True, it is not quite so elaborate as may be desired. Our space is limited, as we are at warp and conservation is necessary. This year's edition, of the Panther is however, a record of the activities and achievements of the members of the senior class only, for the enjoyment of those members, their families, and their friends. If in the years to come, this book brings back memories, fond or otherwise, to some successful doctor, nurse, engineer, or laborer of our class roster, we shall have been successful in our endeavor. Friend after friend departsp Who hath not lost a friend? There is no union here of hearts That finds not here an end. Wernert Year after year the advisers of The Panther together with The Panther Staff have endeavored to produce a volume, representative of the student body as a whole. This year, however, because of a desire to conserve patriotically, the I943 issue of The Panther is a record of the senior class only. ln tact, at first it seemed impossible to have even this abreviated edition. lt is through no fault of the advisers nor of the staff that the undergraduate activities are excluded. May laughter days in the future make possible the maintaining of previous standards in the compiling and assembling of undergraduate records. As an expression of appreciation for their co-operation in making possible the pub- lication of this volume, The Panther Staff wishes to thank the staff advisers. 'ar -1, REVEILLE TO TAPS C-00 On September 2, l942, the Lunsford High School drafted one hundred thirty-six boys and girls into the senior class. Because of the present world conflict these students endeavored to adiust themselves to the changes it had wrought. Many became air-raid wardens, messengers, and ration volunteers. Chewing gum, candy, and such luxuries were abandoned in favor of weekly purchases of war stamps and bonds. Football, however, became a definite part of the senior schedule. The loyal fans, who flocked to the stadium, rose to their feet, cheering wildly at the outstanding perform- ances of Captain Alex Ferretti, Joseph Petko, Edward Klementovic, and George Boyle who again and again carried the pigskin over the line! The season was climaxed at Coal- dale where the team soundly thrashed the Orange and Black opponents to the tune of l9f0! Not to be outdone by these superb athletes, the dramatically inclined seniors pre- sented as their annual class program a play entitled She Was Only A Farmer's Daughter. This old-fashioned melodrama revived the Gay Ninety Era and kept the audience roaring. The heroine, Millie lAlma Vanal was rescued from the clutches of a dastardly villain, Mulberry Foxhall lSidney Cohenl by dashing, daring, young Osgood Smithers lWilliam Whildinl. Sidney Cohen almost stopped the show with his hissing speech, characteristic of all old-time villains. The enthusiastic audience applauded spontaneously, at the close of the performance the members of the entire cast took their well-deserved bows. The seniors next invaded the field of forensics. ln oratory Alma Vana and Arthur Altschuler by their eloquent and well-delivered speeches captured first place in the girls' and boys' contests. The debate team, however, was severely handicapped by the gasoline shortage which prevented its competing with distant high schools as it had done in previous years. In the way of social activities the seniors held three very successful dances. One at the beginning of the termfa sort of Welcome Back Hop, the second, a gay Holiday Jive, while the third was the annual Easter Ball. Meanwhile the war began to creep closer to home, soon some senior boys, restless and raring to get into the fight, ioined Uncle Sam's forces. ln a short while these lads bade their Alma Mater farewell, promising to visit her on every furlough. At school a Victory Corps was organized, and on bright, sunny days the military-minded boys and girls, marched in their respective squads. ''Left-right-left-right-forward-march! Many of the senior boys and girls, who possessed a powerful larynx and the vital quality of leadership, were appointed corporals of various groups. The Army and Navy test books had a place in the seniors' schedule, preparing them for eventual induction into the WAACS, the WAVES, the air, sea, or land forces. Each bewitching feminine or superb laheml masculine specimen awaited eagerly the call to arms. The days sped by. March, April, May-and then came the long-awaited month of June. First, the solemn Baccalaureate exercises, next the comedy and sadness of Class Night, and finally the poignant and heart-warming hours of Commencement. Memories never to be forgotten! Out of our memory. We hope to make the future brighter dear 43. School days are over, we'lI be on our way. Out through life's portals, trying to be gay. lt won't be easyg It won't be all play But we'Il pledge our best each day. So now dear friends good-bye These twelve years sure did fly But they shall never die Instead our memories live with me eternally. FORWARD MARCH! As Freshmen we were green as grass ln dear old Lansford High. We stood and watched the classes pass, And then we wondered why. As Sophomores we were very wise, There's naught we did not know. We'd always register surprise lf someone doubted so. As Juniors we all realized That we were growing old, We really worked and highly prized Our class rings made of gold. As Seniors we are rather blue That school days here are o'er, A world of chaos bids us too To ioin Life's Victory Corps. Dear L. H. '4 FIFTY-SIXTH COMMENCEMENT PROGRAM THURSDAY, JUNE 10,1943 cLAss or 1943 C09 Because of the scarcity of materials together with the lack of manpower in our printing industry, The Panther has to go to press earlier this year than formerly. At this time only the probable program of commencement activities is avilable. The averages of the seniors are as yet not computed, therefore the high school authorities have not designated the oration awards. The program printed at the time of commencement will make up for this loss. The class is fortunate, however, in knowing that its commencement orator will be Dr. Don Bate. He is an outstanding author, traveler, commentator, and newswriter. With his background of travel in practically every country of Europe and Asia he is well equipped to speak of a World Ablaze. His understanding of youth and its problems makes it possible for him to place youth in this World Ablaze. Commencement exercises prom- ise to be indeed an event long to be remembered by the Lunsford Community as well as by the class of 1943. C00 AMERICA . . . . . Audience INVOCATION ..... . The Rev. FOOTBALL --- 1942 000 The Lansford High School football season of 1942 went down into the history of sports as immortal. The invincible Panthers brought fame as well as success to add to the pride of their Alma Mater. They won nine out of ten games, finishing second in the Eastern Pennsylvania Football Conference. Furthermore, the Panthers struck incessant blows on Thanksgiving Day against the Coaldale Tigers, their top rival, until finally Coaldale accept- ed deafet to the tune of a 19-O score. This marked the first Panther victory over the Tigers on the Coaldale field. Hail to a Never-say-die Lansford team! Morever, the great honors received by outstanding gridders of the Panthers' squad set a record for all time. Alex Ferretti was selected Pennsylvania All-State Fullback. Eddie Klementovic, All-State Guard, with Joe Petko and Paul Kucan given honorable mention on the All-State team at Half-Back and End respectively. Climaxing the Panthers' glorious season was the unanimous selection of Lansford's Mike Holovak, a senior at Boston College, as All-American Fullback, while Joe Repko received honorable mention on the All-American team. In the next eight games it lost only one contest. Highlights of the season were victories over Nesquehoning and Summit Hill iust when each of them was leading the Black Diamond League.
