It X ,k i' 'A' if i' THE WAR IS The news relays, communiques are peaceful in these peace- ful daysg The war is really over and the war is really won. The starry flag could never lag. could never rest. could never drag A moment 'till the great decisive war was really done. To mend, to save, to work. to slave until the home front job they gave Was done, was just a hearty tribute to the hoys away, Who won the peace. made war to cease. and gave our weary hearts release, And brought the happy days which are the glorious today. And even yet, if we forget, the coming ages may regret We won the war in '45 and couldn't see it through. For if we stay and loaf today, some other folks will have to pay Not half so much for what we did as what we didnit do. For we will someday make or hreak our landg Will leave a thousand cities touching sky, Ur else a hlackened wilderness of sand. A nohle challenge for a noble day. FOR THE DEFENSE 0F This January, after four and a half years of Navy life. we enthusiastically welcomed back our old friend. Dr. S. N. Ewan. Jr. l'lis face was familiar to everyone, for although dressed in a commanderis uniform he still had been able to take time from Naval operations to attend some school activities. His cheerful and friendly smile has a way of put- ting one at ease, and under his superior leadership we will strive for more cooperation and unity. Du. CARMON Ross The departure of Dr. Carmon Ross. as acting superintendent. was noted with regret, for Dr. Ross did outstanding work in guiding us through four years of war. ln addition, as organizer and first president of our Allied Youth Council, he brought the community and school still closer together. Dr. E. Carlton Abbott, our principal. worked faithfully under trying war conditions to keep our school at its pre-war standard. With such extra Du. E. CARLTUN ABBOTT ,FN 'Hs ,ze-R x. TEACHERS OF THE 0113 FB D0 5 Accessible. cooperative. and up-to-date. thc mem- bers of the faculty solve any problem with equa- nimity. Although they are confronted with many difiicult situations. their humor remains intact and they give genuine understanding. Mr. Coronway in civics and ancient history. Mr. Snyder in modern and American history. Mr. Drake in American history. and Mr. Grillin in Wiorld Affairs-all help us to learn more about the world of yesterday and today. In teaching us to under- stand other nations. they are builders of unity among all. Languages also further our understanding of others. Miss Cook strives to build a foundation for all languages through Lating Miss Hoopes gives us the language of the 'gHague.', Frenchg Miss Loan and Miss Perkins lend the 'South American atmosphere by way of Spanish. The English language is. of course. the one all should be interested in mastering. Miss Perkins. Mrs. Lisk and Mr. Cershman give the freshmen their initial start in units and help them delve into grammar and composition. Miss Hartman goes still deeper into these rules of writing and heads Scrib- bleris lnk and freshman guide. The Handbook. Mrs. Christ, director of dramatics. and Mrs. Lisk are junior teachers of American Literatureg and Miss McCullough presents English Literature to the seniors. However, in January, Mr. Atkiss returned from the service to replace Mrs. Lisk. whom we were sorry to see leave. His welcome was short-lived though as he resigned in February to take up lndus- trial Relations Work. Fortunately. we secured Mr. Laubach who too had just returned from the service. Wie wish him the success his forerunners had. Mr. Freeman and Miss Adams give the freshmen their start in algebra. while Mrs. Morris carries on with the angles of Plane Geometry for the sopho- mores. Mr. Freeman then takes over to turn out the Finished Product in advanced algebra, solid geometry. and trigonometry. B Winn-H QRII-'FIN EDNYIN Syvum A. Toon Comwwwv llowmzn R. Selunidt win first prize at The .lunior Class. with the valuable assistance of Mr. Drake. got off to a lvig start last Fall on their third lap toward their final goal of graduation. Their first outstanding success was the junior- Freslnnan party. which under the leadership of llretnell Williams. helped to hind the two classes closer together. The niine of ability' in the Junior Class was shown hy the fact that it was represented in every activity' either in or out of class: sports. social affairs. and government. Nine junior lvoys were on the varsity' foothall team: Pete Purse. Bruce McCain. and Holm Jlllll II Junior officers R. Cortner. J. Murphy. l.. Nlertz. X. Sec discuss happenings of the day. Covey' on the varsity' hasketlvall team. the trio from Aidan: Mickey' Greenwood. Bill and Joe lVlcClaren and liretnell Williams and Bill Valentine: and eight boys on the wrestling teani that won a championship lor Lansdowne. Margie Klagens was the only' junior girl to receive a varsity letter for hockey. while vivacious Jane Murphy. vice-president of the junior class receiy ed one each for her splendid cheer lead- ing and lvasketball. Fifteen junior varsity' letters were awarded in hockey. hasketball. and cheer leading. Lois Deiss received one in each ofthe three sports. Louise Hertz. competent secretary' of the junior class found time to lie a leader of Lansdowneis social activities. and was recently' the co-chairman of a successful clothing drive. Many' junior girls were active as organizers of the Hi-Y sponsored clulms for freshmen and sophomore girls. The juniors put a great deal of work into the preparation for their l'roni. the biggest event of the season for some. The Civic Forum League discussions at 'lieinple liniversity and the panel discussion at our school and others in the county provided our juniors with knowledge of modern prohleins and study' of gov- ernment. while their excellent officers put that ex- perience in every day life. 'l'he main ohjectixe has hecn to teach the students the basic principles of chemistry and physics so they may better understand this strange world of ours. Mr. McClure deserves much credit for his reorganization of the lahoratory. Because of this the students have lveen able to accomplish much more in getting an understanding of chemistry and physics. Also. this year. the students have prepared research papers. There is no douht that Lansdowne will turn out some future chemist or physicist. Biology has valuable proof to offer that we are all brothers. By studying this subject the students learn that hasically we are all the same. Time is spent on Xlenrlels laws of heredity so the students may better understand the human race. Besides the study of man. flowers. and insects. the most out- standing part of the course is the dissecting of frogs and worms. This might seem useless to some. lxut P Thomas. tl. llreenau. J. Frommcr. J. Hard. B. llill, li. ac . MATH ON THE ANTI-WAR PATH it is not. for it gives the pupils an understanding of all phases of life about them. It might seem that General Science isnit very use- ful when it comes to this scientific world of ours. hut this is not true. Although General Science isn't as important as chemistry. it does give the pupil an understanding of the elementary process of sci- ence. 'lihe students do not go into an extensiyc stumly. hut they do have experiments and discussions which aid them in understanding something of the way of science. All this Lansdowne is conscious of and thus is trying to prepare their students. A most important science in our world today is mathematics. We know that very little in the past war could have been accomplished if it had not been for our knowledge of mathematics. Math will play just as big a part in the future as it has played in the past: in faet. mathematics will take the lead in helping in modern research work. The main objective in our math courses is to teach the pupils to he accurate. to he ahle to solx e all sorts of daily problems that require calculating. and to build up strong reasoning power. liven if students forget some of their math. they can never forget the good habits math can teach them il they are willing to learn. No one can he a mere day dreamer or a careless person and get math. for oneis mind must he kept on the subject if he wishes to master mathematics. Our mathematics department offers algebra. plane and solid geometry. advanced algebra and trigo- nometry. of great value to those students who expect to take up any of the many engineering courses or other vocations requiring a thorough foundation of math. Required research papers in a variety of mathematical fields are also valuable. We hope to prepare students for the coming of a new era in which math is sure to play a big part. lx Xlr. lfischer Joints out a funtlainental of algebra tv us frcshm J 1 F C Pngle. B. llriest, ll. Of, sponsored by Temple Lniversity. There students from many Philadelphia and suburban schools have learned to work together. Likewise. juniors have not neglected current events. for one day a week has been spent reading the American Observerfi which helps the students to know what is happening in the world outside of Lansdowne. Discussions and oral reports add a great deal to the subject. Little outside activity has been done in the Mod- ern and Ancient History classes. but a great deal of comparing of the past with the present and future has taken place. One of the easiest ways to learn is to study' the experiences and mistakes of the past. If America hopes to retain her peace. then she must profit by the mistakes of others. L. H. S. students are becoming conscious of the need for an everlasting peace. The Ancient History classes have been making a study of Penna. History which is a new subject required by the state. Through studying local history. students will develop an ap- preciation of historical landmarks. Likewise. the Modern History classes are no slackers when it comes to current events. for they have spent much ol their time considering the happenings of the day. Lansdowne's Social Studies department has done marvelous work in teaching the students how to be good Americans and good neighbors to all. If these studies have done nothing but teach the pupils to he observing. they will have accomplished a great deal. but besides that. they have taught the students of L.H.S. the necessity for a lasting world peace for all people. of all races. H. has attempted to give its pupils a variety of useful courses. Everything from navigation to mechanical drawing is taught under the supervision of Mr. Tannneryn and Mr. Wenzel. Mostly boys take the courses, but there are a few girls in them, too. The navigation course gives the students a knowl- edge of air and sea navigation. The pupils need some math for they lnust use different mathematical tools. An understanding of the use of charts. com- pass, and sextant is acquired. This course has helped some of the boys who have gone in the service since it gave them an under- standing of navigation which was very valuable. Another course is mechanical drawing. All stu- dents twhether freshman or seniorl have an op- portunity to take this course. In the first year, the pupil has elementary drawing, but in later years he learns to design machines. Fields such as sheet FIIHN lp Examining tripod are surveyors J. l.a- Rosa. P. Ough, F. Schroeder, S. Patrick. metal development, intersections. and isometric projections are covered. Besides the other courses, the study of industrial arts is taken up. The main object is to teach the pupils the fundamental skills, tool techniques, and good habits in order to use the tools wisely. ln Lansdowne, there are four year courses in industrial arts. Each course has a different aim in mind. Seniors who have taken four years of industrial arts are expected to take care of and have an interest in the shop. Much time and effort have been spent in order to make Lansdowne's industrial arts department a worth-while project. Because of these efforts our school has been able to turn out boys who are well equipped in these fields. After the students leave high school, they will be able to take with them a useful trade which will be helpful in the coming years. Blue Print Reading: J. LaRosa, S Patrick, D. Here the girls can get valuable instruction which will be very useful to them later on. The girls in the sewing classes make many diHer- ent things such as: blouses. pajamas. skirts, evening dresses, bathing suits, dresses, and aprons. They are taught to make these things quickly and ex- pertly. They learn about clothes designing. The girls also learn about the characteristics of different materials and what materials are the best to buy. They know what is fashionable and what isnit. Mrs. Stephens always keeps a good supply of the latest fashion magazines on hand. Many of these girls will becomes our future dress designers. That certainly smells delicious, says one girl as she passes Miss Stevens' cooking room. The class is probably hard at work making some cakes or muffins for some school function. The cooking classes prove their value when it comes time for the Home and School Dinner. or the Honors Ban- quet, or any other social event which the school . . HEALTHY HOME might be having. They are always on the job fixing the food, or serving. or decorating the tables. When the girls aren't busy helping with some school project, they make different dishes and then they are allowed to eat whatever they make. Ice cream. Spanish cream, spaghetti. French fried potatoes. apple pie. and date sticks-these are some of the delightful dishes that the girls make. The fellows have a cooking class their very own. They also make different dishes which are just as good as what the girls cook. Donit let anyone tell you that fellows don't make good cooks. The fellows even had a breakfast at one time this year. It was really delicious, too. No matter what these people do after they are out of high school. cooking and sewing will always be of value to them. These courses have taught them important everyday things. things which they will be grateful to know. After all. every girl wants pretty clothes. Wlhat good would an executive or a policy decision be without a stenographer to transmit the orders and policies? Our instructors know that the national emergency is over and the period of reconversion has begun, but the opportunities for clerical workers is still tremendous. The Commercial Department of Lansdowne High has been doing a lot in helping to preserve the peace now that it has been won by giving the students the finest business education possible. Mr. Kraber. Mr. Kramer. and Miss Adams are always lending a helping hand. and as teachers of their various subjects realize their importance. A stenographer alone, or even a typist. can easily find a position at a good salary. Thus our commercial students receive a great deal of practical experience by acting as secretaries for various teachers and for the many organizations of the school. Likewise. they are constantly called upon to prepare all sorts of mimeographed material for use in classes. as well as for the omce and many student activities. Each year. an outstanding stu- dent of the commercial course acts as assistant in the ofiice to the high school secretary. This year the work has been most efficiently done by a senior. S ' BT CLASSES The freshmen classes this year have been getting a solid foundation for their art training. Everyone must have the fundamentals of design and lettering, and our promising young freshmen have turned out some lovely originals. The sophomores are a little more advanced with action figures. They have a lot of fun with just a drawing pencil and a free hand. After these life drawings are perfected, costume designing is under- taken. First, designs for oneself, then a dress for a showgirl, and finally costumes from famous plays. This work applies mainly to the girls, while the boys spend time on cartoons. The work of the juniors and seniors differs only in the interior decorating in which the juniors take great pride. They thoroughly enjoy planning their homes of the future and in finding furniture and draperies to complete a peaceful dream. The seniors for the first time in many years have undertaken an extensive study of oil painting. This is wnew-medium-for manyaof--them. Their firstaeom- positions were mostly flower stills, but after Christ- mas, landscapes were attempted which gave a wider J. Donch illustrates her technique to two oth: r artist range of scenes and color. At the beginning of the year, beautifully hand-painted scarves of all sizes and colors were seen hanging from the ceiling and walls of the art room. Even now a familiar question which one may hear in the halls is, That,s a lovely scarf. Did you paint it? Not only do our students spend much time in the art room, but many of them also attend Saturday morning classes at the School of Industrial Arts in Philadelphia. They feel that the- more artvtraini-ngfthsy obtain -in an interesting field the more skillfully will they be able to face the world of tomorrow. 63 J. Hattersly, D. Worthy. B. Miller, E. Dun lap, J.
