What is great is to see some Christians practicing their Christianity: walkin' into Contact, workin' for peace, showin' a little Love. It's really great when Student Council works up a liberal Dress Code — and we get it. It's fabulous when Blacks and Whites play hard on the same basketball team. It's sick when a guy mouths off a racial slur. It's sick when we get taught from the same premises — and no one questions them. LA is a small, tight community. This community-feeling is OK — the conformity it breeds is bad. So listen: a lot of things are right with LA. Keep them. But when a teacher hands some bull — refuse it. Make the school meaningful — some have. The hippies who merely disdain all aspects of a school are as bad as the Straights who accept them all. Work for change. The Revolution is when, where, and how you work for it. SIONS Do You Remember in seventh grade: Desert boots, crew shirts. Levis. The Beatles. Open Houses, fairy loops, paisley. Jerry Blavat. Yon fox, pierced ears, daisies in ninth grade: Initial pins, crew neck sweaters. Stompers, Gym Club. A white Christmas, flowers on pigtails, Lansdowne movies. Summer Blonde. in tenth grade: Kilts, loafers with fringe and a buckle. Young Life. Motown Sounds, boys' basketball. Sophomore Flop. Beastiality confined to the arena. the Doves vs. the Hawks in eleventh grade: “I got my license! , college boards, culottes, wide collars. “A scarlet letter is written on red stationery . Romeo and Juliet. Do you folia? . Love is Blue. Grub Day, SASS-ln, the Shore in our Senior year: Last summer, love beads, vests, maxicoats, pants on girls, jeans and beards on boys. Just what does this school mean to us? Through its hallowed halls we have walked for six long, painful years. In its creaking classrooms we have received our education. We have learned to love the people who frequent this place, Or at least to give them a fair chance. What happened while we were here pushed our minds onward to learn: Johnson's Great Society .. Watts New York blackout Hydrogen bombs lost off Spain Surveyor landed on the Moon Walt Disney died The Six Day War in Palestine Race riots Heart transplants Martin Luther King assassinated Poor People's Campaign Robert Kennedy shot Democratic Convention and police battle Pueblo Biafra Air pollution Chicago Conspiracy trials Oil slicks ... Hair on Broadway . Spiro T. Agnew Nixon's Silent Majority And through it all, a vicious war was waged against mankind in Vietnam. We learned from these things. We mustn't stop here. We must go on. and learn from the future As we have from the past. IMPRES LA isn't all bad — it isn't all good. The Straights who worship it are as wrong as the Freaks who constantly down it. Many different types come to LA. We have Blacks and Whites and scholars and jocks and hippies and Establishment guys and lazy dudes and workin' dudes. Still, there is an imbalance. Most of the kids are white, middle-class. and conservative. Many of us are scorned for our views. The Blacks tell us that racism and prejudice exist. There have been some changes this year. Student Power has some meaning. Kids are doing some things. It is really groovy to see the football manager's clipboard at a game with its Moratorium sticker. It's groovier still to see a Beard walking next to a bare-headed wrestler. 2
