June 21, 1948 Editor Lans-Hi-Lites Lansford, Pennsylvania Dear Editor: Here we are, two members of the class of l958--still traveling, still single, still happy. For the past five years we've been seeing America first, and were particularly surprised to find so many of our classmates in this section of the country. During our stay here, we've seen more old pals and have had a better get-together than we've had since our class outing. CYou probably heard about that.J At any rate, our main purpose in writing is to give you some idea of the tre- mendous success of the alumni of 1958. Of course, as you know, Hollywood is still the glamour center of all America. Our first night out was spent Ndoing the town.n One of the liveliest spots here and around is Joe Repko's Hawaiian Paradise. Joe has commercialized his talents as a'E5st, which were evinced so many times during school days at his hulubki suppers. It seems to be quite popular, and we readily understood that, when the lights dimmed and Jean Hand entered to the rhythm of strumming guitars. Her famed routine was created by Cyril Novak, who swings his baton and his or- chestra nightly at the Paradise. The muted trumpets of Frank Andrews, Paul Imrisek, and Tommy Rockefeller, combined with the suttle stringed instruments of the ormer Uzark Hill-Billies, Edward Krutsick, Joe Gorka, and Luke Scrbacic, do keep the swing addicts stomping out the Congo Clog. After the entertainment, Martha Do era served to us a delicious dinner. We chatted with her for a while and learned that Jake Sn der and King Hlubik were the chief chefs of the establishment, with Jackie Harahnc as head waiter. Try to imagine Jake and King elbow-deep in dough. COf course, we mean the flour and liquid mixture.P Can't you visualize Jackie acting as suave as they come? Strange as it may seem to you, this is what we actually saw. Serving other tables we soon discerned Toni Cattivera, Mary Kocon, Sophie Kosciolek, and Sara Ogozalek. Just before we left, we met a group of late-comers, including Martha Vavra, MarghVeron, Betty Major, and Helen Miklosovic. They wete escorted by g omas Aiken, Joe Bo le, Gennero DeMicEele, and Joe Derkac, who are under contract to KEIqy and Kelly, Incorporated. - IGeorge and Robertl. These up-and-coming members of the film colony were loaded down with everything from soup to nuts. That old-fashioned scavanger hunt is still okay with these Californians when it comes to doing something different. Martha was dragging a chimpanzee on a chain, while Mary helped Joe balance himself on a velocipede of Ye Olde Gay Nineties. You should have seen Betty parading in with a abr asi ve-e 5 4. 4m4. 4.aa A ----N 1- -' .4..L....... . . ... .iL....,,,,,, A HL., aebaa bwr he ir 8 ,egg 4,54 SENQOR CLASS PROPHECY KGontinuedJ small evergreen tree covered with Christmas balls and tinsel. All this ridiculous horse-play brought a howl from the crowd, but the rules of the game are the sillier, the better. Bringing up the rear were HDerkien and nGigiW. Here comes the laugh of laughs--just picture them--two very dignified young men all rigged out in a Hsoup and fishu, trying their very best to coax a three-legged pig into making his grand entrance. Aiken was doing his utmost to help the pig along, but he was more than handicapped. A large peacock feather was sticking out of his Htopperu, he held a geranium plant in one hand and a lighted candle fburning at both ends! in the other, white mice were climbing out of his topcoat, and his flee circus had gotten loose in his hip pocket. They all seemed to be taking a holiday on poor, suffering Tom. You can beiieve us when we say, ' . The place was like a mad house. With a final splurge of all the energy we had left we made for the door. So to our hotel ----- . After such an exciting evening Cwe're not so young as we used to bel we looked forward to the refreshing quiet of our room. But--as we neared our destination, a commotion which sounded like a hog- calling contest nearly knocked us over. lt was Julius Pekarik staging a one-man riot with the hotel manager, John Bomba. lt seems he wanted to obtain an interview with Miss Ruth Walton, the Garbo of '48. We convinced the management that this sensational snoop-reporter was absolutely harmless. Pekarik thanked us and gave us two passes for admittance into the studios of Kell and Kelly. The next day looked inviting, so we made ready for hed and a good night's sleep, Bright and early the following morning, we started to the studios, presented our passes, and secured a guide who turned out to be Edward Brimmer, a very cynical gentleman disappointed in love. First, he took us to the set on which Lena Galuk was starring in nWatch My Dust,n by that imaginative author, William Markovich. You'll never guess who supplied the love interest--none other than Carl Nathan Zimmerman, who is the heart-throb of many a high school lassie. The actors' favorite photographers, John Pispek and William Reaman, hovered above, shooting from various angles, while that genius of electricity, Charles Olsefsky, was having trouble with some crossed ' wires, which the pet pranhster of Hollywood, Jack Gilmore, had en- tangled. Over in one corner, WChatterH Reusch, that noted columnist, was carrying on a very demonstrative conversation with sound-man, Steve Marcinko, and sound-effects-man, Michael Kalny. All these years haven't changed Michael a bit--he's still a firecracker in anybody's language. We went over to the excited trio, to find that Dann Ole , dealer in second-hand Hudson cars, had sold NChatterH a so-called nlemon.H After a while they told us that Anna Bilovsky, Irene Cupak, and Francis Krutsick were extras on the nThree Musketeersn set, so we dashed over to see them. Much to our surprise, Junior Eckroade, Michael Rusnak, and John Yatsko headed the cast of this production. While we stood around and marveled at the gigantic constructions, . director Lawrence Kimmel handed us the script of the story, and we noticed at once that Mary Dobda had written the screen version. After thj final take, the directorfs secretary, Helen Fedora, told us that sraeb asrswse 4aa4ss as aa QWrP3tPW 'A,E9it'Pg5t as4as4Qa4g4Qs a 1942758 SQNICR CLAS PROPHECY CContinued7 Jean McCole and Emil Mikola'z k were eminent creators of Hollywood's most outstanding coilfuresg ha Sara Faust and Olga Tranchek were working in the studio designing Americals smartest ensembles, and that Kathryn Heffelfinger had just sold her latest novel nHow to Win Popu- larity and Influence Men.U What surprises! Too many for us, so we decided to go intellectual and drive out to Pomona College. A After lwncheon, we rented a car from a U-Drive-It agency owned and operated by Alex Shereba and Mitchell Strepko. After a lovely ride, we arrived at the college, parked our carf-and grounds. Of all people--the first person we met was began to roam the Dean Paul Burkhart Kplus a beard and a mustachel. We were happy to hear from him that several of our old classmates were his co-instructors. There were Florence Bloom as head of the English Departmentg Veronica Skottey and Anna Vitek supervising the commercial schoolg and Harry Miller as chief of Manual Arts. The dean remarked that the campus ha recently been improved upon by two skilled landscape artists, John Zubeck and Ernest Yusko. He also informed us that Emma Baldwin, the little out-uplof our high school days, was doing big things in the field of dramatics. At present, however, there was an important lecture about to H begin. As soon as we found that the speakers were those famed globe- trotters, John Popp, Charlie Horowski, and Joe Kielbasa, we just knew it was something that shouldn't be missed. 'They had just returned from circling the globe from east to west in a record-breaking time of twenty-four hours, and were going to start this evening to go around from north to south. In the crowd, we met Paul Kavitsky and George Harvan, who are now established printers for the Los Angeles Sun. As a side-line, George also poses for the Beautifying Soap Company. That school-girl complexion said that Allen Miller the same paper and had and Joe R dzewski, who of his certainly came in handy. The printers and Edmund Ogozalek were sports commentators on recently writ en an article about John Yediny are now successful track coaches at the niver- sity of Ca i ornia. All this news and excitement was more than we could stand. We had just about made up our minds to bumped into Lois Holmes and Mary Ritzel, who were on state fair at Los Angeles to give a dance exhibition and John Latka. They persuaded us to join them, and It was almost seven o'clock when we reached the leave, when We their way to the with John Porambo off we started. fair grounds. The midway had just been turned into a street of colored lights and gayety, and everything had assumed full swing. Above the noise of the crowd could be heard the chant of the circus barker, Joe Skellchock, as he beat out peculiar sounds on his hot bass fiddlefldnd enhanced- the charms of Fatima, alias Doris Evans, the snake-charmer from old Bagdad. Glittering swords reflected the spirit of the fair, and as the crowd gathered, Joe Geusic began swallowing blades. All this was too terrifying, so we hurried toward the air car- nival. About to ascend were John Hebda and Joe Kosalko, who were testing a new type of airplane designed by Midhael Gallanda. Business managers of the fair, Helen Gerber, Mary Sherbln, and Mary Yenca, told s+srssrsr -- 4W444ds'E si cs asf f -7' X -11 lv-n, . 1'-5 .4-! -L: , -I-.S . .Fifi Lf-Rx gif, . xx i-:ar-53, V' xv 'wifes Samoa mass Paopmzcv ' 'CContinuedD us that the initial flight of a transcontinental ship would take place at nine o'clock. We didn't want to miss the send-off, but still had plenty time to see the horse-races at the far-side of the fair. On the way over, we saw what was advertised as the UTarzan Sen- sation of the Age.n We nearly Upopped a tonsiln when we saw Florian Repik floating through the air with Marion Britton as his mate. We had no time for this and whipped on to the races. At the entrance we met head bookie, Jack Morgans. Remember how good he always was at A numbers? Having a little money to bet, he sent us to Richard Coury and Joe Colancecco, betting agents of the track. Richie is still an ' aspiring Warbler, waiting hopefully for Bing Crosby to retire before rendering his masterpiece, uSong Without Words.u At the window were Betty Zona, Anna Zrinsgy, Anna Legutki, and Anna Stevens, socialites who requentlyiattende the races. we greeted everyone, lost our money, and rushed back to the air field, arriving in time to see the air liner, piloted by William Surma and Joe Skottey, about to be boarded. ' Air hostess, Janet Houston, stood at the doorway and ushered the passengers into their proper places. Peg Whildin and Janet Stewart were the first to be seated. They were returning to their big butter- and-egg men in New York City. For the past few weeks they had been studying humanitarianism, and were about to write a thesis on ULife in the Rough.u Anna R bnikar and Anna Kostelans were going East to fill in secretarial positions. last,f u no east, comes Wilma Hughes. She stopped long enough to tell us that she was on her way. ome. Yes, we mean Lansford. After many years of hat designing, she had decided to return and settle down on West Ridge Street. We sincerely hope this letter of success of former graduates may be an inspiration to those who follow. For some of us the road of fortune has been a little roughg for others, smooth sailing. But for all, no regrets. It is our supreme desire that ten years hence, you may be able to look back on your high school days with as many pleasan memories as we hold in our hearts. As ever, M. M. Nihen and Fay Rees P.S. Ever since graduation, we have received Lans-Hi-Lites, and have watched the rapid development of the publication with interest and enthusiasm. A great deal of credit is due to the splendid cooper- ation between students and advisers. Keep up the good work! Oh, yes, the senior class history. First of all just in case you didn't know, we're really and truly seniors, noble and studious. To change the subject, one bright spring day last year we elected as president Joseph Skellchockg vice-president, Mary Dobdag secretary, Luke Scrhacicg and treasurer, Margaret Mary Nihen. See, always ahead of the rest of the world. Take a lesson from that, ye humble juniors! ,Now that that's settled, football and the senior concession stand come next. Did we make money? Some were so busy chasing hot dogs, they forgot to watch the games Cto our profitl. S'cuse me--the games. They were thrilling and marvelous under co-captains Charles Horowski and Joe Repko. Then there were those two nights when the whole high school went to the senior dances. We danced and danced and danced and danced Kdon't be silly, the record isn't brokeng I was just thinking of Joe Boyle truckingl . ,Basketball ushered in the new non-winning era. Our class was nobly represented by Charlie, Popp, and Porambo. Congratulations to the cross-country and track boys. Great runner uppers we have! Our bestest talker is none other than Paul Burkhart who capped the oratorical contest. Our class on the whole doesn't go in for arguing so we havenft any debtors--I mean debaters. Well, what's the diff? Just the matter of a small Kal and an fel. And now as this must go to press, that's all there is, there ain't no more--except we have completed a twelve year's task, nobly, and graduated! See you on the road cgi!-A l Q Q O Q O at-rea- arasr as4 e4 4 1e4ae HQSTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1939 Our class broke all previous records when we entered this school in l955, by being the largest of any class up to this time. There were freshmen all over the place, always in some room where they shouldn't be, with a blank look upon their sweet, innocent faces. They were quite a problem until they got used to the new routine, be- ing herded like a flock of sheep into the rooms where they should have gone by themselves. What was a study period about anyway? And what did one do when one got there? And in the meantime the teacher keeps hammering, nGet to work and keep quietln By the time a class meeting was held, we freshmen had wised up a little, and gally Camid a little noise--just a little, you lmowy we elected our officersg president--Raul - ' - ' -- Florence Lemckeg secretary--Jane Neal, treasurer--Orville Roberts. The following year, we were--Ahem! sophomores. This was the year of English essays upon the interesting subject of the weather, nice or nasty. We also had to learn about some old king or queen who lived, goodness only knows when, and what was the cause of some silly war in the year so and so. Oh yes, and some animals have their stomachs in one place, and others somewhere else. It doesn't make sense at all, does it? By this time, we brilliant students should have known how to use a study period. Don't you think so? But no--here's the student lounging in. He slams down his books--oh, just anywhere, of course-- slumps into his seat, lets out a yawn, and then spends the rest of the period just staring into space. The captain and crew of our ship of state that year were: president--Leonard Maholickg vice-president-- Vernon Watkinsg secretary--Ruth Weyhenmeyerg treasurer--Margaret Mary Mulhearn. Our Junior year was packed full. We were consulted about class rings and colors after an election of officers, to witg' president-- Leonard Maholickg vice-president--Margaret Mary Mulhearng secretary-- Andrew Hurnyakg treasurer--Al Ruback. In a majority vote we chose orange and black to look at next year on our banner in the auditorium. Following upon the heels of our illustrious upper-classmen, we ran a very successful dance during Thanksgiving week, netting over 3150. At Christmas time the class program was presented by Santa Claus, his better half, and company. In January three juniors, Florence Lemcke, Beth Reese, and Margaret Reese, carried off first prize in the 1 amateur contest. Juniors made the basketball team too. You bet! Three varsity members were Leonard Maholick, John Praskac, and Arthur Weyhenmeyer, The Forensic League drew many aspirants. Debate held the atten- tion of Margaret Mary Mulhearn, Harold Greenberger and Leonard Mahol- ick, while oratory also called Margaret Mulhearn to represent the school, with Evelyn Thorne drawing a close second place. Thus the juniors completed a very active and successful year. apa rt ,F r r N s P W N l ti, . 8 .,t.g4tg4 HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1940 Once upon a time there were 206 little Freshmen. fThat was way back in the fall of 1936.5 We managed somehow, despite our obvious inexperience, to come through that year without stumbling into too many pitfalls. Then, in September, 1957, what was left of our initial group ventured forth once more into the darkest wilds of Lans-Hi as... Sophomores! No sooner were we comfortably seated, than, presto! -- we were absolutely deluged with textbooks of all manner, size, and description It was such a novelty that we carried them all home that night. We've been doing it ever since. Upon reaching our present lofty status, we feel that we are en- titled to our memories Cfond and otherwise.l In fact, that's the Swoph theme song-- Thanks for the Memory. The memory, for instance, of biology-class, where WE ARE ALL ARTISTS, of algebra, and thisa equals thata but NEVER the right thing, of trying to catch up with Caesar on our Latin ponies, of Stan MorganYs Ufootball featsn, and of, let's see, what did we skip? Oh, yes, the honor rolls but the Soph- omores have nothing to do with those. ,To confess further, the Sophs entertained C?D with a Hallowe'en program in October. What with everybody scaring everybody else, both audience AND performers bore up nobly under the strain. Need we say more? One of our strong points, though, is basketball, in which several of the boys did well enough to nmakeu the varsity team. They are Frank George, Michael Dotsey, Bill Price, and Boyd Holmes. Good luck to our future Lans-Hi stars! The Sophomores sport an enviable all-around record. Mary Vane, William Richards, James Anilosky, Teddy Theodore, Elizabeth Botek, Louis Whildin, and George Dotsey were among those who represented us in band, orchestra, and forensics. Many thanks to all who have contri buted such fine extra-curricular work for the honor of the class! The outstanding success of the first exhibit of the L. H. S. Gym Team was in no small part due to the efforts of Constance Cappos, Martha Paynter, Jean Burkhart, Elizabeth Kennedy, Bill Price, Thomas Gillen and Tom Davis. Our officers, by the way, elected early in the term, are John Novak, president, Boyd Holmes, vice-president, Mary Vane, secretary, and Eleanor Olexy, treasurer. And may we herein express our gratitude for the general understanding and patience of our home room teachers, Mr. Montgomery, Miss Scarlos, Miss Redgate, and Mr. Wernert? So next year we'll be full-fledged Juniors fwe hopeb and, to misquote: By our achievements, ye shall know us . SEWPEWPWYP PW 5 sf34i'sE4eiE4'aQ4 eveDsDmDeW3ms4a4a4e4a HBTGRYCIFQLASSCNIQAI There is no class like the Freshman Class, there never was, and there never will be! We are the largest, the smartest, by far the best looking, and we claim the greatest number of potential athletes, gymnasts, actors, singers, artists, scientists, orators, debators, journalists, mathema- ticians, et oetera. Modesty alone forbids us to go any further. It was a beautiful day in September, the seventh to be exact, when the class of '41, 188 strong, barged into the building. In the first few topsy-turvy weeks, we are pretty sure that we gave our tea- cher quite a few aches and pains with our antics, remarks, and what have you. In due time, after those first weeks--which still remain vivid in our teachers' memories, I bet--we got down to the business of organi- zing our class. Out of the many candidates for the different offices, the following were chosen as best suited for their respective offices: president, Ann Harrison, vice-president, Daniel Reese, secretary, Martha Popp, treasurer, Donald Barrett. Answering the call for football men, the following reported ready to do or die for the dear old class of '4l. Francis DeMichele, Vincent DeMichele, Stanley Olsefsky, Joseph Petrovich, Nicholas Skuba, Howard Spence, Joseph Zuzu, Edward Rendish, Frank Micolucci, Leopold Ogozalek, John Orsulak, Robert Hnat, Russel Holmes, Stanley Horowski, Anthony Jasc, Paul Demitrovich, Steve Flyzik. During the absence of Edward Gazo, varsity center, it was one of the Freshman boys who was chosen to hold down that very important position which he did in the most ap- proved style. Next year, and the years following until he graduates, everyone should be on the lookout for this most promising young center, Francis DeMichele, Soon came the call for that fast thrilling sport, basketball. Frank Pavlik, George Dennis, Leopold Ogozalek, Edward Olsefsky, reported to the Jayvee team to show their stuff. Not long after the call for basketball men, came the call for prospective ora- tors. The Freshmen who answered this summons were Margaret Ann Kneiss, Mary Louise Hunsberger, Mary Imrisek, Al Sverchek, Dominic Ramejo, James Maloy, Joseph Vadyak, Donald Barrett, William Gower, Russel Holmes, Daniel Reese, Joseph Pispeky, Leonard Tomko, and Alex Maketa. Although none of them won, they got some good experience and next year will enter again Cwe hopel and win. TIME MARCHES ON...and next came the Frosh program. The most tal- ented of the Freshmen were chosen. After quite a bit of deep thinking on the part of our advisers, the following people represented the class on the stage: Bernadine Paulis, Elvira Berry, Genevieve Riordan, Mildred Snyder, Elsie Olexy, Betty Seip, Alfred Lovell, Donald Barrett, William Gower, William Mitchell, Edward Olsefsky, Marvin Mantz, Peter Stricek, Chester Rydzewski, Daniel Reese, Joseph Pispeky. All the people on the program gave their best, and we hope that the rest of the pupils had a pleasant assembly hour. erevsvrssgg5g4e4a4a4a X yi.H aan-savers.-usa . 4.s4as4as HISTGRY OF CLASS GF 1942 As September 7, 1957, dawned bright and clear, ll4 eighth grade students assembled in their respective home rooms, which had been as- signed to each individual before the beginning of the new term. The majority of the students were delighted to see so many of their friends whom they had not seen since the end of the previous term. The first day was spent mainly in getting acquainted again with the routine. True, the majority of the students were already familiar with the general routine of work. However, students from the paro- chial schools who now entered the eighth grade were unfamiliar with the course. The regular assembly period of the first Friday in the new term was spent in the election of home room officers. The home room of 8-A, under the supervision of Miss Gallagher, elected Tommy Druckenmiller as president, and Betty Galuk as vice-president. Alfred Reese was elect- ed chief executive of Miss Mulhearn's home room, 8-B. Dick Holmes was chosen vice-president. Section 8-C was under the supervision of Miss Heffelfinger. The members of the class chose George Zwiesdak as pres! ident. John Turcmanovich was elected to the vice-presidency. In the beginning of the term candidates for the Junior football teams were called for. The eighth grade boys constituted almost, if not all of the team. This organization won most of the games on their playing schedule, and attracted large crowds in their competition with other teams. The sale of tickets for the various entertainments held through- out the year also showed the eighth grade school spirit. The home rooms of our class were almost always among the first to sell or buy their quota of tickets. In many cases this quota was oversold. . The amateur program proved that the eighth grade was not going to be idle in any of the school activities. 'Many students of our class participated. Although not many of them won prizes, they did their best to entertain the audience. Jean Reese won second prize in the amateur competition. During the interval in which the judges chose the winners, Beatrice Heister, who did not enter into active competition because of her professional standing, entertained with a remarkable acrobatic dance. Finally the basketball season arrived. When the junior team was organized it consisted mainly of eighth grade students. The team man- aged to win its share of the contests in which it participated. The girls, too, were active in basketball. The eighth grade teams played well and succeeded in winning many of the games that they played. Summing up all these facts we find that the eighth grade has proved itself a most valuable asset to this high school. a rsfv sriavaal. 5 4st 4.as4as4as .., .4 , ,..4..A.......L.. , , w WbwWWPwDWUW.44Q . ni Q era V' 19m if58 HISTORY ,OF THE CLASS OF 1943 On September 7, 1957, our class, the class of 1945, began a new era in its school life. We found ourselves among new students, with new teachers, governed by new rules and in a strange building. However it didn't take the lO9 of us very long to become an active part of our high school. . After a short time, during which we became acquainted with our classmates, elections were held in the home rooms to select those of us who would lead our class for the year. This proved quite difficult. There were so many capable and eager pupils in the class. After bal- lots were counted it was found that 7A had chosen for their president, Louise Dignaziog for their vice-president, Thomas Jenkins, and for their representative on the Student Council, Edwin Humphries. 7B se- lected Clayton Miller as their president, George Jones as their vice- president, and Marion Morgan as their home room representative. William Whilden was elected to the presidency in 7C, with George Roxandich as vice-president. James Radcliffe was their representative. Evidence of the cooperative spirit of our class is shown by their willingness to root at all contests, and their ready support of any call. 7B was the first room to support the Flower Fund lOOZ. 4 One of the outstanding events of the year was the amateur program. The seventh grade gave a great deal of talent to this show. We were all happy when one of our girls, Sally DeFebbo, took third prize for her singing. Everyone of them received much applause. Altogether, we have made a very successful start in our high school career. Although we are the babies of the school in age, we have certainly proved we are no babies in ability or activity. sb be 44546416 ,L ' L 7 . Training for the grid classics began during the month of August, directed by Coach Ken Millen and his assistants, Mr. Jeffries, and Mr. Richards. After defeating St. Clair, Freeland Mining Mechanical Institute, and Minersville, and losing to Pottsville and West Hazleton, Lansford played under the arc lights at the Coaldale High School stadium with McAdoo furnishing the opposition. An ill-begun third quarter marked the Macs only touchdown. Lansford's hopes soon brightened, however, when a 65-yard punt was fumbled behind the goal line by McAdoo and was finally recovered by one of our men, making the final score 6-6. Playing in the Ginter Stadium before a large crowd, the Panthers were defeated in a thrilling gridiron classic. Both teams scored during the waning minutes of play of the initial quarter. The Ginter- men, ahowever, added another goal to their score, making the total at the final whistle 14-6. Summit Hill, by virtue of this victory cap- tured the Panther Valley football title. The following Friday, the Panthermen were again engaged in a night battle. This time Tamaqua furnished the opposition at their own stadium. Each team rammed the strong lines but to no avail, for the first half ended with a O-O score. The Millenmen really turned the power on in the last quarter as a pass was completed which took the pigskin over the goal line, making the final score 7-O. Again playing before a large crowd in the local stadium, our boys entertained Nesquehoning in the Annual Armistice Day grid tilt. This seemed to be one of the stiffest battles of the entire campaign. In the second period the Panthers' cooperating efforts managed to register a touchdown and an extra point. The Nesquers came back fighting hard, thus being rewarded, with a touchdown, but they failed miserably in recording that tieing extra point. At the closing whistle another thrilling victory was chalked up to the Millenmen 7-6. On November 20, Lansford visited Mt. Carmel. In spite of the unfavorable weather conditions, the Red and White squad defeated their opponents in an easily fought contest, the final score being 21-7. On Thanksgiving Day, the Panthermen rang down the curtain on their l937 football campaign with a tough loss to Coaldale's Tigers. In possession of a sack stuffed with bad breaks, the Red and White squad displayed a brand of football suggestive of a victorious team. Although the Tigers held a slight lead throughout most of the contest, the Millenmen succeeded in ringing up 16 first-downs to 9 of their opponents. The score was 15-6. The members of the varsity squad who will graduate in June, and whose services will be missed this coming season, are: Joe Repko, Charles Horowski, Florian Repik, John Popp, John Porambo, Gennero DeMichele, George Harvan, Joe Hlubik, Nathan Zimmerman, and J. In an early season competition, Lancaster High, captained by the great colored flash, Barney Ewell, barely nosed-out Lansford for high honors at the Mt. Carmel Invitation meet. Then the team was rounded into shape and the winning of a dual , rival, gave the boys the spirit to compete in the District Eleven P. I. A. A. Track and Field meet. Although considered only an outside choice, Coach Millen's boys crashed through with a great win to be crowned District Eleven P. I. A. A. champions for the second time in four years, a record which is not held by any other school of Lansford's student enrollment. Not satisfied with this splendid achievement, the team went on through to win the Carbon County track championship for the sixth successive time. The first call for candidates for the campaign of the Lansford High School cross-country team, coached by Professor Jack L. Mont- gomery, former United States Olympic miler, was issued on September 15 Fourteen aspirants responded: three seniors, Joseph Kielbasa, Harry Miller, and Paul Imrisekg seven juniors, William Dascalakis, Steve Petras, and Michael Vitekg seven sophomores, Michael Zwiesdak, Joseph Kobetich, and John Ogozalek, Boyd Holmes, Michael Kostelansky, Joseph and Jnhn Kociang one freshman, Stanley Mikulski. John Stanko was appointed manager. Around these harriers, the local club entered the second season of the Central Pennsylvania Scholastic Cross-Country League. The first encounter was with Mount Carmel. Mount Carmel seemed to be an easy victim to the Montgomerymen, as the meet ended with the score Mount Carmel 55--Lansford 22. Friday, October 15, the Red and White team captured its second victory of the campaign at Pottsville. The first three consecutive places were held by Lansford sprinters: Michael Zwiesdak first, Joseph Kobetich second, and Michael Vitek third. The final score was Lans ford l85-- Pottsville 565. The following week the team was eliminated from a four-way tie for first position in the Central Pennsylvania Cross-Country League, as John Harris defeated our boys by a slim margin of 27-28. Michael Zwiesdak finished first for the Montgomerymen. His time was 12 minutes, 15 seconds. Lansford then struck a winning stride, as they defeated Reading in a close meet. For the Montgomerymen, Michael UZippoV Zwiesdak came in a close second, while fourth, fifth, and sixth honors were taken by Joe Olexy, Joseph Kielbasa, and Joseph Kobetich respectively. On the morning of Armistice Day, our runners, competing with five other Central Pennsylvania teams, finished in fourth place position in a meet held at Pottsville, which climaxed the l937 cross-country cam- paign. First place honors for the meet went to Reading, with John Harris second, Birdsboro third, Lansford fourth, Mt. Carmel fifth, and Pottsville sixth. Joe nKobyH Kobetich ended up as ninth for the Lansfordians, while Michael nZippon Zwiesdak was sixteenth. Mr. Montgomery and his harriers are to be congratulated on their very successful season. 5 P as P J- P Fc Pb Q 4Q4Q4Q .... ..,. ...........,.,.....-,. .,,...,..A,..,, A..- . .-,.,.,,.n.. ....-.,m... - - .. .-, - L, .,.,,, ,, ! --ci T 8 fa4as4 4s Qa THE STUDENT COUNCIL. One of the most important organizations in the Lansford High School is the Student Council. It consists of representatives from each home room, including the seventh and eighth grades. It has been the duty of the council to carry out all the activi- ties of the high school concerning the fields of knowledge, athletics, and amusements, such as selecting cheerleaders, boosting games, pro- moting ticket sales, and operating the annual amateur contest and the athletic association ball. During the years 1957-1958, an electric Victrola was purchased by the council for the benefit of the students. Clubs rented it for their parties and dances, the money received being used to pay for new records and repairs. We leave the student council this year, hoping that the ones to come will carry on the work as well as the present members have done. With such cooperation, we know the spirit of Lans-Hi will burn on forever. s wbssbss P FW S laai 4 4646 LAL Am, ,,,. ,A .,,.,,A,....t ' Y. 1-U-.W Y V E05 N3 S SO Y' S. From that time on everyone put forth his best efforts in order to secure a good firm background. This year's topic for de- bate--Resolved: That the Several States Should Adopt a Unicameral System of Legislation--proved very interesting. - In February the teams that were to represent the high school were chosen. Those selected were Florence Bloom, Harold Greenberger, and Leonard Maholick of the affirmativeg Fannette Brill, Margaret Mary Mulhearn, and William Richards of the negative. The other members of the club are Russell Wapensky, William Dascalakis, and Sylvester Harkowitz. V Early in March the negative team engaged in a debate with Tamaqua. Several days later the Tamaqua negative came to Lansford. Both of these were non-decision debates. On March 18, the two teams participated in the tournament held at the Allentown Preparatory School. Each team debated five times and although they were not in the finals, they gained much valuable experience. The Carbon County contest was held on March 22 and 23. The Lansford affirmative debated Palmerton negative, while the Lansford negative opposed Lehighton affirmative. Attorney O. J. Tallman judged the debates again this year. Lansford was quite successful in this contest, placing second, with Palmerton receiving the top honors. Each debater was awarded a silver medal for his individual efforts. The debate coaches were Miss Wynn and Mr. Melroy. ORATORY The annual boys' and girls' oratorical contest was held on Febru- ary 12, this year. The oration for the boys was Lincoln's nGettysburg Address,n and the girls spoke about the life of Lincoln. v The girls who participated in the contest were Marion Britton, Mary Dobda, Julia Dotsey, Mary Louise Honsberger, Mary Imrisek, Marie Kalny, Margaret Kneiss, Margaret M. The splendid impression it makes has been attained only through long, hard training and good leadership. The band was organized in February, 1951, with the support of the Lansford Rotary Club. At that time Professor Victor Oswald of Hazleton was the director. He had the task of interesting the stud- ents and persuading them to join the new organization. He accom- plished this very successfully. 'P P Since the time of the organization the band has had as directors Professor Frank Fisher and Professor Thomas Dorsey. Under the expert guidance of Professor Dorsey, a fine musician himself, the band has acquired a fine reputation in this vicinity. Among its many public appearances was a broadcast from station WJZ in New York City. In the spring of every year the band gives a concert. ln prep- aration for this yearly event every member puts forth his best. It is long, hard work. Every week a practice is held requiring two or three hours of continuous playing. A These many hours are not in vain. Several of the boys who learned to play an instrument have obtained good jobs. Present meme bers of the band have something to look forward to. lf not a job, the pleasure of being able to play pays back with interest the time spent in learning to play. I ' The Lansford High School band is superior to the average high school band. The marches and other pieces played are those that are played by professional bands, and with the fine marching the band has done lately, our band is above the ordinary. .. . 4Q4fQ sQ . , Q 5 ri- xx ,J iw w 3 A , s x -Q- fgeaf-ur my A --.4 4 , f 9' ,Sa f ' ,Mm . , 1 g K. . .ig .X A hu-my-gn ...uu- 4533 fix -0 nb Q ,lf Q-2 .,............. 1 BAND SCHOGL GH H LANSFORD A GHOjSNVW HQIH OHDS WO HO VHLSHHO X I Lgdlk, , - ., , Y A+ K ,W --rf-wm-W s T . 4164 4 'Q4ai 15's-:fzs oracafsrm The Lansford High School Orchestra was organized in 1950 by Miss Prudence E. It is a group of fourteen boys chosen from the junior and senior classes. It is well organized, having a captain and two lieutenants whose duty it is to see that orders are carried out and laws obeyed by those under them. The equipment consists of blue and red hoods which are very suit- able for patrolling on the different corners on cold, blustery days. The heavy hoods are discarded and white belts with silver badges are donned when warmer weather comes. The belts cross the chest diagonally and give a very miligary appearance. Bright yellow rain capes and caps are provided for wet'weather. Blue and red flags on long poles are used to stop hurrying crowds in danger zones at dismissal time when traffic is heavy. A patrol room is situated on the third floor containing individual lockers with combination locks for the disposal of clothes and books. Before each session and at dismissal time the block in front of the school on Bertsch Street is chained off for a few minutes to let the students play and walk about without having to guard against im- peding traffic. When the doors are opened, pupils form single lines before they are admitted into the school. The patrol boys report disorderly persons to the principal's office. They also prevent snowballing and loitering on private properties about the school. V During assembly, the boys are stationed at the many different exits, and during fire drills lead the students out of the school and keep them in separate groups outside. Special privileges are granted, such as being excused for coming in late to class when on duty, and being excused from class to go on duty. Near the end of the school term the patrol is tendered a banquet. The place for this occasion is decided by the boys themselves and a happy time is anticipated by all. The patrol has done splendid work this year. No accidents have been reported and a more orderly student body has been observed by the citizens of this town. X www if A , GOWER DONALD BARRETT viii Qfebgsbwfs-DEQ-rider rail-Q54fQ4'4Q 1fg 1 8 THE DORSEY BROTHERS Jimmy and Tommy are brothers fine. Although they both worked in a mine, They paraded the streets with their daddy's band, And truly thought this simply grand. A master of music was he so great, He told the boys they shouldn't wait, But save their money to buy a horn, And practise each day at early morn. Upon the saxophone Jimmy would play, And often tried to swing and sway, While Tommy on his trombone so shining and new, Some notes would miss, but only a few. They practised the scale three hours a day, And soon good music they could play, They formed a band and played for a dance, And toward the top they did advance. After two years of great success, The people were really forced to confess, The Dorsey Brothers were now the best, And behind their names great fame would rest. The boys packed their trunks and left the town, They left their friends with many a frown. . The people hated to see them leave, But in New York, they could more achieve. They played with Whiteman's famous band, And traveled over the entire land, The name of Dorsey was praised so high, That many a spotlight did they occupy. Jimmy's band set out for the west, And of many a star he was the guest, While Tommy stayed in New York City, Where he popularized many a well-known ditty. Today we find them topping the list, For no players like them do now exist, Tommy is noted for that thing called swing, And in that class also is Jimmy a king. And when the boys sit and dream, How short the time doth really seem, Since they in Lansford were just boys, Disturbing their neighbors with frightful noise.
