighty Seniors! FOURTH ENTRY . . . September 1951 thru June 1952 . . . Our goal was finally reached as we entered the last log of our iourney. At first, it was hard to become adiusted to all the pri- vileges and responsibilities of a senior, but we soon took them in our stride. Realizing the need for an able leader, we wisely picked Louis Dignazio, for President. ln order to carry on our various activities, especially the yearbook, our finances had to be increased. The football concession stand, dances, the sale of magazine subscriptions, yearbook ads, and fruitcakes, proved to be our biggest money-makers. All the sports were dominatedby- the senior players, which was natural. One of the outstanding football achievements was the Thanksgiving Day victory over Coaldale. For the first time, the Senior Band members were presented with sweaters. As the production of the Christmas program belonged to the senior class, we called upon our best actors to make it a success. The main feature was a one-act play, Christmas on Erie Street. ln addition, several specialties, included the appearance of Santa Claus, added to the spirit of the show. Before we had time to think, the trip was almost over, and we were busy getting ready for Class Night, and Graduation Day. The Big Day arrived, and we pulled into port, our voyage ended. .
