Along with Lansdowne's academic achievements come high standards in its athletic programs. I have tried to identify all of the teams that have excelled in their specific areas over the years. Football, at one time, was our most popular sport. Teams at Lansdowne have won championships in 1918, 1920, 1928, 1929, 1934, 1954, 1965, 1966, 1967 and in 1972. The Lansdowne Boys' Club gave boys an interest in soccer, and in 1932 the first soccer team was formed at Lansdowne High. The team did not do well, and in 1938 the school board disbanded it. In 1973 there was, again, an interest in soccer. A soccer club was formed which played exhibition matches. The club became a competing team in 1976. They won the league championship in 1977 and 1980. There was once a golf team at Lansdowne High. They played at the Lansdowne Country Club, which was on Marshall Road where the playground and tennis courts are located now. The boys basketball team has won its share of championships: in 1928, 1929, 1930, 1935 and in 1955. Cross Country is a relatively new sport at L-A, and has not yet won a championship. The track team, on the other hand, won championships in 1959, 1960, 1964 and 1969. The Delco Meet was held for years on Stewart Field, but because of its size, the site was changed to a school with a larger track and field. Lansdowne High has produced many outstanding tennis players. The team won championships in 1929, 1931 and 1932. Wrestling has also had many individual champs, plus it won championship honors in 1966, 1967, 1970, 1972 and in 1973. The first girls' interscholastic sport was hockey. The team was formed in 1920. They have gone on to win two titles, the first in 1955, the second in 1961. In the 1920's, Lansdowne had a girls' track team, but it only lasted a few years. Recently girls have again been competing in track, as members of the boys' team. Softball in the '50's and '60's gave the girls a spring sport. In 1961 and 1962 they became champions, but the team was disbanded. Lacrosse has recently become very successful. They won championships in 1979 and 1980. When counting the number of girls' championships, the basketball team has easily won the most. They were champs in 1923, 1936, 1939, 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1974. 26
